“nope, I'm not really counting that one. I drove up to the parking lot, hiked the main trail to the summit and then hiked down around the adjacent trails including the AT for a little bit, but not enough to really count. I'd like to do the forney ridge trail one of these days. get as close as I can to the bottom and hike up to the top.”

“That'd be a ballbuster for sure. I did Clingmans by starting at Newfound Gap, that last 1/2 mile is one of the toughest i've done. Didn't help that it was Jan and the trail (gully would be a better description) was full of ice. Needed crampons.”

It was my first Western hike. I was awe struck from the get-go. The hike was great great great.

On day three, I decided to try the peak that was looming above our camp. Dude says "go for it".

I packed the 10 essentials and struck out. I topped the saddle, and selected the route of choice with my binoculars.

I had to negotiate a snow chute on the way up. Mid-way across it, I looked down. Whoa! The seemingly tiny rocks below the chute were the size of a Buick. I had netiher crampons nor ice ax - just a stick. I continued (seein's how I'm a helluva man! lol!)
I had never heard the term "post holeing", but did the manuever by instinct.

I crossed scree, too. Then scrambled up solid rock.

Upon reaching the summit, I encountered a lone male mountain goat. He moved like a white shadow. Awesome.

I sat atop the peak and perused ranges and valleys as far as 200 miles away.

The Lost River Range, White Cloud Peaks, Salmon River Range, The Bitterroots. Pesimeroi Valley, Snake River Plain. Big Butte, Middle Butte.

And waaaaaaaaay off there? No... not the Tetons?

I sat til almost dusk.

That moment will never be superceded.

Not by Rainier.
Not by Everest...


The Mighty Mighty Tacoma has bagged several passes in excess of 10,000 ft, including an 11'er in CO.”

“One of the most De-licous passes I have crossed-and with a nifty solar toilet tucked in the woods to boot. Sahale is a great hike in teh late summer. Even with the icky road and mega long drive (it's in the middle of nowhere!!) the place is overcrowded. The parking lot alone can handle like 50 or more cars! But worth it, oh yes!
Of all of them, I think my favorite was Mt. Winchester, it sits between Mt. baker and the Canadian Border. It has one of the few fire lookouts left, and you can stay in it. The open air privy on the backside is a dream. 360* views :-D”

My list has a lot of Sierra Peaks, a lot of Washington Pk, and a few Idaho pks, but I've had 30+ years to accumulate it. I'm lucky to get in 5 to 7 backpacks a year now, and maybe a peak or two, and thats with 2 kids who are now old enough to backpack.”

We found a cabin in the woods and found a Power Bar to eat, first thing I ate in like a week. But the radio in the cabin was all busted because the bad guys were chasing us in a helicopter.

“Gojo, I've never even heard of Iron Creek Point, but you make it sound pretty interesting. I had a similar experience my 3rd time on Rainier, as the sun rose of a sea of clouds that hung at about 8000 feet, and we were about at the 12,000 foot level, a few thousand feet short of the summit. First Little Tahoma was sillouetted in the pink of dawn, then the clouds below us turned pink, and then they were a golden color, and we could see Mt. Stuart and the Stuart Range off in the distance, and Mt Adams and St Helens to the east. And from the top, we could see Hood and the 3 Sisters in Oregon. That was awesome, and I got a photo of the golden colored sea of clouds. Another photo of the glacier and crevasses from that morning on Rainier are on Phils photo page,

Mt. Maude, Baker, Aix, and most of your other ones, I've never done. Good luck on Rainier. Last time I tried it, I was just not in good enough shape, and we turned back at about 13,000' from altitude sickness.”

Royal Arches (5.6, grade III), with Joe Schletz, we got to cross a very hard part by crawling across a log, which is since gone. Very exposed.
La Escuela (AI), an aid pitch at the foot of El Cap, very exposed and scary
Overhang Bypass (5.6, grade III) with Joe Schletz, went pretty smoothly

I drove into Sawmill last fall, and followed unimproved FS roads to within a mile or so of the aforementioned saddle.”
