anybody know if the cicadas are going to affect flyfishing at all?

i.e. :

do trout eat'em?
i'm guessing yes, like any other terrestrial.

any tiers out there gonna try to make some patterns ?
i was thinking of a modified foam beetle.

I'm not sure. I bet the bass eat 'em up though. I wonder if there are any top water crank baits that look like them?

YOU can eat them - there are plenty of sites that have recipies now. No thanks, I'll leave them to the fish.

Yes and Yes.

The hatch will be big and the trout will gorge themselves.

"hey nigal, didn't you say you were gonna start flyfishing ?"

Yeah. I had some birthday cash and it came down to the fly rod or a gps. I figured I use the gps more so I went with that. Now every time I go fishing I think, "Dang! Should have went with the rod.". LOL!

ya, but i guess if you got a rod, then you'd get lost trying to get to the stream without the gps.

sacco,

this should give you an idea.

There is a guy at work who ties them and I just buy them.

I don't have the time to deal with it every day like he does.

"Crank bait"

"fly fishing"

Is this code for something?

Trout like to eat things they're used to. Cicadas might make them nervous- I think out here, the Westslope Cutthroat might not know what the heck it was. But, early in the season if they're really hungray, they might attack anything.

I predict the trout get used to them in about 15 minutes after they start dropping in the water, lol.

what chili said.

plus, there are some cicadas every year, just not nearly as many.

My guess is that once the trout get into a feeding frenzy, they aren't going to really care what they are eating.

with bass, yes.

with trout, sometimes.

many times when trout are in a real frenzy they get VERY specific.

it's been proven that sometimes trout'll only go after a certain sex of hatching flies - even though it take an entemologist and a microscope to tell the males from the females!

In our paper yesterday there was an article about this and they stated that the trout will be feeding on them. If I see active feeding on cicadas on the creeks I fish, I will be tying some cicada patterns to match it, especially if I get refusals on the flies I'm used to fishing with.

Man the lake where I have my summer home (RV) was swarming with spawning bass this passed weekend. I saw some BIG ones. No matter how much you cast to them they would not hit. Some people were just jigging and harrassing them into defending their nests but I find that unsporting and hurtful. As soon as they are done I'm hoping they'll be good and hungry!

Brownies will likely go for cicadas before rainbows because browns love just about anything on the surface!! I think the bows will still go for em though. Theres a thread or 2 about cicadas on www.riversmallies.com I saw some pics on there of cicada patterns that should be easy to copy.Im going to make some popper cicadas and see what happens.
