“ ![]() Norman Tebbit Lord Tebbit sparked fury today by suggesting ministers were responsible for Aids and obesity by "undermining marriage". Tory leader Michael Howard faced calls to withdraw the party Whip from the peer after he accused the Government of "promoting buggery". The former party chairman's remarks came in a radio discussion on rising obesity rates with Conservative frontbencher Boris Johnson. Ministers were to blame for "persuing the breakdown of family life", Lord Tebbit told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "Families now so seldom eat together. They don't prepare meals properly," he said. "Wives are virtually pressurised into thinking they ought to go out to work instead of looking after their children. "And it is the breakdown of family that is at the root of it and very poor education in these matters in schools." Marriage was being undermined by tax and social policies such as the "gay marriage Bill" currently before the Lords, he continued. "We not only have an epidemic of obesity ... we have a huge problem of Aids and the Government's attitude is to do everything it can to promote buggery. "Maybe those two are somewhat intimately connected." Tory Arts spokesman Mr Johnson was swift to distance himself from the peer. "I don't think you can say that gay marriage is responsible for the incidence of obesity, with the best will in the world," he said. Lord Tebbit replied: "I never suggested that." However, he added: "It is the attack that has been waged on the family and all the pressures of today." Gay campaigning group Stonewall called on Mr Howard to withdraw the Whip from him. Chief executive Ben Summerskill said: "These remarks are extremely distressing. "It's incredible that Lord Tebbit manages to shoehorn his extreme prejudices against gay people into a discussion on child obesity. We trust that Michael Howard will take swift action. www.thisislondon.co.uk” 10:13:28 AM 6/08/04 “good grief.” 10:23:42 AM 6/08/04 “Christianity is a mental illness.” 10:25:11 AM 6/08/04 “I wish our govt. would promote buggery....or at least promote the term "buggery".” 10:28:07 AM 6/08/04 “"Christianity is a mental illness........" Wholly chit! Never thought of it like that. Don't you think that it does serve a purpose though, Mutt? I mean, not all of the Christians I know/met seem wacky, but I have seen/met a lot that seem to have a death grip on the Lord.” 10:32:16 AM 6/08/04 “Tebbit has been saying stupid things for many many years.” 10:32:38 AM 6/08/04 “Sure, Laqtis, it serves a purpose. It seems to be a comfort to scared, insecure people. Some good charity work comes out of it. But the problem with the religion is that surrounding this core of, uh, goodness, is a vast cloud of pollution which I refer to as christofascism.” 10:35:35 AM 6/08/04 “Thanks Mutt. I ask because I am covering World Civ right now and it looks like since humans began to come together, religion has always played a major role. Matter of fact, a group of people is not techincally called a Civ until they build some sort of major worship building. I do find it very interesting that the Christians only want to start with man and go forward. One day, I would like someone to explain what "God" what doing for some billions of years before Humans, and if they thought Adam and Eve were some sort of Homoerectus or something. I mean, the we just didn't evolve to our state what, 5,000 years ago. anyways, I don't mean to degen this thread. Ynami - Has this guy been around for very long? Not knowing really all that much about Brit political process, what keeps this bozo in there?” 10:43:33 AM 6/08/04 “What keeps him there? Well he's in the House of Lords now, so he's there for life. He was a minister under Margaret Thatcher and was injured in the Brighton bombing by the IRA. I think it also left his wife in a wheelchair. He was always a darling of the far right Conservatives, and would often make borderline racist comments. Now he no longer has to run for election he has become, if anything, slightly more deranged.” 10:49:53 AM 6/08/04 “ynami - Is it true that England does not have the race problem that America has? BTW - thanks for your insight. Interesting that someone can be in there for life!” 10:51:43 AM 6/08/04 “I believe our government has been promoting buggery for decades. We the people have gotten a pretty thorough going over from Big Brother corporations that buy our politicians.” 