Anyone familiar with lithium AA batterie s?

“I read some stuff about lithium AA batteries today. They weigh less and last up to 5 times longer, but they put out a high charge when they power up. It's not supposed to matter. They're marketed as the Energizer e2 Photo AA batteries.

Has anyone used these batteries? I'm thinking they would be a good choice for my GPS, but I sure don't want to fry its insides.”

“I use them in my camera, headlamp and GPS. Your device will see no difference in the power generated by the lithium AAs, except they'll last longer and will be a bit lighter.”

“I used them in one of my headlamps for over a year without any problems. They do weigh less, are lighter and last longer, but they also cost more. I've heard they're a little better in cold weather as well.”

“Are they completly lithium? I thought lithium AA's werent supposed to be out til the end of the year... maybe that was AAA's though??”

“It's the AAA's I can't find. I buy the AA's at Wal-Mart.”

“My memory sucks, but I think the original lithiums were AA size, but 2.2 volt per cell. There was an incompatability issue, but I can't remember what it was.

The current models are 1.5v and half the weight. The real advantage is that they last in the cold! Akaline batteries die when it gets near freezing. In the summer I would not pay the extra cost for the weight.”

“Panasonic already includes them in their new camera packages. we tried them a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think they performed that different from regular conventional batteries. They did run empty fairly quick. lithium batteries are still the way to go.
Lithium are super light, and I only had to change my batteries twice during the whole JMT trip. [and I took a lot of pictures]”

The advantage of lithium is not just weight and endurance, but also shelf life (unlimited in practical terms), cold weather performance (important for us Canucks) and full power until the end of their life (no fading).

The problem is that they can overpower and blow out some systems.

This might only be the rechargeable ones and I'd love to get some beta on that.”

“i have been doing this for a while now. you have to take them out of your checked baggage and put then in your carry on. since on business travel i very seldom if ever check bags i don't encounter this often. this last week when i was packed for a BP trip i had to check bags (tsa doesn't approve of an ice axe and crampons in carry on) i remembered and moved all the lithiums into my carry on. it's a minor inconvenience... just one more thing to remember. i am told if you don't do this that they WILL find them. don't know if this is true.”
