HELP!!
I think I've lost all of the graduation photos for one of the classes where I work.

I've tried using Photorescue on the 1 GB flash card, but can't seem to find them.

I found stuff dating back to March and all the rest of my graduation pics but not the ones I need.

Anyone familiar with retreivals.

I'm wondering since I erased the pics by mistake then wrote the card again on the same date with the same pic numbers that they may be gone for good.

They are unreplaceable. Unless I can get the grad class back here in grad gowns and caps for a pic.

Crap crap crap. My boss is out till next week. Wait till she hears this one!

What the hell, just start drinking now.

Won't help, but you won't feel the pain when she whacks you.

Call the local computer company and ask about data retrieval services.

I think lizs got some lost photos back. Wait and see what she says.

I think lizs had some similar problems and was able to get her pics back.

Do you have the media in a reader on your computer?

Yea, I'm way better looking than bit. ;-)

Yes, I have the card in a reader hooked up to the computer. Would it be better to use the original camera to computer cable?

I'm using a demo version of Photo rescue that I downloaded. It said if the demo couldn't find it that its not worth buying the full version.

Can you see them on the camera? If you can't see them either way, then they're probably gone.

Did you ever copy them off the camera and onto the computer?

Dang! I can't find the thread I posted about a year ago, it had some info about recovering digital pics. Opie helped me out on that one.

With a 1 GB memory card you may still be in luck if the pics weren't written over and maybe they're just tagged as deleted. Perform a scandisk/f in MS-DOS and save everything that comes up. Then change the filename suffixes bak to .jpg and take a look at them. Good luck.

That's a good idea, but I'm betting PhotoRescue does essentially the same thing.
bitpusher
3:34:13 PM
5/19/04

SORRY!

That's chkdsk/f, NOT scandsk/f. Recovered files will show up with a .CHK extension. Save these files to your harddrive and rename all those suffixes back to .JPG

They were never taken off the camera. If they had been I could have gotten them off our tape backup.

Give Bobo's second suggestion a try and see what you come up with.

OK, for a computer dummy walk me through that on a Windows machine.
Indiana John
3:43:10 PM
5/19/04

OK...open up an MS-DOS window, and then type the drive letter for your media. Then, type chkdsk/f, and let it do its thing. Then, you can go back to Windows Explorer and see if you have any .chk files on the media. If so, use Windows Explorer to copy those to your hard drive, then change the extension on each file from .chk to .jpg. You should be able to view the files then by just double-clicking on them.

Oh, and be sure follow the drive letter with a colon when you type it in...little detail there.

Oy.

OK, go to "Start/Programs/Accessories" and click on "Command Prompt". That should open the DOS window.

LOL. If you're really worried, may I suggest you try a computer website instead of a hiking website. Not that hikers don't know computers, but you might increase your odds a wee bit.

Good luck (with the boss).

Remember to wait a minute for the Betadyne to dry before you start cutting, though....

No luck,

I got no .chk files on the media
Indiana John
4:28:00 PM
5/19/04

That means it couldn't find any deleted files on the media. I think they're gone, man...sorry.

What makes you think you deleted them? Did you delete some files when you were using the camera?
bitpusher
4:31:11 PM
5/19/04

Yeah, I'm giving up and starting drinking.

I took the pics then took some test shots in a new location. I deleted the test shots then took a couple more shots at the new location.

When I downloaded, the file numbers start with 1 after the test shots, so I must have deleted everything before that.

I know better than to delete in camera. It's never a good idea. Should've waited and weeded them out at download.

Wait for the betadyne to dry before cutting? I think you may want some drugs first, no?

You have a Canon A80, right? I think there's a setting on there so it won't reuse the file numbers...you might want to set up the camera so that it doesn't reuse the file numbers.
bitpusher
4:40:10 PM
5/19/04

That should say couple hundred more shots at the new location. I was able to retrieve those from the card but nothing earlier. The test shots and the ones before are missing.
Indiana John
4:40:14 PM
5/19/04

These were on the Fuji S1 Pro. but I think it has the same setting somewhere. You're right, that probably would have saved me considering the card will hold around 450 shots

There are plenty of graduations going on all over the place. Shoot one of them and no one will ever be the wiser.

They just started last year getting an 11x14 of this class framed and hung in the Alumni Commons. They already have the frame ready. Each member of the graduating class also gets a 5x7 copy of the pic
Indiana John

just make the picture of a different class out of focus so they can't tell it isn't them.

See if your camera made another file. It is possible that you are looking in the current file and the camrera has them stored in another file.

Another thing:

On my D1, I use to take a bunch of picture. Turn the camer off and then back on. The camera would tell me that there were no picture. If I took the card and put in the reader on the computer, the pictures were there. Try all three. connect the camer to computer. Take card out and try reading it. (Make sure you see all hidden files) and then Try just viewing the files from the camrea.

( I am sure you have looked, but make sure they are not on another disk. God knows I have had many of panics like you are having to find that I had the pictures on another disk.)

the files were on the card, or on the cams internal memory...if they were ever written to the card....they are still there...unless fully wiped numerous times, very, very thouoghly....i suggest finding another file recovery program..one that lets you download the full version for 15-30 days...then find the key code for the full version online..or find a key code generator. I would recommend which one to use..but it's on my home comp...and i'm away...but if they were on the card...they are there

Yes, that's the thing. Unless they've been overwritten, the data are still there.

I second Fiddle's suggestion. Just make sure the pics are mainly of people with their back turned, or get really good at photoshopping heads onto bodies.

If this downward trend of agreeing with Violin continues, I may have to start self-medication.
