Florida Trail Early November

“I've been kicking around the idea of doing a FT hike in early November.

The two sections I am considering are Apalachicola NF (either east or west) and the Suwanne River section.

It'll be a weekender only.

I DO NOT want this trip to get huge. Nothing against anyone but the smallest trip I've been on lately has been around 26 people (Scouts, like y'all couldn't see that coming) So I'd like to keep it to about eight folks or so.

“Both sections are in the panhandle between Tallahassee and Lake City (I75-I10 junction)”

I, too, have been wanting to do that area. Do you have any decent maps?

I have plans to shape up for TC-4, so I should be able to do OK on those trails. I could even start-in a day ahead.”

“I'm interested - I've heard both are nice hikes. We can all talk about who won the election.”

“theres an election, for what? is it time to elect a new ATC Committee member?”

“I'm kinda leaning towards the Suwannee section.”

“does it go along the river?

I don't know much about the northern parts of this trail at all.”

“Yes for about 41 miles from Suwanne River State Park to the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture center at White Springs.”

“I am working all that weekend. I will try to take vacation. It will be tough. 25% chance I can make it.”

“I know that I won't have enough time but I love to do an ol' afoot-afloat and hike upstream and paddle back down to the start.

Something to put in the old trip ideas folder.

I have paddled this section and the river is pretty. I think there is one or two springs along this stretch too. But DON'T hold me to that. I guess I should do a little looking into that.”

“I'll look.”

“How are FL trails? Always been on GA/NC trails... what's the terrain like?”

“Either flat or (very) gently rolling.”

“Sometimes a tad wet - although typically not in November.

We celebrate elevation gains of over 50 feet.”

“Yeah, I think it's going to be the Suwannee River section. Unless the river goes over 60 ft deep and we will have to change plans.

I need a few days to recover from that. ;-)”

I had to laugh at the 'City' of Jacksonville. As I came into city limits on I-10 from the west there was no city to be found. Just miles and miles of pine trees.
Dang city incorporated an entire county.”

“HPM - yep - something had to give and posting on the net fell a little below feeding kids sooo. It's great fun, but nearly all consuming in these early months. October/November should be a good time to get a first bag night in.

North FL should be real nice in Oct/Nov.”

“Stovestomper thats exactly what they did. Once you hit I95 its developed all the way to the beach. There used to be a few wooded spots but those fast dissapearing.
