Cabot, Waumbek, East Peak Osceola “Mad -- Am headed to NH for a few days of hiking. I have a specific agenda to bang out some more peaks towards the 48 4000s. Iam going to do East Peak first, then hike up to Lonesome Lake and spend the night. From there I will do Cannon and the Kinsmans, hike out and spend the night up in Berlin, postioned to do Cabot and/or Waumbek the 3rd day. Question: I have climbed Osceola, but NOT East Peak. Do you have an opinion about whether I should go up and over O. and down the chimney over to E.O. and back. Or just up E.O. from Greeley Ponds? Considering I will be driving from MA in the morning, and then trying to make dinner at the Lonesome Lake hut at 6:00pm, perhaps just doing E.O. from theKanc makes more sense? Question: What is the deal with the closed trailheads for Cabot. Does the homeowner flatten your tires or something??? Have you done it from the other side, up Bunnel Notch trail? Any suggestions?? Are these easy mountains??? That is: I did Techcumseh up and down in 2-3 hours and could have done another mountain that day. These trails into Waumbek (Starr King Tr) and Cabot (via Bunnell Notch) amke for 8 mile round trips. Are these cruiser trails or rough and steep?? Any input, as always, is appreciated! PS: If you have lodging, dinner and early morning diner breakfast suggestions in the Berlin area I would also be greatful!” 11:16:00 AM 6/15/04 “It's definitely quicker to get to the east peak from the Kanc. and Greeley. It's even quicker to go that way if you want both the East and the Main peak. I loved hanging out on the main peak in good weather (done that twice, once in summer and once in winter). Waumbek and Cabot are two of the six NH 4Ks that I haven't done, so I can't offer my own advice, but Mohamed Elozy's seems useful: http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/northern.html. As for eating, check out this survey: [url]http://appalachia.outdoors.org/bbs/messageview.cfm?catid=4&threadid=5486&highlight_key=y&keyword1=food[/ulr] the one's listed for Gorham are close to Berlin. I stayed at "the Barn," a hiker Hostel in Gorham - they will do shuttles - and was very happy with it. Others have been happy with Hikers' Paradise in Gorham which has a motel as well as a hostel and does shuttling.” 12:06:28 PM 6/15/04 “The dispute with the landowner of the Cabot Trail has been somewhat resolved. I have seen a few trip reports from people who have used the trail without being shot at or having him release his dogs on them. I did Cabot by taking the Unknown Pond Trail and then coming out the Bunnell Notch Trail. I like that route because you got to go over the Horn and the Bulge, which offer great views of the backside of the Presidentials. I haven’t hiked the Mt. Cabot Trail to Mt. Cabot so I cannot speak to its difficulty. I did do Mt. Waumbek from the Starr King Trail and found it to be a nice easy trail. I too would come in from the Kanc to do East Osceola and Osceola, especially if you need to go to Lonesome Lake for supper. If you do come in from the Kanc, it isn’t all that difficult to continue on to Osceola from E.O. I personally like to climb the “Chimney” between the two peaks. All of the mountains you have planned are easy hikes. Aside from the distant of the Mt. Cabot loop, the trail is easy and relatively flat. I cannot speak about the food in Berlin, but I would check out Pedxing’s link.” 12:45:47 PM 6/15/04 “Oops, silly typo: http://appalachia.outdoors.org/bbs/messageview.cfm?catid=4&threadid=5486&highlight_key=y&keyword1=food” 12:49:06 PM 6/15/04 “Also, check out the trail condition reports at http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/ - you can just use "find" to get the reports on Cabot (or whatever mountain you want).” 1:10:52 PM 6/15/04 “THanks guys. You have confirmed my instinct really East O from the Kanc. I will do that . . .if it is early I can get Oscelo again for fun. I haven't done the Kinsmans or Cannon, or really been on that side of RT 93much, so I looking forward to that. Thanks for the Ellozy links . .I always forget about them.” 2:00:49 PM 6/15/04 “Agreed on East peak from the Kanc Waumbek was a breeze a few weeks ago even though it started raining half way up and all the way down. I would put it in the same dificulty as Hale or Techcumseh, maybe less, it's been a while since I did those. I'm going to try for Cabot on the 24th-27th if anyone is interested. I put it off on my last trip because I would not have been back until late and was concerned about getting locked in at the fish hatchery and unknown situations on the Cabot TH.” 3:38:02 PM 6/15/04
