I plan to meet at the Mitchell Canyon ranger station at 9am. From here I plan on get into mitchell rock trail, take that to the eagle peak trail and cross eagle peak. Then I will get on the ridge trail for short distance and then get on prospectors trail. After that, I will take the north peak trail to the summit. There is a museum on the top of the summit as well as lots of great views. It has been said that Mt. Diablo has some of the most outstanding views in the U.S. For my route back to the car, I plan to take juniper trail to the dear flat road trail, then get on the meridian trail and take that to the mitchell canyon fire road and it will take me back to the car. It will be a loop hike with a total of 9 miles. Elevation gain and loss should be around 2000 feet. We can have a pinic on the summit :o) Hope many TTers can join me.” 8:25:30 PM 5/25/04 “Thanks for the invite, but its a little too far for us to drive for a dayhike. We'll be hiking and snowboarding in Mammoth during the 4 day holiday. Maybe another time, if you're down south? Thanks!” 9:44:41 PM 5/25/04 sorry “My son and I are leaving Friday on a four day/three night BP trip. Thanks for the invite!” 11:13:52 PM 5/25/04 “Thanks so much for the invite but unfortunately I will be on a fly fishing trip in Northern California. Funny... I almost did this exact same hike last weekend but ended up at the Pacific Rim Festival in Old Sacramento instead. Hope you have a WONDERFUL time! Freedom” 11:44:34 PM 5/25/04 “Hey, I live at the base of Montana del Diablo! I'll give this hike some consideration but I've been really yearning to camp Sat evening near Rock City and get some night photos of the area. Maybe I can meet you and others at the summit for scones and tea? I'll keep my one good eye on this thread.” 4:16:15 AM 5/26/04 “I would LOVE to go, however, since I no longer live on the left coast its kind of impossible :(.” 6:38:16 AM 5/26/04 “no problem, guys even you can't make it this time. Hopefully you can join me next trip!!!! I will take pics when i get there, seems can't wait to be back home after 3 months I have not seen my parents in Ca.” 10:05:59 AM 5/26/04 “I'm another one that can't make it....to many Honey Doo's. Enjoy yourself and take lots of pictures!” 10:30:38 AM 5/26/04 “can't wait...oh, is there anyone hiked Mt. Diablo before? Just hope that people can offer me some specific idea that i should pay attention to...” 11:42:28 AM 5/26/04 “I'll keep my one good eye on this thread." Rockman 04:16:15 AM 05/26/04 ARRRR matey!” 11:58:14 AM 5/26/04 “Hey mtsteve!!! How is your giardia? Has it gone away yet? are you feeling better? When are you going to make it to indiana?” 12:10:07 PM 5/26/04 bump “im bumping this to the top so more californians can see.” 7:23:37 PM 5/26/04 “bump” 12:39:02 PM 5/27/04 9:53:43 AM 5/28/04 “Please join.....should be a beautiful weekend in the bay area!” 10:00:13 AM 5/28/04 “bump-idy-bump” 12:51:59 PM 5/28/04 “take a lot of photos Wanna. Have a great hike!! Look forward to reading your report and seeing your photos.” 4:42:18 PM 5/28/04 “Im in SF now, just tired after more than 7 hours on the plane. But really look forward to the hike tomorrow. And the weather is very nice today. Everything should be wonderful...:o)” 10:34:35 PM 5/29/04 “wow...I can't believe that I did it. I hiked the Mt. Diablo back to the bay area on Sunday, and it was awesome and i had so much fun. But it seems like the mountains in east coast are more beautiful. How do you guys think?” 10:05:47 AM 5/31/04 “Wanna, Mt. Diablo isn't in "the mountains". To find the closest "mountains" to Walnut Creek where Mt. Diablo is, you have to drive east to hit the Sierra range, or, drive south & toward the ocean to the Santa Lucia range, or north to the Coast range. Mt. Diablo is pretty in its' own right & has some nice wildflowers, but it is certainly not "the mountains" by any stretch.” 10:43:08 AM 5/31/04 “I've never been to Mt. Diablo. When I think of West Coast mountains, I think of the Sierras.” 10:44:15 AM 5/31/04 “ummmm, I don't know. Since I'm the beginner, I think some part of Mt. Diablo was hard for me. Plus, this was my first time hiking by myself, I was so happy that I didn't get lost. How come you guys don't think Mt. Diablo is "the mountains"???” 10:48:29 AM 5/31/04 “Find some photos of Yosemite. Then it will all make sense. Altitudes on this coast are a lot higher than the East coast, so it's confusing. What would be the highest peak back East would be in the foothills out here.” 11:03:01 AM 5/31/04 “wannabp - have you heard of Oakland Mountain? One of my friends in bay area told me that I should go there also. Yosemite...ummm....I remember I saw some photos before from my previous boss in her wedding picture. differences???” 11:15:56 AM 5/31/04 “Just look. If you can't see the difference, then it doesn't exist for you.” 11:51:34 AM 5/31/04 “I can see Mt Diablo from my backyard near Sacramento. It's a nice hill that is prominent from it's flat central valley location. Now the same distance looking the opposite way from my house lie 20 peaks near tahoe all over 10,000 feet. Now which do you think I frequent? Diablo would be a place I would go in the winter when the Sierra are buried in 20 feet of snow. Remember California is a land of extremes. Highest mountain in the continental US, lowest point in the US, tallest tree, most massive tree, the Pacific, the deserts....I've lived here my whole life and have barely made a dent in exploring this place. Glad you enjoyed the hike. Mt Diablo is pretty and a good place for beginners. I wish more people took the time to start off slowly instead of plunging into the wilderness. If it is something you'll want to continue you will feel the pull. Be careful and enjoy!” 1:42:39 PM 5/31/04 “Wannaz, a lot of us here in CA hike in the Sierra, since my pic's can't hold a candle to Buck's, WindWalkers (or many others... just picked these two for examples) I'm sending you to their sites. Take a peek, you'll see what we mean by "mountains". Buck's photo's of the John Muir trail are at http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=334185 WindWalker also has some great pics at http://www.windwalker.info/” 5:46:20 PM 5/31/04 “Holy crap, Buck's pics are awesome. Hope he's making some money off those pics. They're beautiful.” 9:19:16 AM 6/01/04 “Oh, my god, Buck's photos are awesome, really impressive...Thank you so much for sharing.” 8:01:05 PM 6/01/04 “Hey, my photos from Mt. Diablo are ready. http://community.webshots.com/user/wannaz I have been so crazy with my job since I got back to DC. I will try my best to finish up the trip report tonight, hopefully!” 8:02:24 PM 6/01/04 Wanna's pics 10:50:40 PM 6/01/04 “Nice pics Wanna. What was the rescue helicopter all about? Did I miss your trip report somewhere?” 9:14:38 AM 6/02/04 “oh, sorry, I just upload my photos only after i got back to DC. I will finish the report pretty soon...this will be my first time writing it.” 12:47:44 PM 6/02/04 << back to Day hiking Mt Diablo state park page
