Uber-HikingView MessagesThe Uberness “Two friends of mine and I last summer took a bet from some members of our Scout troop that we couldn't complete the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail in two days. We won the bet two weeks later and developed a passion which we call "Uber-Hiking" and thus naming ourselves the "Uber-Hikers". I'd like to share stories of individuals with similar exploits.” 9:30:41 PM 5/18/04 “Walkingdude's done some of that. Let me guess, you hide in the woods and your friends hunt for RedOctober? Either that or their are maples where you live.” 6:57:57 AM 5/19/04 Ooby Dooby “Where and how long is the Laurel Highlands Trail?” 7:19:17 AM 5/19/04 “There's a whole industry about that. It's called trail running.” 8:25:42 AM 5/19/04 “back in 67 when i was a young buck, i did the AT in 1 1/2 months.” 12:13:52 PM 5/19/04 “i did the pct in 72 in just under 2 months would've finished sooner but i broke my leg halfway along the trip.” 12:41:23 PM 5/19/04 “I heard it's real hard to carry a pack and and hop on one leg like that.” 12:43:34 PM 5/19/04 “"i did the pct in 72 in just under 2 months would've finished sooner but i broke my leg halfway along the trip." sacco 12:41:23 PM Heck sacco, I broke my leg halfway along my thruhike, but I just gnawed it the rest of the way off and continued with a wooden leg I carved from a downed branch.” 12:52:43 PM 5/19/04 “no hopping. i just ambushed an elk. killed him with my pocket knife. then i ground up his antlers for a special poultice. i was good as new in a week.” 12:56:30 PM 5/19/04 “Heck sacco, I broke my leg halfway along my thruhike, but I just gnawed it the rest of the way off and continued with a wooden leg I carved from a downed branch." StoveStomper 12:52:43 PM would've gone that route, but then it'd prolly take me a few months to grow back another leg.” 12:58:09 PM 5/19/04 “sacco, you should have grafted the elk's hindquarters to your body, that way you'd have finished a lot earlier, and you'd look like a centaur, which always brings in the chicks.” 12:58:24 PM 5/19/04 “Only needed to replace one leg, bit.” 1:00:58 PM 5/19/04 “sacco, you should have grafted the elk's hindquarters to your body, that way you'd have finished a lot earlier, and you'd look like a centaur, which always brings in the chicks." bitpusher 12:58:24 PM thought of that too, but it was in july, and as you're probably aware, you shouldn't do any grafting between fathers day and laborday - 'cept for chimeras of course, but that's a totally different story.” 1:05:07 PM 5/19/04 “Sort of like the white shoes after labor day thing.” 1:06:56 PM 5/19/04 “What is an uber?” 1:07:44 PM 5/19/04 “You're dead, you don't need to know.” 1:10:18 PM 5/19/04 “SS exactly. you know what i'm talking about.” 1:15:07 PM 5/19/04 “One MUST maintain standards.” 1:16:12 PM 5/19/04 What is Uber? “Well, Uber isn't a thing, but an adjective, a German one actually meaning "over". It has become used commonly meaning something that is excessively difficult. As my mother puts it "More courage than brains." To answer another question, he Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is 70 miles over some fairly rough terrain. It's an awesome trail and I recommend it to anyone who loves Central Pennsylvanian scenery.” 2:43:45 PM 5/19/04 Danged Kids! “Ya gots ta slow down and smell the flowers! Danged Kids!!!” 2:45:46 PM 5/19/04 “I thought Uber meant "Super", like Laetitia Casta... Uber Model!” 2:46:53 PM 5/19/04 “RedOctober, that must be jeff ... aka. uber goober.” 7:14:17 PM 5/19/04 “RedOctober, that must be jeff ... aka. uber goober.” 7:14:18 PM 5/19/04 “I'm one of the Uber Hikers that does these things with Red October. We do stop to smell the flowers and take in the scenery...it's called stopping to poo.” 8:56:31 PM 5/19/04 “back in 75' when i was a young buck and my colon was in much better shape, i went 6 months without pooing. yup, people thought i was really fat, but it was just a bunch of poo.” 8:03:03 AM 5/20/04 “Sacco's full of #&%!$.” 9:27:07 AM 5/20/04 “at least he freely admits it...unlike some other people on her they know who they are...” 9:52:27 AM 5/20/04 “nah, i used to be full of #&%!$. that was back in 75. now i wear depends. in my old age i've learned that it's better to just let your #&%!$ out. don't hold it up inside. just start spewing #&%!$ whenever you feel the need. thats that way i live my life. i know i've found a new home here at TT, because lots of other folks around here have the same philosophy. only they need to learn to buy some depends to catch some of it, too. OOPS I CRAPPED MY PANTS CAN HOLD ALOT OF DUNG !!! [snl commercial]” 10:26:03 AM 5/20/04 “Instead of just crapping yourself, might I suggest an innovative alternative? Tired of carrying around that old camelback(or platypus if you perfer), turn it into a colostomy(sp?) bag! Just hang it off to the side of your pack and just empty it when you find a convenient hole in the ground!” 