Glacier NP in September

“Anybody ever been there during that time frame? Looking for advice on taking a trip there with my family then.”

“Oops, better make that October, that's when our fall break is.”

“If it's October then you're probably well after Aspen season and could face significant snow. I haven't been, but from reading up on the Tetons that what you'd face. I was hoping for an August 05 Tetons hiking trip, but the timing won't work. The reasons I mentioned are why I'm hesitant to push it back. You can get some decent snow in Sept too.”

“Hmm, okay I guess I should scratch this idea then...”

“I downloaded a trail map of the Tetons along with some other info and it gave the average high/low and snowfall for each month of the year. Also, weather.com gives average hi/low for every day of the year at different locations. Another thing to consider is that while they get way much sun in the summer, up north, they get alot less during winter. You'll be going during the transition. check sunrisesunset.com for Kalispell, MT to make sure you've got enough light.

“The daylight should be OK in October--the snow is hit and miss. It could dump in August and be nice in October. But most likely there will be some snow in October.

“I was in Glacier in late July '01. I can't help with September or October planning, but whenever you go, watch out for grizz... :)”

“Most of Glacier closes down in October - some parts on the first and some on the 15th. The towns around will be mostly closed down and empty. You may have snow and cold temps and some of the trails are likely to be closed because of bear activity. But it will be beautiful.”

“You could just stay a few miles away in Whitefish--that's a fun little town and there are plenty of places open at that time. Also it's a good time to view the eagles feeding along Apgar creek near West Glacier. They aren't as plentiful as they used to be but they still come up abd feed on Kokanee salmon.”

“What time in October? If it's early then how about New England instead. You could tie leaf season into real life history for the kids.”

“I think it's the second full week in October, but I could be wrong about that.

We may just do Florida instead. I'm so lame.”

The aspen in Colorado may still be around then.

What about New Mexico, San Antonio, Williamsburg, Black Hills, or Grand Canyon.”

“I am looking at the Grand Canyon too. 1600 miles though.”

“Colonial Williamsburg might be a good idea as well.”

“I have a client that just got back from there. He loved it.”

“Williamsburg that is. You could tie into Charlottesville as a side trip and see Monticello and UV.”

“Of course I have yet to discuss this with my wife. It's altogether possible that she'll look at me and say "We're going <insert place I never heard of here> that week. Don't you remember? I told you while you were watching the ballgame the other day."”

My fav is when I've mentioned a hiking trip about 5x over a month or two and then the 6th time I mention it is during lunch and I get the blank stare. What do you mean you're hiking that weekend. You never told me.......”

“We have a calendar for that. I mark the calendar the weekends I want to go hiking. Which reminds me...”

“Bit, I was there in mid-late September a couple years ago. It was absolutely beautiful and the weather was great. However by my last day there a wicked snowstorm was already heading in. I booked down the the last mountain to stay in front of the nasty weather. By October you'd really be pushing it.”

“Yah I'm thinking it won't be Glacier. Besides I don't think I can afford the plane fare for my whole family.”

I have long time friend who could possibly get you, wife and 2 kids in free with "world passes" for 3 days....If he still is there come then.... he has been working there 15 years now and has hooked up alot of family and friends...It is part of his union bennies...”
