Hikes in the Sawtooth National Forest
Does anyone have any suggestions for day hikes(5 to 10 miles) in the Sawtooth National Forest around Standly,Idaho? I am visiting there in August for three days. I've not found that much info on hikes there. Any suggestions?

First get a map of the SNRA (Sawtooth National Recreation Area). Search the web.

Take the Redfish Like shuttle boat ($5 each way) to the Redfish inlet transfer camp. From there you could visit Alpine Lake or Cramer Lakes or Saddleback Lake.

Sawtooth Lake is in that range as is Hell Roaring Lake. There are some nice place on the east side in the White Clouds around Forth of July Lake too (not “wilderness”). The Sawtooth Valley side of the Sawtooth Wilderness is crowded by Idaho standards. Your would find more solitude on the west side going in from Grandjean or the Atlanta area. Your could also look north of Stanley in the Frank (Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness). Stanley is the center of the universe for wilderness seekers in the USA contiguous states.

What mtn gal said, double. Stanley is beautiful, and there is a lifetime of great places to visit around there. Hiking to Sawtooth lake is a good one, and although popular by Idaho standards, I've always found good campsites at the inlet of the lake. The view of Mt. Regan from the lake is classic, and is in every Idaho calendar, and photo book.

On my photos page is a photo of Goat Lake, which is not far from Sawtooth lake.

Another great one is to hike in to 4th of July Lk and Washington Lk. That is an easy hike, and you start pretty high. Its actually across the valley from teh Sawtooths, in a range called the White Clouds.

Thanks for the info. I've only been to the area once. I knew there had to be someone with experience in this area that could give me some tips. Thanks!
