Maine is one of the states where I'd consider going to teach after I'm done here in Maryland.

That's a great change for you. All this stuff about freezing is a bunch of hoooey. Stay active, get a good woman....life will be good.

Buddur is right about watching out for moose. A friend of mine hit one at night a couple of weeks ago. The A pillar on his new Avalanche ended up decapitating the moose and it wound up in his lap. Both he and his wife are OK and lucky to be alive. They didn't total the truck, as the damage was only $17,000. Yikes!

He said he was going the speed limit and it was just standing there in the middle of the highway. He didn't have time to slam on the brakes, but just swerved a little. He figures the swerve saved them both.

pictures

Last year, a deer came out from the side of the road when I was driving. I only had time to swerve and it's head ended up denting the rear passenger side door. I bet that deer had a headache for quite awhile. I tend to drive a little slower at night and am more aware of the animals about at night. It seems like every week you can see where someone has hit a deer, moose or bear on the highway around here.

I love your positive outlook, Jo, and I totally agree. :-)

Wow, those pics are insane, ski. Definitely food for thought.

Well, congrats Artex. Glad to hear it. The hogs in the souf are glad to hear it. You can root for the Portland Sea Dogs. You can eat cheap lobster. You can do overnighters on Katahdin.

I think I'm starting to hate you! (j/k, Dude)

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, moose jerky!

wow ski, your friend was lucky!

One reason the moose hunt received so much support when it started was the number of deaths caused by moose-car accidents.
I also read somewhere that the most deadly animal is the moose, but that is due to highway accidents.

Maybe I missed that info?

So, Artex, I forgot to ask: Will you be searching out a new "Hills of Death" running route? Those freeway overpasses probably just aren't cuttin' it....

really? around here, usually the deer is the one that dies in an accident with a car. If you hit a moose, you're lucky to survive.

Maine is nothing but hills, hills, and more hills, that's why the rest of you are "flatlanders," LOL...

Moose are deadly for the same reason as horses - you run into their legs and the body comes throught he windscreen.

Deer make an unholy mess of a car, though.

Artex, we gotta do Katahdin.

twigeater - I think it's more someone swerves to miss the deer and ends up wrapping their car around a tree. And just whom are you calling a flatlander? Here in the Adirondacks we only have two directions you can travel, up and down.

It's just a general term zac...but more often than not it applies...especially to those who come here on bike tours.

I was there once (the Adirondacks) and it is beautiful! I'd never seen a sea of mountains like I did from the top of Mt Marcy - awesome!

Nothing even resembling a hill in NH. ;-) No wonder I get such crappy mileage. I'm always travelling up and down hills.

I have yet to see a moose and I've been to Maine at least 5 times. Dang moose crossing signs are everywhere too...lies, all lies, I say!

Ahhhhhh, I've got one on Twigeater. I've seen real puffins off Easter Egg Rock on the standard touron boat tour. What a hoot they are, too. Comical little critters they are, dressed up in tuxedos and clown noses.

Yeah, where's the moose head?

The only flat part of Maryland is the coastal plain and I don't live there.....so bite me!

Just who is this Bobo character?

I hope to see a Buddha Bear on some future hike.
It seems he keeps bailin' out and I wonder if he is for real.

I'm lucky. I've seen a total of 3 live moose near the house. I've seen tracks right behind and right in front of the house. I've also seen lots of moose meat in the road or on the shoulder of the road.

Oh, never mind - it would be rude and Canucks are never that.

BTW, done where Lumberzac lives there are left cows and right cows - legs on the left or on the right are longer depending on which side of the mountain they graze. Honest (Canucks never lie.).

Yep, I will definitely be devising a new Hills of Death running route. There are also apparently quite a few fantastic cross-country skiing areas very close to where I'll be living. It'll be fun to put on the headlamp and get in a few miles after work during the winters.

Congratulations!! on your move, Artex, you finally are getting to Maine. When you headed to Florida I didn't expect it to happen after all.

I haven't been on this board much lately so I missed the whole "secret thing" discussion and the relationship to yam. It sounds like you are having an exceptional year. I wish you continued good luck. Although I am glad that you will be back up north, I am dreading the effects of your oonga boongaing again.

Thanks LyndyS. It took me a while, but when I have something in my sights, I never give up (as Yam will atest).

I'll be very glad to back up in the NE again. Can't help the oonga boongas though. Somebody has to fight global warming, you know.
