Saved (?) a Puppy This AM

“Speaking of wheelchairs, there are doggie wheel assemblies, where a dog that can't use his hind legs can be put into it, and run around like it's not problem. I've seen them bought for rescue dogs, and I see the item advertised. It must be a big problem.

A life is a life whether it be human or animal. Most people can help themselves, animals cannot. God didn't put dogs on this earth for them to be disposable.”

“Latest update: The li'l guy has a broken femur. Surgery would cost $1500. But surgery isn't necessary if someone can care for him by keeping him confined to a crate for several weeks (he'll just live with a slightly crooked leg). We are unable to do that. But the great news is that there is someone at the shelter who will very likely do that and wants to adopt him! If that falls through, the people at the shelter said it will be very easy to find someone who wants to adopt him, since most dogs they get are pit bulls which are perceived as being vicious. So it looks like a happy ending - 100 bucks well spent, we feel!”

“bowlder, yes it was money well spent. $1500, wow, their surgery cost no less than humans. Sometimes it seems to cost more. I can't believe it costs that much.

Be sure to mention the dachsund rescue place, if they need to place him. The purebred rescue places screen potential owners VERY carefully. The rescue places raise money for surgeries too, when the dog is in their care. For whatever reason, the a.s.p.c.a. doesn't contact purebred rescues, when a purebred comes in and might be euthanized.

I still can't believe that figure. Maybe they are doing some extensive surgery????? Well, at least the dog is in good hands, and someone will look after him. You can't do more than that for him.

The dog may be even going to a better home than he had.”

“Lipstick, the shelter assured us that he would be very easy to place because he is so cute, even if the adopters could not afford the surgery. He will most likely be just fine without it, once the broken bone heals. There is an outside chance that later in life (he's about 2 now) he would have to have the leg amputated, but the person at the shelter pointed out that many dogs live just fine, as, in her words, dogs are born with three legs and a spare.”

most people do not realize that vets use most of the same exact equipment and drugs as doctors use on people. not too mention training/education costs.
vet school costs the same amount as medical school, and takes the same amount of time.”

None of you may believe this but I own a mini dachshund. She's a great companion and apparently the only one at present who'll invite me to come hiking with her.

I had a schnauzer who got her leg broken by our big galoof of a black lab and I knew the costs I was looking at: so I set her leg, put a splint on it, wrapped it in cotton and vet wrap and carried her around for 3 weeks while it healed.

Oh, and Maple! We have plenty of tramps and homeless people here in Missoula, perhaps not as many as are in NY but I've gotten to know a few of them personally because I help down at the shelter. so Pfppppt!”

“It was the back leg joint. Pretty much a clean break. I just had to get the angle sort of right and let nature do the rest.

I wanted to be a vet myself, but didn't feel I was up to the surgery. Not that I can't deal with blood; I am just not steady enough with a knife. Oh, yes and the $70,000 price tag that went along w/ being a vet at the time was a little discouraging.”

“I think had I started when I was much (much) younger, I would have gone all the way to being a Vet.

Vet asst is a cheaper way to do it.”

“no doubt it would be. In retrospect I might have a hard time dealing with some of the "parents" of my patients though. So I'm probably better off in accounting.”