10:52:38 AM 6/08/04 Here we go again! “But two key amendments that would have provided billions of dollars worth of incentives and revenue for the U.S. renewable energy industry were rejected. The Energy Tax Package—approved by the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and House Ways & Mean committee earlier this week—contained a five-year extension of the tax credit for the production of electricity from wind, geothermal, biomass as well as the solar ITC extension. "The tax provisions were rejected due to controversy over the revenue raisers or ‘pay-fors' in the bill. Under current rules, any tax cuts that decrease tax revenue to the Treasury have to be paid for through some other offsetting measure," said Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) President Rhone Resch in a statement released today. "Ultimately, we are still optimistic," concluded Resch. "We have developed a strong and vocal group of solar champions in Congress, and the solar ITC provisions passed by the two tax committees clearly demonstrate recognition that Congress must enact a long-term solar energy policy. The reasons for failure are unrelated to the solar provisions and while we are disappointed that the provisions are not passing now, we are confident that we will succeed in the end." A spokesman in Senator Bingaman's office also confirmed this morning that Bingaman's RPS proposal was included in a list of amendments officially ruled dead yesterday for "not being germane" to the bill. http://www.renewableenergyaccess.com/rea/news/story?id=49082&src=rss” 8:52:18 PM 6/24/07 “any tax cuts that decrease tax revenue to the Treasury have to be paid for through some other offsetting measure That's reasonable. I'm against any tax loopholes personally. If something is worth doing it's worth selling and thriving. If it's a turd and can't survive without government hand outs, then it was a bad idea and will wither on the vine.” 9:02:51 PM 6/24/07 “Yeah, how about cutting some of the incentives to big oil???? Why do they still get BIG BUCKS for R&D???” 9:11:19 PM 6/24/07 “Oh exactly. As I said, I don't believe in tax loopholes and breaks. For anyone above the poverty line.” 9:13:19 PM 6/24/07 “I need to track down a source, but I think the coal industry got $28 billion last week for R&D.... less than half what they were asking for. 'Clean Coal'.... (aHem)” 9:32:36 PM 6/24/07 “You guys do without electricity don't you? You do know most electricity is mostly generated from coal fired plants?” 9:43:25 PM 6/24/07 “How much more money do they need when they are reaping the largest profits of all time. (Big oil coal not far behind) You do remember where I worked before I moved here don't you? last edited: 6/24/07 10:02:49 PM” 10:01:59 PM 6/24/07 “Just becauswe the government cuts or eleminates funding grants doesn't mean it doesn't get done. Just like when everyone was going ape shlt about the feds cutting spending on stem cell research. They thought it all stopped in America but their are private investers who stepped in and are putting up the money. It'd be kind of hard to argue against the fact that the best research gets done when it's for profit.” 4:35:33 AM 6/25/07 “Tango..yes they are reaping HUGE profits...know why? Well lets say Sally is selling lemonade at 1.00 a glass. From that she makes 0.10 per glass on profit. If she sells 100 glasses she makes (I am making this easy) 10.00 profit...but what if the cost of the material to make it goes up...so she has to raise her price to say....1.25 a glass...BUT SHE IS STILL MAKING $0.10 a cup profit...but now she is selling the lemonade left and right...she sells 500 glasses in one day...her profits are????? $50.00 Well Brucie Libby down the street sees this. He works at the Food Max...and he doesn't get to see the benefit of free enterprise..since he is on a FIXED wage. Week one Sally walked home with $60.00 (@10.00 a day Monday thru Saturday).. Brucie got his paycheck for 120.00 (after taxes and he good union dues were taken out)...BUT the next week Sally WALKS out with $300 ($50.00 a day for 6 days)...Brucie still gets the 120.00 He gets ANGWY...WAAAAH he cries to his mayor..."SAwy done be makin EEEVIL pwofits...make her give em back". The Mayor sensing rightly there are more VICTIMS in his city than entreprenuers...has the city council pass a Windfall Profits tax. Etc etc...now Brucie can feel GOOD about himself since he made the EVIL Sally suffer. Granted Brucie NEVER improved his position, but he made the successful Sally hurt. Well