San Francisco day hike this weekendView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 45 of 45 messages posted.
I want to do a day hike in Northern Ca “hi, hikers, I will be back to San Francisco, North Ca this weekend to see my parents. However, Im definitely interested in a day hike back to Northern Ca. Is there anyone who wants to join me and give me some idea where we should go? 'cause Im just the beginner.” 9:17:15 AM 5/25/04 “there is a trip to Yosemite NP this weekend. Not sure how far that is from SanFran.” 10:02:56 AM 5/25/04 “Wanna, you could do some dayhiking at MT. Diablo state park, it's not too far from San Fran. Has a few peaks over 3000 feet and should present a decent, challenging hike with great views of san fran and the ocean. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517” 10:24:07 AM 5/25/04 “That's where my grandparents live. I could literally hike Mt. Diablo from my grandparents front door.” 10:32:01 AM 5/25/04 “Wanna, that would be a good one for you.” 10:47:23 AM 5/25/04 “I would also suggest heading up to Muir Woods.” 10:54:13 AM 5/25/04 link to trail map 10:54:39 AM 5/25/04 “EarthNsky, what are the distances like on those trails. How far to the summit?” 11:15:14 AM 5/25/04 11:17:00 AM 5/25/04 Bison “Where is Muir woods?” 11:17:28 AM 5/25/04 IJ “the trails all look like they are between 2-5 miles long. So a dayhike would probably be about 8 miles total.” 11:18:17 AM 5/25/04 “Thanks, I'll be out there later in June and may check out this trail one day.” 11:22:02 AM 5/25/04 “Muir Woods is North of San Fran.” 11:24:26 AM 5/25/04 “looks like a cool place to do some exploring. I bet it gets packed!!!! Especially this weekend.” 11:26:05 AM 5/25/04 11:26:16 AM 5/25/04 thanks Bison “that looks cool too” 11:30:04 AM 5/25/04 “BTW - ATCF distance from my grandparents house to the summit of Mt. Diablo - 6.22 miles. Next time I visit them I'll hike up there and use their front door as the trailhead.” 11:33:57 AM 5/25/04 “thanks guys...so, Muir Woods or Mt Diablo??????.......ummmm.....” 12:27:09 PM 5/25/04 “I saw Muir Woods on Sunday. Its back to Baltimore for me today.....(sniff!!) We had lunch with Phaedrus yesterday with a view of Alcatraz.” 12:42:45 PM 5/25/04 “Muir woods looks cool. Is Phaedrus in San Fran?” 1:09:28 PM 5/25/04 “how far is Muir Woods from SanFran?” 1:38:52 PM 5/25/04 “EarthNsky, from the web site it looks like about 5.6 miles the GG bridge. Looks like a pretty touristy place. Are there places to get away from all the people?” 1:57:43 PM 5/25/04 “muir woods gets very croded...just a warning :)” 2:23:57 PM 5/25/04 Thats... “crowded” 2:25:23 PM 5/25/04 “Free, any somewhat isolated (quiet dayhikes) within public transit of the San Fran area?” 2:28:14 PM 5/25/04 “I like the marin headlands....dont know how quit it is though, its been a while since Ive been there.” 2:29:40 PM 5/25/04 “That looks pretty cool too! Thanks Free. That gives me few choices and should be plenty considering the short time I'll be in the area.” 2:38:45 PM 5/25/04 “here are some pictures taken from Mt. Diablo.” 2:52:47 PM 5/25/04 3:04:36 PM 5/25/04 “more mt. diablo photos http://mac.andcheese.org/diablo/ good hike planning info link http://www.mdia.org/seven_popular_hikes.htm Apparently on Mt. Kilamajaro in Africa has a better view (land area) than Mt. Diablo. Interesting. Mt. Shasta can be seen from the summit on clear days.” 3:13:34 PM 5/25/04 “"Apparently on Mt. Kilamajaro in Africa has a better view (land area) than Mt. Diablo." EarthNsky 03:13:34 PM Wow, I hope so, Kilimanjaro a hell of a lot higher than Mt. Diablo.” 3:39:55 PM 5/25/04 “ha, well, from what I have read you can see the most land mass from the summit of Mt. Diablo, that is excluding Kilamajaro.” 4:27:40 PM 5/25/04 “That makes somewhat more sense.” 6:39:00 PM 5/25/04 “So, is there anybody who wants to join me either to Muir Woods or Mt. Diablo? I really want to see if there's someone interested in this trip to either one, then I can make an adjustment to myself. I'd love to have a company.” 7:07:42 PM 5/25/04 “If it were a San Francisco gay hike Phaedy would be there.” 7:39:47 PM 5/25/04 “Don't forget Mt Tamalpais near Muir Woods or drive another 25 miles north and hit Pt Reyes. Try the coast trail for good ocean views. Just turn back when you are tired. Mt Tam is a little tough but the views are awesome. You can drive to the top of Mt Diablo but the trails are great too. For less crowded redwoods head south of SF to Big Basin or Henry Cowell. You can also catch the end of the Skyline to the sea trail that starts at Waddell beach and heads towards Big Basin. That would be your closest trailhead right off 1 south of SF. Have fun!” 11:25:51 PM 5/25/04 “So, I decided to hike Mt. Diablo...I have to check the weather in bay area also since I have been to the east coast for a while, no idea what's going on back there. But definitely Im looking forward to it, and hope more people can join me...” 10:15:45 AM 5/26/04 “It's been on the cool side around here lately - lots of overcast in the mornings. Only in the 70s out Mt. Diablo way I think. But it would be pretty toasty for hiking if it was in the more normal 80s out that way....” 10:28:08 AM 5/26/04 “Beside the weather, any idea that I should keep in my mind???...This will be my first time planing and hiking my myself...so, wish experienced hikers can offer me some wonderful tips.” 11:40:26 AM 5/26/04 “I'm working Saturday, so I'll have to skip this one. Thanks, though!” 11:50:00 AM 5/26/04 “Water and don't get lost. Won't be a problem on Diablo. You do know about filtering your water? Lot's of cows call the slopes of Diablo home. Always tell someone where you are going and when you should return.” 12:59:58 PM 5/26/04 “Phaedrus - the hike is on Sunday. I hope you can join me. apeman - thanks for the tips.” 7:26:31 PM 5/26/04 “bump” 12:11:25 PM 5/27/04 “Just saw this thread. Definitely reconsider and think about Point Reyes National Seashore. There aren't many places like it. It's beautiful. I have obligations Sat or would join you.” 2:12:24 PM 5/27/04 “bump...” 10:08:19 AM 5/28/04
