Company: Backpacker Magazine
Position: Staff Writer
Location: Pennsylvania
Job Status: Full-time
Salary: Not Specified
Ad Expires: July 13, 2004
Job ID: 409118

Description:
Rodale Inc. is seeking a razor-sharp staff writer for its Backpacker Magazine's Emmaus, Pennsylvania office. The ideal candidate will have a nose for inventive story ideas, solid reporting skills, a commitment to genuinely helpful service journalism, and a crisp, distinctive literary voice that captures the spirit of adventure. Primary responsibility will be to help conceive and write much of our expansive new front-of-the book section, but the right person will have ample opportunity to contribute throughout the book.
The ideal candidate will:

Have a strong interest in matters relating to the outdoors, hiking, health and fitness, nature and the environment, and travel—as well as be fluent in up-to-the-minute cultural trends
Be nimble at conceiving and finessing ideas, and equally dogged at reporting them
Work well with a dynamic team of editors and art staff
Have clips to demonstrate talents ranging from short, attitudinal pieces to successful service journalism to longer, more lyrical stories
Dependable when tight deadlines and higher workloads occur

Sounds to me like their writers are quiting and they need replacements. A lot of readers expressed disatisfaction with their last issue. Occasionally their stories are cut and paste from some of the threads on the other side.

Maybe They Should Put Attractive People OnTheCover
It HAS to be tough to be in the writer's shoes. Trails don't change and hiking doesn't change, only gear changes (becomes upgraded).

All they can really do is re-hash old articles or "re-invent the wheel" so to speak. Unfortunately, it's a fact that has to be accepted by both the writers AND the readers.

The trails don't change (much) and new trails aren't being built with any frequency, so what changes?

Like Buddur says, the equipment (then they're accused of just being shills for the gear companies), OR the drafting, enforcement and interpretation of environmental law... then the right-wingers pee in their pampers and accuse executives at Rodale of being socialists, LOL

Now watch carefully ---

Tilt, the executives at Rodale are dyed in the wool profit motive capitalist who spout extreme left causes because that appeals to their rank and file readers. Those executives also give favorable ratings to the products of their advertisers. This is neither good nor bad. Making money this way is the American way.

Prosecutor, et al: I have my disagreements with your take on Backpacker Magazine. It is a very informative publication that serves it's purpose well to its target audiences. Perhaps what a small segment of the backpacking community needs is another magazine, but for those within its readership ranks -- I am not sure they would agree with you that it is disappointing.

I have been long amazed at some of the incredible photography, as they often portray locations out of the reach of most blue collar Americans. I for one cannot, and will not ever be able to afford some of the trips they write about, but its fun to see the scenery and read about some of the places they get to go.

Why don't you apply lizs? Might as well, they steal all of the good ideas from here anyway.

Ya know, Pathie, I am just back from a trip -- and I did not find an "oh I'm happy to be home" feeling as I got here. More like discontent.

Maybe. Not that it would likely get me anywhere. :-)

Ther's some real nice trails near Emmaus, lizs. The Appalachian Trail passes just north of there and there are tons of State Game Lands all around.

PA is a nice place to hike too! Do it Lizs! Do it!

Moohahaha! Now when she gets the job we'll be able to shape Backpacker! More weekend Destination articles, less googly moogly about sex on the trail!

If you'll notice, I didn't say they were gear shills or over-the-edge environmentalists, I said that's what they're often accused of being. Personally, I think the people who make these accusations just like to carp.

But if the readers think the Chinese wall between ad sales and gear testing isn't functining properly, then perhaps they should encourage Consumer Reports to evaluate gear.
