Yes, well none of that answers why you would claim republicans want zero background checks when it is not true.

Nigal, the Republicans fought tooth and nail against the Brady bill being passed. They did so because guns are part of their trilogy. Guns, God and Gays. Opposing gun control is just a campaign slogan for most Republicans. I doubt whether most of them give a chit about your rights to buy one. The Democrats have lost their azz everytime they have campaigned on gun control in recent years. I doubt the chickenchit Democrats would have the courage to push legislation like the Brady bill today.

Being against the Brady Bill does not mean they are wholesale against background checks. The Brady Bill was full of stupid things that wouldn't even work.

Q. What's the difference between a democrat and a republican?

A. Which bumper they put the "RUN HILLARY RUN" bumper sticker on.

It takes a bit of doing to get on Bolton's level.... to Really appreciate his humor, but I think some of you are already there.

John Bolton at CPAC: The Benefits of Nuking Chicago
— By Jonathan Stein | Thu February 26, 2009 9:27 AM PST

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton believes the security of the United States is at dire risk under the Obama administration. And before a gathering of conservatives in Washington on Thursday morning, he suggested, as something of a joke, that President Barack Obama might learn a needed lesson if Chicago were destroyed by a nuclear bomb.

Appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the nation's largest annual conference of conservative activists, Bolton, one of the hardest hardliners of the George W. Bush administration, spoke at length about Obama's naivet้ and how various nations – Russia, North Korea, Iran – will be exploiting the new president. The most dramatic moment of his speech may have been when he cracked a joke about the nuking of Obama's hometown.

"The fact is on foreign policy I don't think President Obama thinks it's a priority," said Bolton. "He said during the campaign he thought Iran was a tiny threat. Tiny, tiny depending on how many nuclear weapons they are ultimately able to deliver on target. Its, uh, its tiny compared to the Soviet Union, but is the loss of one American city" – here Bolton shrugged his shoulders impishly – "pick one at random – Chicago – is that a tiny threat?"

Bolton wasn't the only one who thought this was funny. The room erupted in laughter and applause. Was this conservative catharsis, with rightwingers delightfully imagining the destruction of a city that represents Obama? Or perhaps they were venting vengeance with their laughter. (Bolton is no stranger to inflammatory remarks. He once infamously quipped, "There are 38 floors to the UN building in New York. If you lost 10 of them, it wouldn't make a bit of difference.")

It does require a diminution of one's basic humanity to really get into it ---- kinda like those Katrina jokes.

Remember when he came up before, sidestepping the confirmation process.... All these people who had worked with him said he was a jerk, an a-hole and a bully. Just The Very Person Bush should post to the UN, eh?

At least it was consistent.

That little personality profile could easily apply to Addington, Cheney and who knows how many others. I guess they had to be especially careful to be patient with George.

Do you find 4,000+ KIA in Iraq "acceptable"?
MarkO

nearly 2.5 million people die each year in the US.

45,000 Americans die each year from motor vehicle accidents.

70,000 a year die from non-motor vehicle accidents (that's falls, overdoses, drowning, burning, etc)

32,000 commit suicide

18,000 are murdered

4,000 over 6 years is 667 a year. Tuberculosis kills that many. as does meningitis. Bronchitis kills more. There are more deaths from giving birth than died each year in Iraq.

How do you know the numbers that died over there wouldn't have died over here in car accidents, drownings, murders, etc?

wk, is it any different to have a loved one die from a car accident than in a war. These people volunteered to fight in this war. The whiny anti-war types have no leg to stand on when they try to use the deaths as a reason to oppose the war. If you do, then you oppose people's right to choose. Sure, oppose the war because you feel its not fighting teh real war on terror, or that you don't think a ME country can develop a true democracy or for many other reasons. But you can't oppose the wars for the lives it costs because the people paying that cost made that choice. You don't get to make it for them.

Are you thick? One is an accident, the other, a deliberate action.

Yeah, they're pretty fuggin different.

Most people do not volunteer to die in a car accident. These people died so you would not have to. You make it sound so matter of fact.

I did not oppose the war, BTW. I believe it could have been handled differently, but then that probably makes me against it, and thus a silly libby.
Wounded Knee

so you are more dead in one or the other. Should the mother grieve more for one than the other. I think you are the most thick here. A kid drunk driving isn't a deliberate action. Kids racing faster than the speed limit isn't a deliberate action? Dude, the only difference is that you want to insert your politics into the way someone dies.

WK, every individual death is sad and grave matter. marko made their deaths as a whole an issue. I was just commenting on his insinuation that as a whole these deaths are any more significant than any other deaths that happens to americans. People are dying in much greater numbers than what are dying in Iraq, yet where is marko calling for stronger efforts to prevent murders, drownings, electrocutions, suicides, etc. To the left the deaths in Iraq are nothing more than a political matter.s

yes, the jury is still out. Complex issues aren't solved by throwing random money into a stimulus package that cost more in one bill than the entire war in Iraq has cost in 6 years. It takes time. It takes determination. It takes a strong will. It takes sacrifice. It takes lots of things that have been given to get to the point where we are now. A point no one thought was possible. Sure its precarious. But peace is a possibility that I actually think may be possible. Or I did. I have no faith that Obama and the democrats give a damn about a peace that may cost them votes to accomplish it.

Obama invited eighty-six mayors to the White House Friday. He warned them he will name them and shame them if they waste the bailout money, and the crowd of mayors laughed out loud. It's the biggest laugh anyone from Chicago has gotten since John Belushi told a class of incoming freshmen to study hard and drink moderately.
