Hi, backpackers, I am pretty fresh to this field. But I had a good time for my first backpacking. I wonder...are there any good mountains for me, the beginners??!!

Sorry WannaZ, all the hikers on this board are uber hikers who have all hiked the 1,482,959 toughest, highest, meanest, most impossible to climb mountains in the world. Have you tried Delaware?

Wanna, the Virginia High Country around Damascus, VA is beautiful, but it can be a little chilly, even in the summer.

Where all the easy hikers at? There is a hikers convention in town this weekend. I hear they'll all be at Madams Organ on Saturday.

Welcome to TT, Wanna. You'll find some good advice here, among the banter. I'd give you some advice on peaks, but you are in a geographic I know nothing about. Sounds like others will get you going in the right direction. I know that most peaks can be climbed by a route that is not technical. As you get more under your belt, you may choose the more technical route for the fun and challenge. Happy trails!

Wanna, if you liked the hike up Big Devils Stairs, there's plenty of more places to see. I know most areas in the West have a guide to climbing the peaks, and there are also guide books to trails, hikes, mountain bike trails, canoe and kayak guides, ect. There are probably books like that for your area.

Handsdown the east rules the world of backpacking. Well, they're second to the south. The west sucks. It's all burned up which has made food for grizzly bears scarce, backpackers beware.

North Carolina is the best state for backpacking, although PA probably has the best trail network.
EarthNsky

In fact, PA is a great state for beginners. Mountains aren't too high, trails are easy to follow (unless your in the Rock presinct) and the state takes its trails more seriously than anyother state.

Hey, folks. Don't forget to check out New York and New England. Though a bit farther from DC, NY's Adirondacks are surprisingly isolated and remote and NH's White Mountains arguably have the best views east of the Mississippi.

South Central PA
I'd suggest for some mountain climbs either the Ohiopyle segment of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail or the Lost Turkey Trail, both of which lie approximately 1 hour's drive from the Maryland border. If you need maps, just ask.
