Here goes nothing
Okay, this is the first time I've tried planning a trip.

The plan is to go to Morgan-Monroe State Forest this weekend, June 18-20. Plan to arrive late Friday afternoon/early evening.

More details to follow.

man, i can get to NC or TN by early morning (like 2 am or 3 am) Sat/fri night, but IN is just a little out of reach. I'm off work the following week or I'd take a day off and start driving early.

Have fun!

Ruby--
I'd love to go to MMSF (and meet a fellow ex MSU student!!) but I'll be in the 49th state then. :-)
Hope you have a great time.

I'll be there. And as for the links, you did them right, but Matt hasn't enabled BBCodes on the Trip pages yet. So in TT they would work, on the trip pages they don't.

Thanks, Dub. So I'm not whacked after all.

I'm thinking we'll do the Low Gap Trail Loop, which is 10 miles. Maybe we can add a little mileage to that. Or not. If you check out the links, it seems like a decent hike.

Ruby

I'll check it out. Do you want to start hiking on Friday? If so then we'll add a few miles. If not, 10 is good for Sat/Sun. I'll research the trail later tonight as well as some new food ideas. We're gonna eat GOOD.

Are you cooking for me? Then I'll bring the, um, refreshments.
Ruby

6/14/04

I might ;-) I'll let you know. What kind of cookset do you have? My Ti pot/pan tends to scorch food...but if I have an Al set to use I might come up with a couple recipes. But be warned, this would be my first attempt at gourmet backcountry cooking. I tend to prefer the boil in a bag myself, but after last weekend with Prosecutor, I gotta change my backcountry eating habits.

I wish I could make this trip Vic. I am so looking forward to the month of June ending, then I will be free again (from work that is) I have been working 65 to 70 hour weeks sine the month started due to the close of our fiscal year on the 30th. Lots of overtime means some new gear purchaces in the near future.

Well dang, shat and fooy! I've wanted to hike with the Dubster for a while and would love to meet you Ruby but I have to put up the pool this weekend and I'm off for a four day Red River trip next weekend so I can't swing back to back trips. I don't like big groups and this looks like a small one so I'm pissed I can't make it. :(

Low gap trail
I've hiked that trail a couple of times. Easy hike for the weekend. There is also a compass course set up in the forest for you to brush up on your orienteering. Looks like rain for the weekend. If it was not father's day weekend, I'd get out and go backpacking with everyone.

Great...rain. Like we haven't had enough of that here in Indiana.

Oh, well. Adds to the challenge I suppose. I picked up a bunch of the alleged sylnylon from Wal-Mart. Perhaps I'll make a tarp or two. Any suggestions on sizes?
Ruby
7:02:59 PM
6/15/04

I looked for the silnylon at Wal-Mart and coldn't find it. A tarp for a hangout area would be great! I'm trying to decide if I want to brng my hammock or my tent since it's gonna be raining...hmmmm.
Dub

What size? I've been searching past threads. I'm thinking just a rectangle. 5 x 8? Bigger? I have enough fabric, maybe 8 yards or so.
Ruby
7:18:11 PM
6/15/04

5x8 isn't that big. 10x8 would probably be a lot better

One of the guys I've met from the Ohio Backpacking board might be coming along. And one of the girls I know from school might also come.

The great recruiter, Dub.

sloppyjoe56

6/15/04

Joe, Nope. I'll try to have that tarp so we can hang out underneath it. On the tarp, I will just use all the fabric I have and make it as big as possible. Might be a challenge to get a good fire going. But you never know. Perhaps it won't rain after all.

Yay, Dub!!! Bring 'em along! I invited BandCamp, but I haven't heard from her at all. Do you ever?
Ruby

Ruby

I plan on it! What, you think I'd cook something like that and then show it off to you guys while you're eating your Mountain House meals? ...

That's a good idea! J/k. Of course I plan on sharing it. Although, to do it right we'll need a campfire.

Forecast looks good so far. Earlier today, I heard they were going to average an inch of rain per hour this morning. Yikes! That will be done by the time we get there hopefully.

Joe, I should know later tonight about driving plans. I'm thinking we could actually meet everyone at the trailhead sometime on Saturday morning, say 11 a.m. So then we'd hike 5 or 6 miles on Saturday and then hike out the rest of the loop on Sunday morning. What do you think? If we do that, we can either go down on Friday and sort of car camp or just go down on Saturday morning. What are your thoughts?
Ruby
9:06:01 PM

I thought we where going down Friday morning and hitting the trails in the afternoon hiking through the muck. When is Dub and friends showing up? Ok i'm cornfused .

9:13:46 PM
6/16/04

Sorry for the confusion, Joe. I don't know what time Dub and Co. are arriving. Hopefully he'll jump in here at some point tonight. I might end up driving myself down because of some other stops I want to make in the area. But then again, I might not have the chance to do those either. I should know by tomorrow. When all is said and done, if I can get enough work done tomorrow and if I don't have any deps scheduled for Friday, I would not be opposed to going down on Friday morning. I'd love to get more hiking in. How about I call you tomorrow morning?
Ruby

I'm working days if you want call tomorrow night say after 7:30 I got this all cornfused. So give me a call and we will take it from there.

Wish I could join in on this one being soooo close, but I already had other commitments for this weekend.

Did you know there is a shelter on the Tecumseh Trail that is 8.8 miles from the Backcounty Parking Lot/Trailhead on Low Gap Road? The Techumseh Trail and Low Gap Trail coincide for about 2.5-3 miles going east and north from that point . . . before splitting up. The shelter is relatively unknown to most people. There is a water source 1/4 mile south of the shelter and one about 1 mile north of the shelter. Let me know if you need more info about this.

I'll be there Friday around 8pm with one friend unless another joins. I'd like to car camp Friday night and then backpack Sat/Sun, take it easy, explore.

Rock on! I'm going to go buy the stuff needed to make the cobblers tomorrow. Mmmm.

Hello, I'm new to the board here but I have met Dub for a dayhike. I'm the friend he's going to be bringing along this weekend. Just thought I would drop in....

Anyway, I go by Jeromie (Jeremy). Not much for nicknames since I realized I have a hard enough time keeping after one personality : )

Peace
