Especially ones that may have an itch and are working on a computer!

"An Amtrak train on its way to Washington was stopped in Cumberland, Md., for several hours [4] and searched yesterday after passengers reported that two men of "Middle Eastern descent" were acting suspiciously, the FBI said.

The incident began shortly before 11 a.m., when some servicemen saw one man putting something under his shirt and another working on a computer, authorities said. The servicemen contacted an Amtrak employee, who notified Cumberland police, said W. Faron Taylor, Maryland deputy state fire marshal.

Barry Maddox, an FBI spokesman, said the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and other law enforcement officers detained and interviewed the men and determined that there was no need for concern. Both were released. Bomb-sniffing dogs searched the train, which had left Chicago on Saturday night, and found no explosives.

An Amtrak spokesman said the train's 233 passengers, including the two men, arrived by bus in Washington at 10:30 last night. He said the train was sent later to Washington without passengers.

A spokesman said trains are stopped because of similar reports about once a week"

A month after 9/11/01 I took a flight to Houston. I sat next to a mid-eastern man who started saying his afternoon prayers as we taxied. He was kind of mumbling, but it was pissing me off. He shut up after we got airborne. I was going to complain to the stewardess, but he never said another word.

The Greyhound driver called the Baltimore cops on a Bangladeshi man who I was sitting next to.

He had a bulge under his jacket that turned out to be a valuables purse that one wears around the neck in which he kept passport, etc.

The black cop and black driver didn't like the guy's attitude.........or brown skin either.

It wasn't the color of the skin, probably. It was most likely the smell. I've yet to meet a bangladeshi who bathes.

How many would that be?

In the DC area many people are pulled over for D.W.B. - Driving While Black. In fact many teens in Prince Georges County (one of the top affluent Black Counties in the US) carry lawyer cards. Yes, the Police force is also mostly black.

Need a new crime Acronym: T.W.B - Traveling While Brown.

I don't know, bearmagnet, maybe 10-20. At one university where I used to work, there were 2 bangladeshi CIS professors, and a bunch of bangladeshi (and Indian) students going through the program. I *hated* going to their offices - they smelled like, well, something that smells bad.

In all fairness, not all of them smelled of b.o. HAPPY NOW?!?!?!?

No. Where was this?

I was on a bus from Syracuse to Potsdam that was half filled with Amish traveling to a funeral in the dead of winter. They filled the front of the bus and then each one proceeded to use the bathroom once the bus got moving (apparently they were afraid to use the bus terminal facilities).

That was the most horrendous stink I have ever encountered.

No one called the cops on them.

Hey BM.....if black cops are pulling over black teenagers, it would seem that they aren't being racist. While profiling can be and is abused, other times it makes sense. This DWB thing is hyped for maximum effect.

Ifa dark skinned, middle-eastern looking person gets undeservedly hassled on a bus, that's unfortunate but that's life in W's world today.
JO

It is still racism. And the stats confirm that its profiling. profiling shouldn't be considered "unfortunate". It can be step to greater abuse to which each step might be considered more "unfortunate' than the last.

Japanese internment was unfortunate. Separate but equal was "unfortunate". Maybe unequal pay based on gender is unfortunate?

Life isn't Fair or Perfect
BM

Save the emotional outpouring over the other issues for a discussion of them. I'll be right there with you on those. There no need to change the subject to deflect from your weak argument. Comparing hassling a Bangladeshi bus rider to Japanese-American internment is a farce. An elderly woman being searched at an airport, while that BAngladeshi goes unchecked...now that's ridiculous.

Black cops being wary of black teenagers may well be profiling, but it isn't racism. I'm glad they profile. If 80 yr old white women were commiting most crimes then it would make sense to watch them....to profile them. Granny patrol.

Your argument reminds me of myself, say about 20 years ago. That was before I went to work in public schools, raised a family, was robbed, etc. Maybe you're a geezer like me and just hard core, but I suspect you're fairly young. Live a little.

Bear, I have to agree with JO on this one. Profiling is inherently a negative thing, especially when put in the popular context. But, if you examine the field of crime fighting and detective work, you will come to the conclusion that, due to the nature of this beast, this does involve a bit of reasoning that could be stretched and considered profiling. The fact is, it can't be avoided. At this point, it comes down to a question of degree. In this day and age of political correctness being a barometer for way too many things, this issue is abused on both ends. There are people out there that are using this as a defense when it shouldn't be as well as law enforcement people taking it to the extent that it becomes an abuse of power...

Ouch. Let me think

"Save the emotional outpouring over the other issues for a discussion of them. I'll be right there with you on those. There no need to change the subject to deflect from your weak argument. Those were just thoughts on what else might have been termed "unfortunate" at the time and I think they do apply. Wasn't being "emotional", just exploring.

"Black cops being wary of black teenagers may well be profiling, but it isn't racism. I'm glad they profile. If 80 yr old white women were commiting most crimes then it would make sense to watch them....to profile them. Granny patrol."

Yes. It is racism. These people are being pulled over for the color of there skin. Doesn't matter who is pulling them over.

Your argument reminds me of myself, say about 20 years ago. That was before I went to work in public schools, raised a family, was robbed, etc. Maybe you're a geezer like me and just hard core, but I suspect you're fairly young. Live a little.

I am older and I was mugged at gunpoint by two Hispanic punks. I don't cross the street to avoid any Hispanic I see nor do I report "suspicous" Hispanic behavior every time I see a Latino. I have also had several close encounters, near muggings, involving Black Men. And yet, I don't profile everyone I see. Somehow, I live in the most Diverse neighborhood in DC and we all seem to get along without the paranoia. I have lived quite a bit in my opinion.

We can not report on every "brown" skinned person that twitches wrong. It doesn't make sense any more than pulling every black person in a car. It's discriminatory and racist.

That makes sense Tree. Screaming "profiling" & "racism" happens often in DC and is abused, and I'll be the first to say so. However, the degree of "profiling" black drivers in PG County is severe, IMHO, and that's why I used it.

Do you not think the number of reported "suspicous" activity in regards to middle eastern people seems to be severe and paranoid?
