Just wondering
I am hiking the Devils Path as a day hike next weekend and I am wondering what to bring. It has been a while since I have done a day hike.
That and I just wanted to start a related thread.
I am hoping to just use my camelback Mule 300ci pack and 3lt of water.

I always take my water bladder,
map
compass
guidebook if I have one.
emergency kit,
first aid kit
rain gear
bug spray
sun protection (lotion/ hat)
sometimes I'll bring my gators
camera
warmer sweater (even in summer)
yeah cliff bars are great, or the military energy bars (they are awesome)
sunflower seeds (sometimes)
emergen c drink powder

I really don't watch the weight during day hikes. Prolly forgot a couple things, but that's what I can think off right now that I don't leave without.

map, compass, digital camera, lightweight space blanket, whistle, waterproof matches and/or lighter, Swiss Army knife or SOG Paratool, headlamp, water tablets for purification, rain jacket, Camelbak bladder and hose, 50' parachute cord, clif bars, duct tape, first aid kit, hat, and sunglasses. Depending on the weather and where I'm going, I might take a lightweight fleece vest and lightweight gloves. Oh yeah - sunscreen and bug juice.

I want to survive if something happens.

On a low elevation hike, I carry water. If it's a really long hike, I add a snack to that. If it's on Mt. Rainier or at a higher elevation, I add a raincoat and a piece of warmer apparel.

I put on bug spray and (anti)sun tanning lotion ahead of time if the place calls for it.

Woah, Bobo -- are we still talking about hiking???

I usually bring maps, water (amount is a function of distance, gross Elevation gain, and temperature), first aid kit, lunch (depends on duration), pocketknife, whistle, headlamp, bug spray, matches/lighter, hat/bandanna, and some extra clothes warm enough to stay out a night without getting cold if need be for whatever reason.

You could bring raingear if the weather calls for it, but I usually don't dayhike when significant rain is expected. Other than that, I pack very basic -- it's just a casual walk in the woods. I just try to be prepared for having to spend an unexpected night in the woods...

Oh I forgot to mention that this is a 25 mile day hike with 18,000 vertical feet of gain and loss. There is a halfway resupply point where we will pass thru our camground.
Light is going to be the keyword for this trip.

Bobo you should come on this one.

This time of year (and in this neck of the woods) not a whole lot.... About half the items previously mentioned, <G>, and lotsa water.

I'm waiting for the mosquitoes to hatch --- I've got some of that new-fangled time-released 3M UltraThon to whup their asses with.

Uber hike? yes! There are other people who enjoy that sortof thing. Oh yeah, i dont think anyone mentioned that toilet paper is a necessary item. Yopu'll need it.

Ah, uberhiking, 'tis a glorious thing... Anyway, turbohikr mocks me a lot about this, but I normally take all of the usual stuff like compass, map, first aid kit, some matches, emergency blanket, some drink powder, and an energy bar or two. But here's the key, I've found a cheaper alternative than energy bars...bakery rolls. Three of those coupled with one of those squeeze tubes of peanut butter and some cheeze, and you're set for the day! Happy Trails

Uhmm, no thanks LT. I'm gonna pass on a 25 miler! But you've got the gUber-hikers around, maybe they'll go with you!

- turbo, I mentioned the toilet paper (TP). Possibly the most important thing in a daypack, never leave home without it!

Sounds like an incredible hike.
Will you go up and down repeatedly or start at sea level and hit 9000 feet? I didn't think there was anything that high back East.
Oh yeah, I would take the 'prepared for a night out' gear, especially a head lamp and extra batteries for finishing long after dark and a whistle for emergencies. And I would take way more water, unless there's water along the way.

It is up and down over 7 3500+ peaks in the Catskills, so there are many ups and downs. the total up is a little over 9000'.

Thanks for the info.

Let's see now, we did a daytrip yesterday... and we brought our cameras.... We did tie our jackets around our waist when it got hot.

Then today we took a camelbak and a sandwich farther up the trail, with our cameras, and extra jacket. Pretty windy, so we needed them.

Sorry about not being able to go this past weekend. Turbo and I day-hiked the 27.1 mile Old Loggers Path near Williamsport, PA. I recommend this trail to anyone. The scenery was beautiful, and campsites abundant. One thing though, make sure you are going counter-clockwise when you start. The inclines are steeper the other way around, as turbo and I discovered.

For day-hikes I take a tank
never know if there`s an ass out there you gota spank
a tank`s great for hills, it kicks all forms of ass
it`ll haul butt if need be, just don`t forget the gas
it also comes in handy, if you wanna go, but don`t have time to hike
there`s nothing better to have along with you, it sure beats a bike
oh, there`s better gear out there, but I haven`t got my hands on one yet
to make short work of those pesky day-hikes, I`m wantin` to get a jet;)
