FOR nearly two weeks, The New York Times has been defending a political advertisement that critics say was an unfair shot at the American commander in Iraq.

But I think the ad violated The Times’s own written standards, and the paper now says that the advertiser got a price break it was not entitled to.

After two weeks of denials, the New York Times acknowledged that it should not have given a discount to MoveOn.org for a full-page advertisement assailing Gen. David H. Petraeus.

The liberal advocacy group should have paid $142,000 for the ad calling the U.S. commander in Iraq "General Betray Us," not $65,000, the paper's public editor wrote yesterday.

Clark Hoyt said in his column that MoveOn was not entitled to the cheaper "standby" rate for advertising that can run any time over the following week because the Times did promise that the ad would run Sept. 10, the day Petraeus began his congressional testimony. "We made a mistake," Times spokeswoman Catherine Mathis was quoted as saying.”

It's been interesting to follow the non-story about the discount MoveOn got for the now legendary Betreaus ad. Anytime you'd like to do the same, all you have to do is set up a Google News Alert and you get an email when stories matching your search terms appear.

This is how it went:

Some rightwing blogs picked up the story that MoveOn had gotten a discount. The NY Post printed a one-sided smear story. American Spectator repeated it. Fox reprinted in on their website. The Times debunked it. Advertising Age completely debunked it. [MoveOn got the standard discount ANY advocacy group, including VoteForRudy, would get for that category of ad]

She also said the department does not disclose the rates it charges for individual advertisements. As NewsBusters reported Sunday, the leftwing organization responsible for the recent smear campaigns against Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly, Media Matters, has direct ties to the Clintons.

To be sure, folks on the left, and in the media that support them, will either deny this connection, or ignore it.

In the end, that's going to be hard to do, for on August 4, while speaking at the YearlyKos convention in Chicago, the junior senator from New York boasted of "institutions that I helped to start and support like Media Matters and Center for American Progress."

Our friend Mike Church has been kind enough to provide the following audio of this segment of her speech that day (partial transcript to follow). Those interested can also view the video available here (relevant section at 2:20):

Sounds like the junior senator confirmed my contention from Sunday: "Hillary and her backers have created an advocacy network whose expressed goal is to take down all of her critics in the media.

Former ABC News anchor Carole Simpson suggested she endorsed Hillary Clinton for President of the United States last month because she couldn't think of anything else to say when the Democratic candidate called on her at a political event. "I kept trying to get her attention," Simpson told the Boston Globe's Peter Schworm in a Monday article. "When I did, I realized I didn't have anything to say. I felt like a deer in headlights." So rather than tolerate a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, Simpson told Clinton: "I want to tell you tonight, because I happen to be here with my students, that I endorse you for President of the United States."

Schworm contacted several media experts for comment, including Simpson's former ABC News colleague Bob Zelnick and the Media Research Center Vice President Brent Baker. Both said that Simpson's endorsement of the liberal Clinton was less than a complete surprise. "People had always assumed she was a liberal when she was at ABC, but this confirms it," said Baker.

"Those familiar with her work probably had very little doubt she stood on the liberal side of the field," Zelnick agreed.”
