“Mapquest found Cashiers okay for me, and using the directions that rox posted, I was able to find the road to the trailhead from where Mapquest said cashiers was.”

“same here, but getting directions to cashiers then going back east 13 miles to get to the trailhead will get you bad directions coming from South Carolina.”

“I won't be getting there till between 7 or 8pm. I thought I could leave school early but we can't miss the day before or after a vacation day... soooo here I am captive till 3pm.. I think I have close to a 4hr drive..not totally sure about that since I have never been there.”

“I had forgotten that NC is doing work on I-40 through the Gorge and that it is down to one lane going east bound....grrrr
expected delays could be up to an hour. I sure hope everyone is leaving NC and not going there.”

I wish Roam could have been there ...we swam in the falls and hiked the summit...it was wonderful and we didnt' get lost...whooo hooo

Oh, the car got fixed, hopefully it'll hold up for a little while. Depending on how my confidence in it holds out I might head up there with the kids this weekend or next.”

“So your going to head up to Panthertown or just to NC?”

“If I go up, it'll be to Panthertown, unless some group convinces me otherwise, but I really wanted to see the place firsthand.”

“It is great ..tics were out though..and Lake Toxoway is right there at the beginning..a great place to swim.”

“Panthertown and other pictures

I had a great time this past weekend even though it got cut short. It was great to meet some new CH. After I left you guys I headed up Hwy 281 north, wrong thing to do. It turned into a gravel road for 20 or so miles, very slow going up and over the mountains with sharp turns.

I stopped at Bryson City for a while and thought about staying a Deep Creek Campsite in the Smokies. After I got there I decided against that.

I drove on over to Fontana Dam and got some good pictures.
I went to the shelter to check it out the trail journal in hopes of finding something from Mile Monster or Stormbringer...nothing except an entry by Nowslimmer a few weeks earlier.

I left there and headed out on the Cherohala Skyway. I stopped and got one pic before the clouds rolled in. Driving in the clouds on top of the mountain was cool except for all the damn motor cyclist speeding like crazy. I almost hit 2 because they were in my lane going around a curve and you didn't see them till they were on you. I want to go back and take this road again. Lots of trailheads start on this road.”

“That is a very cool drive over to Tellico & there's a really really good little barbq place just at the foot of the mtn in TN.

You can access the snowbird area from up on the Cherohala as well as lots of stuff in the Nantahala NF. You can also turn off onto some of those little gravel roads and get lost or end up back in Robbinsville - eventually.”

“There were a lot of bikes on the Parkway too. But they didn't seem to be flying. There were even bycyclist on it.”

I'm from the area, been to Panthertown a good bit, but I don't know much about the specifics.
Whats the trail distance? Could we go hiking for 2-3 days?”

“Have fun! I like Panthertown. I'm wanting to get back there to do some exploring below Warden Falls.
I am very excited! I am going to Thompson River Gorge this Friday!! Wooo hoo! Its gonna be time to slide and swim. I wonder if Emmett will slide wi' me or if he'll just take pichers?”

“mtnram, you can hike for 2 or 3 days if you go slow stop to take lots of pics and don't mind setting up camp early. I'm plannin on taking LOTS of pics, wanna try and get a good shot of several of the waterfalls.

danababy, it should be good, i'm gonna head up to Greenland Creek first and then maybe down to the Warden Falls area next. I don't really have a plan.

I've got many places let to explore in NC. I literally keep a running wish list organized by state as to where I want to go. It grows ever longer. :^D”

“Yep, I had the good fortune to live about two miles from the entrance to Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Area back in 98/99. I'll someday figure out a way to live there again. Until then I have to travel to visit the "promised land"”

The most fun..I thought about Pantertown was all the swimming areas. My group has already decided to return there in the fall..like Sept. or Aug...and get a base camp and day hike each day...hard to leave that great swimming hole over by School house falls.”