12:46:47 PM 5/20/04 “This kid might be alright.” 12:49:52 PM 5/20/04 “eeewwww. thats gross.” 12:51:13 PM 5/20/04 “gross... no way. where do you think all those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches go??” 8:43:57 PM 5/20/04 Maintaining the Uberness “I'm anticipating a hike of 30 miles per day for a period of 6 days. Any suggestions on how to get around fatigue and pains that will accumulate?” 11:14:59 PM 5/20/04 “beer as a muscle relaxant and ibuprofen as an anti inflammatory has worked for me. If you can find a hot spring.....” 7:38:36 AM 5/21/04 “Ummmmmm, that would be cool if I weren't underage......” 1:13:20 PM 5/21/04 “Red, what kind of elevation gain is in the 70 miles of your 2 day trip? Do you run, or just walk fast? This sounds like trail running, like humanpackmule said. There is a "hike" in the Sawtooths where they set a 15 mile and a 30 mile and a 45 mile loop, for people to "hike" in a day, and arrive back at the starting point. I've done some endurance things, but not fast hiking. Is it just running in a more interesting environment?” 1:46:33 PM 5/21/04 “<sigh>...the young are always in a hurry...” 1:47:59 PM 5/21/04 “I'm not really sure about the elevation changes I'll have to look at the map and go over that. The three of us that did the hike had packs and overnighted the thing, and we were walking when we did this. Aside from that, I'm not really sure what this would qualify as with regards to trail running or not, since we didn't run yet covered a long distance in a short amount of time.” 3:13:26 PM 5/21/04 “I'll try to simplify what Red is saying. It works like this. We hit the trail before seven and we walk all day. We only stop every once in a while, we eat our lunch and or snacks while walking. We are all athletic so our fast pace is maintained throughout the entire day. And by the evening, we have covered a great distance.” 4:27:41 PM 5/21/04 “When mapleleaf joins the Uberhikers. Hey, What was that? Whhoooooossshhhhh - I dunno, I think it was a tree! Yo! Check out that spring! VVrrRRrrrroooOOooommmmMM - no time to stop, It'll screw up my average MPH! HEY! Anyone seen Johnny?!? ShhhWWwWwuuuSssHhhhhHH - If he can't keep up, He must die! WAIT, I gotta pee!!! dripdrippiddledrip -ahh, good thing I'm wearing depends! We've been runn,..er, hiking all day, can we stop? ZZzzZzzoooOOoOommMMmmM!!! - Hi-Dee-Hoh, fifty miles to go!!!” 4:37:18 PM 5/21/04 “Hmmm, sarcastic yet entertaining, I like it! I actually took my spy glass to do some observing along the way, and we did stop frequently for pee breaks, or in the case of turbohikr87, poo breaks. It was a pleasant experience, getting a lot of scenery in a short amount of time. Why see one spring when you can see ten of them?! Precisely. Anyway, cause people are paying more attention to this thread than the C & O Canal one, I have a six day hike planned starting on June 1st. Anyone interested check out the C&O Canal thread. I put the itenerary there. Anyone is welcome. "Hi-Dee-Hoh, fifty miles to go!!!"” 7:13:00 PM 5/21/04 Pride Swallowing! “Well, all joking aside, I didn't mean this as a "I'M COOLER THAN YOU!!" thread, my bad. The reason that the entire concept of uber-hiking was started was that my friends love hiking to death, but rarely have more than a day or two to do a trail in, hence why we haul to finish them up. If I offended anyone, I'm sorry (aside from the colostomy(sp?) bag comment, I'm quite proud of that) but seriously, any tips anyone can give me as to how I can best do some uber-hiking, I'm all for it.” 7:30:24 PM 5/21/04 “RedO, I doubt you offended anyone around here, certainly not me! I'm just funnin'! I say do it, do it, do it 'til your satisfied!” 10:22:04 PM 5/21/04 “i'm offended.” 5:18:38 PM 5/22/04 “"Uber-Hiking?" "RedOctober?" Our boards been invaded by Kraut Communists?” 5:33:33 PM 5/22/04 For the people.... “Indeed, re-education time for Capitalist pig dogs.....” 6:54:05 PM 5/22/04 “it appears the worst of our fears have come true the fascist krauts and the pinko commies have joined forces. god help us all...” 9:16:43 AM 5/23/04 “AHHHHHHHHHHHHH MOTHERLAND!!!” 6:13:29 PM 5/23/04 “Red, we cranked out about 22 miles in like 9 hours yesterday. Even my father kept up (i forced him), and he can still walk today. We did this with full packs because our original itinerary was to hike 12 yesterday and 10 toady. But, we decided that we had time to hike to the end of the trail and camp at the end(which was still very much in the woods). Ahh, the things i do for giggles.” 9:30:55 PM 5/23/04 “Ahh yes. We hit the site where we planned to spend the night at about 1pm sooo.... on we went. We saw 4 snakes, 1 was dead and 1 was a rattler - 1 turtle, deer, frogs and tadpoles. And of course, what kind of Scout hike would it be without a tadpole eating contest! I think it was some sort of "commie" mind game tourture that made me hike so far!” 7:40:21 AM 5/24/04