that fall Brucie gets on the Basketball team...he is scoring 60 points a game and on his way to a COLLEGE Scholarship!!! WHOO HOO.... Sadly Sally's brother Stu is not that good at basketball. He does a good job of holding down the bench...but he wants some points on his record. He goes to the coach and the SCHOOL BOARD. They decide HE is right. Heck just becuase Brucie practices 9 hours a day (with an 8 hour day at the Food Max) and Stu...um can identify a basketball. Well that doesn't matter...BRUCIE has to SUFFER. So they pass a rule that after say 20 points 2 of every 3 points will be given to another "impoverished player" as a result Brucie never gets that scholarship...but everyone else feels good. last edited: 6/25/07 7:58:40 AM” 7:53:08 AM 6/25/07 Clean coal??? “Here's your "clean coal!" ”11:03:41 AM 6/25/07 “Man, that would be easier to hike on than all those rocks and trees and crap.” 11:31:48 AM 6/25/07 “It took a pile of trash that high to make Brucie a NASCAR driver, Eh Haw?” 11:58:37 AM 6/25/07 “See the real problem for Sally wasn't of her making, it was those above her in the food chain who were making the real money. Frightened about letting too much lemonade into the market at once, the countries 'growing' the 'lemons' formed what was called a cartel, to control supplies of lemons and manipulate the price. We'll call that cartel 'OLEC'. Once the lemons were in the US the 'lemon squeezers' (who also had a stake in growing the lemons btw) deliberately threw away some of their lemon squeezers and refused to buy any more, decreasing supplies and again rising the price of lemons. Sally tried to go to another Lemon squeezing company, to see if they were offering lemon juice for less, but strangely they were all offering lemon juice at the same price. When Sally's customers, who as this stage were addicted to her lemonade, complained about the doubling of the price of her lemonade - she explained that the world market price for Lemons was high, and that the lemon sqeezers were low on capacity. The customers were angry that they were being 'squeezed' by the Lemon producing industry, so they went to their member of congress and asked them if the behaviour was fair and to find out if they were manipulating the so-called free market in Lemons. Then the lobbyists for a third group, we'll call them 'Big Lemon' got to work in Washington, handing out millions of dollars to the politicians to make sure that they got tax breaks and nothing changed. Strangely, Big Lemon - who were the most profitable companies in history, making unimaginable amounts every minute, could not explain how they made so much money. When the price of lemons went up they tried to blame the market price of the citrus, or the lack or lemon squeezing capacity, seemingly ignoring their own role in the lemon juice production process and their record profits. Big Lemon and it's fellow 'growers' big 'orange' and big 'lime', felt particularly worried when an industry in its infancy promised a never ending supply of all kinds of fruit juice, so they then really went to town to buy off every polticiian in Washington they could. Lucky, the President had made much of his money from Lemons, and had been elected in large part to the money given to his campaign fund by Big Lemon - some even referred to him as a Big Lemon - wanted to make sure the lemon money continued to flow to his party, and so nothing was ever done, and it was the lemon buyers at the end of the chain who continued to get squeezed.” 12:19:53 PM 6/25/07 “What are y'all doing to reduce your energy use? I just had a new very high efficiency heat pump put in and replaced most of my high wattage light bulbs with low energy fluorescent. Pulling your money where your mouth is?” 12:26:36 PM 6/25/07 Strip mines should be left as is! “declare them national 4 wheel drive preserves and ban the use of ATV's anywhere but a reserve!” 12:33:58 PM 6/25/07 “ clean coal jumbo shrimp rap music army intelligence? I once heard someone say that mountaintop removal was great because they could build more strip malls. Hmm.... "Strip Mall Mining"?” 12:50:04 PM 6/25/07 “So the first Sally and that dude Brucie were just fragments of someones immigration? Stovie, that's the way to solve it-do something. Super, idea.” 12:54:55 PM 6/25/07 “LOL..Thanks Y2...that was actually pretty darn good (and I mean it)....Of course you left out the sad saga of BIG FIG...it is just deplorable what happened to him.” 12:55:52 PM 6/25/07
