I'm getting screwed.
A month ago, i bought a ford Escort off my cousin for 300 bucks. I wasnt driving it yet so i wasnt worried about the title being transfered yet. So i fixed it and now i have a job. I went to my cousin about getting the title transfered to my name and she said that the title was still in her stepmother's name... okay. Her stepmother wont sign the title over because my cousin still owes her 250 bucks from when she had bought it from her. Is this making any sense. She wont give me the title because my cousin owes her. Tell me what i can do to make them give it up.

Go back in time and have the title signed over at the same time you hand over the cash.

Nothing. Unless you get the cousin to pay the $250.

Sue your cousin for delivery of title.

However, the reason for titles is so you have ample notice of the true owner and all lienholders.

Good luck.

It seems the cousin is female, is this correct? If so, an ass-kicking is out of the question, I suppose.

If your cousin sold a car they did not own, that is fraud.

can you prove you paid $$ to cousin ? No, too bad.

Can you prove that the money you paid was for the car ? No, you may have a small claim for recovery of $300, but no car.

If yes to both of those you can put cousin in jail for fraud. Still does not get you the car because it belongs to stepmom, not cousin.

Even if stepmom got the $250, the $300 transaction between you and cousin has nothing to do with her or her car.

If you pay stepmom $250 get from her an assigment of the debt your cousin owes her. Then you have the car, the title and a right to sue your cousin for $250 in small claims court. Contact your cousin and give him/her three weeks to pay up. If he/she does not, SUE!!!

Unfortunately it will cost you more than $300 in time, effort etc... to sue.

If you think cousin is 'hot' enough for Bearmagnet?, rent her to Bearmagnet for $300.

Use $250 of the $300 to buy the car from stepmom (get the title this time).

Now you have the car and $50 for gas or beer, stepmom is happy, Bearmagnet is happy, and cousin ?? who knows she may like Bearmagnet, but anyway she got her $300.

Consider any money dealings with relatives as a gift.
You are still gonna be around these people for the rest of your life.
Love them or hate them.

well New Jersey is deservedly so.

WTF ??
OK for 13 yr old as long as partner is not a relative, not in a position of responsibilty over and not over 4 years older.

So a High School Senior can bang an eigth grader and that is OK.

At 16, the 4 year rule is gone, so their partner can be 50.

At 18, all bets are off.

New Jersey law at its finest. Sect 2C:14-2 Sexual assault.

That might be the "law" in DC, also. Wonder were I could find that out? What would happen if I picked up a 16 yr old maryland chick in DC and that was a no go in Maryland? Would I be safe in DC?

Hypothetically speaking, of course. Just curios, I swear.

Sorry i havent been able to watch my thread. Anyway, no my cousin is not hott, but she is a girl. I paid $300 in cash the day i picked up the car (which didnt run at the time). I trusted her when she said that i wouldnt have any problems when i wanted to transfer the title. I've made soo many phone calls today, i'm soo pissed...mostly b/c i went through the trouble to fix the car and i've paid my end, and i need to drive it to get to work now & I cant do that because she screwed up.
turbohikr87

The reason she owes 250 bucks is b/c she was paying for it when the car broke down. Her philosophy was that if the car was crap, she thought she shouldnt have to pay anymore. Bull$h1t!

turbo, you have to sue your cousin. Don't feel bad about it because she scammed you, in the worst way. Yes she did. She sold the car to you, a relative, instead of a stranger that would have kicked her @ss when they found the scam out, which you can still do. Send a girlfriend, wife or pay some other woman over off the street to do it. Only kidding about the kick @ss thing, well maybe.

So the step-mother I take it, is not a blood relative of yours. You are really in trouble now. She will have no sympathy for you. She may report her car as stolen. Your car will be taken, and you will be out the $300.00 too. Don't be surprised to find your car missing one day. The stepmother has every right to come and take it back. You have just fixed her car for her.

Is this some kind of stepmother-stepdaughter?

If you sue your cousin, you may not be able to get the money back for fixing the car, because it was your fault for fixing a car that wasn't yours, but you can always try.

If you do retain the Ford Escort, I wish you luck, because it is not a good car. Start saving your bucks for a better car, especially if you need it to get to work. Good luck.

I think I would go to your cousin's house, and tell her you want the $250. so you can personally give it to the stepmother, and get the title. This gal is going to be full of excuses. She may not even care if you sue her. It will just help her put off giving you the money until the court case. Try to get the cash from her now. Don't get into trouble doing it either.

I meant to say, is this a stepmother-stepdaughter scam? I just saw your post about her not wanting to pay for the car if it broke down. She is a scam artist. She was about to scam her own stepmother.

Tell your cousin to pawn something, sell herself, but come up with the money. Should I delete this paragraph? Was it bad what I just said? Yes, no, yes, no, quick LH, hit the submit button.

Happy to hear things worked out for you.

PS. Ford Escourt may not be as some others claim. When I married my wife she had an Escort Wagon and we kept it until about 120,000 miles!

turbo, my mistake, it wasn't the escort my husband bought that was a lemon. It was the Chevy Cavalier.

Chicagomark, at 120,000 mile, I'm just breaking in my Honda Accord, but that's not too bad with the Escort if it was problem free for those miles.

stanlee, okay, I should have said his cousin should "drain the vein", and you know the rest of them. Look what you made me say!

Chevy Cavalier..very similar to the Pontiac Sunbird. We had a 2 door hatchback Sunbird alot of years back.

It went over 250,000km (about 155,000 miles)....must've been one of those "Wednesday cars". It was still going strong when we sold it to one of our employees.
