Someone complained about how slow it is today.
I was sitting having a nice lunch today when four women came in and sat at the table close to me.
I cringed because I just knew at least one of then would pull out a cigarette and light up.
The restaurant has a small smoking area away from where I was sitting.
No ashtrays were on their table.

Sure enough, one lit up and waved the lit cigarette all around while running her mouth. My eyes and nose started hurting at once.

I got up, paid my bill, and left.

I rarely see men do this in a restaurant.
Why do women in groups seem to think it's OK to do this?
Is this a 'chik' thing?

I dont blame you. I hate smoking. Thats one of the reasons I quit my job- everyone was allowed to smoke inside and almost everyone working there did. They didnt care if they were bothering other people and would wave cigarettes in my face constantly.

i love the fact that NY has a smoking ban.
no smoking in bars, food areas..dr's offices, anyplace that the public can go.
the only prob is, everyone stands right outside the doors. so as you enter any building your still getting aface full of smoke..

works for me :)

That's how it is here in Florida too. I like the restaurant ban, but there's plenty of ways around it. If a place has X number of square feet dedicated to bar space rather than restaurant space, and only has X number of items on the menu then they can still smoke in there. Hence one of my fave places, Lynch's Irish pub, still allows smoking.

In Washington State, you are allowed to put the cigarette out in the offender's eye.

Smokers and consideration
Congrats Gem! On your having become a non-smoker! way to go! I knew ya could do it. So Happy Anniversary Baby!
I want to say also of Gemini.. I have been around you when you did smoke. I never rememember you being anything but considerate. You always showed nice manners about your smoking even when you did light up.
I have never been a smoker, so I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to quit. It can't be easy.

Can't say I hang out with women
like that. And if I was with a group of women, and one decided to light up in a nonsmoking area I would have to inform her that she was in the wrong. When you are going to a bar or a club, it is expected. When you are trying to eat dinner and savor your food, it is just rude and inconsiderate. I do have friends that smoke, but not in nonsmoking areas. I am one of those people that notify the server and make loud comments that the a$$ can hear. =)

I used to do that kind of thing when with my girlfriends. I don't know if it's just a female thing or not, but I know I'm guilty. I stopped 5 years ago, though. I kept getting dirty looks and rude comments from people!!!!

In your country and mine more women smoke than men - at our high school it's about 2:1. There is no indoor smoking except in bars. IOntario, British Columbia and soon here oultaw tobacco even in bars.

Here's what amazed me. Heart disease is the #1 killer of both men and women and is on the rise among women whille droping among men. Women are closing the drate rate gap.

But get this, in Canada and the United States lung cancer among women is now more prevalent than ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer COMBINED!

Ok but what if she was in the smoking section and you could still smell it? Would you still be mad? I find that many of the resturants in my neighborhood have smoking sections that are very close to non smoking sections and it really does no good. I personally don't have as big a problem with it as some of you but I can fully understand. Once heard of a driver getting out of his care at a red light and throwing someone's cig butt back in their window. Hilarious.

I've noticed WAY more women smoke than men where I work. The ratio is more like 5 to 1. That's kinda sad.

So these women were smoking in a non-smoking section and the restaurant let them? And only women do that? Or is it only the women that you notice doing it...

Do you really have such a low opinion of women, Stove?

January 1st of this year, smoking in all bars became illegal in Maine. Most public places have signs that put smokers 100ft from doorways.

I personally love the idea of going on the offensive against insensitive smokers. I understand that it's an addiction and hard to quit. But don't f*ck up my air space, thank you very much. Go far away from me. I'm all for farting, squirt guns, etc. There's no law against that; right? And throwing the butt back into the car? Love it!!!

Having said all that, I don't have a problem with smokers when I go into an area where it is permitted, like a smoky bar. If I don't like it, I don't patronize that bar. As a result, there are a lot of bars I won't go to. I also don't mind occasionally puffing just a little on a cigar while sitting around a campfire (as some of you already know).

twigeater - She was smoking in a nonsmoking area with a group of women. This is not the first time I've noticed this.
Groups of women seem to always have at least one who just HAS to smoke at the group table.
I would have the same complaint against a group of men except I haven't seem or smelled this problem with men.

I fail to see where this has anything to do with a low opinion of women, other than a low opinion of women smokers that don't give a crap about anyone else.

I am a very strong proponent of treating women as equal to men.
I don't believe this gives women a free ride to act like an a$$.

Stovie, I'm glad you believe women should be treated equal to men, as I believe men should be treated equal to women as well. :)

When did I say men were stupid? show me where I said that...
I think you're referring to where I pointed out that our thought processes were different, and there's nothing wrong with that - it made the office laugh! If we were all the same what fun would it be!

I do think there's some truth in what lizs says though... ;)

I'm a smoker, but I find it incredibly rude and downright obnoxious to smoke in a non-smoking section. She shoulda been asked to put it out or move.

I don't even care to smoke in a restaurant and don't like sitting in a smoking section cause someone close will blow smoke across the table while I'm eating.

Of course in FL thats no big deal now. But still.

You're complaining???
There was a small smoking area and they lit up? They had the total right to lite up there. You did the right thing to leave because it's your right to do so, as it was there right to smoke there. If it was a man or woman is not relevant.

Suck it up Stovie! Whether you like it or not.... Smoker's DO have right's too!

ok well answer me this....near atlanta is a HUGE club that just installed a $1million dollar air treatment system because the county rode their ass about something like that...well then after they comply with the counties demands, the county promptly passes a law prohibiting smoking in bars and whatnot...now should this establishment be allowed to let smokers puff on a few or shold they call the contractors and try to get that money back(good luck)...
