“New Study Shows Law Schools Hiring Far More Liberal Professors Than Conservatives

[portrait] In light of how smooth (and, let’s be honest, boring) Elena Kagen’s confirmation hearings were, it’s really too bad that this new study by University of California, Berkeley, School of Law didn’t come out sooner. In the new study, Berkeley Ph.D student Douglas Spencer (pictured) and research partner James Phillips conclude that law schools “hire more openly liberal professors than they do openly conservative ones.”

While previous studies have analyzed the gender and ethnic makeup of law school professor, this study breaks new ground in analyzing the political leanings of recently hired professors. The study looks at factors such as work experience, publications, and even Facebook profiles for a sample of 149 professors hired in the past five years. Even though the researchers were unable to clearly identify the political leanings of 60% of the professors, “the number of hires who were easily identified as libereal far outpaced those who were very clearly conservative.”

The study acknowledges that this ratio could simply mean conservative professors are more discreet about their ideology, and that, without information about rejected candidates, it’s difficult to judge what kind of role political leanings play in landing a job as a professor.

In an age when Supreme Court nominees routinely runs the gauntlet of accusations of judicial activism, it’s hard not to extrapolate from one study like this. But it is still interesting to find law professors of one particular political leaning being more open than professors on the opposite side of the political spectrum, and it does make you wonder if that indicates any rising trend in the legal community.”

As a student with liberal social viewpoints and a middle-of-the-road economic philosophy, I didn’t expect to feel out of place at the University. The liberal media, meanwhile, ignored the story even though the allegations were explosive. Had the Obama team, in concert with the NAACP, quashed the case because of an ideological aversion to filing cases against minorities? Did the head of Obama�s Civil Rights division provide misleading testimony under oath when he said he had never heard of such a sentiment? Senior executives, on-air personalities, producers, reporters, editors, writers and other self-identifying employees of ABC, CBS and NBC contributed more than $1 million to Democratic candidates and campaign committees in 2008, according to an analysis by The Examiner of data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

The Democratic total of $1,020,816 was given by 1,160 employees of the three major broadcast television networks, with an average contribution of $880.

By contrast, only 193 of the employees contributed to Republican candidates and campaign committees, for a total of $142,863. The average Republican contribution was $744.

Disclosure of the heavily Democratic contributions by influential employees of the three major broadcast networks follows on the heels of controversy last week when it was learned that media baron Rupert Murdoch�s News Corp. contributed $1 million to the Republican Governors Association.

The News Corp. donation prompted Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association and son of former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, to demand in a letter to Fox News chairman Roger Ailes that the cable news outlet include a disclaimer in its coverage of gubernatorial campaigns. Fox News is owned by News Corp., which also owns The Wall Street Journal

Lower-income Americans and those with less education are generally more likely to trust the media than are those with higher incomes and more education. A subgroup analysis of these data suggests that three demographic groups key to advertisers -- adults aged 18 to 29, Americans making at least $75,000 per year, and college graduates -- lost more trust in the media in the past year than other groups, but the sample sizes in this survey are too small to say so definitively

CBS Interviews Assaulted MoveOn Protestor, Never Covered Man Who Had Finger Bitten Off at 2009 MoveOn Event

On Wednesday's CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith interviewed MoveOn.org protestor Lauran Valle, who was stepped on during a protest outside of the Kentucky senate debate on Monday: "Less than a week before election day, the races are heating up, some even turn ugly. We'll speak exclusively with a woman who was stomped on the head during a campaign melee."

While CBS was eager to talk to Ms. Valle, in September 2009 the network failed to give any coverage to a man having his finger bitten off by a MoveOn.org supporter at a California ObamaCare rally. At the September 2 event, 65-year-old William Rice, an ObamaCare opponent, got into an altercation with an unidentified MoveOn protestor, who proceeded to bite off the tip of Rice's left pinky finger. Not only did CBS not interview Rice about the violent attack, but it offered no mention of the incident at all.

In addition, on Wednesday, Smith did not report the fact that a Rand Paul supporter was assaulted by a Jack Conway supporter at the very same debate rally on Monday. As Emily Maxwell reported on KYPost.com, "...a Conway supporter stepped on the foot of a female Rand supporter, who recently had foot surgery, according to police. The woman was wearing a surgical boot, but after the injury, her incision was cut open." NewsBusters' Matthew Balan highlighted the same omission during CNN Tuesday coverage of the event.
