i am going to be using a tarp (id silshelter) on the south-north trip next month and wonder what is going to be my best bet for mosquito protection at night....will i need a full bug bivy or just a head net, or what?? what do you sierra stompers use to keep them little rascals off'n ya??

I use a MSR Bug Hut to keep 'em off me in the midwest. Its a full-length bug bivy. I've never tried a headnet and sleeping bag combination, because I like to read before sleeping. My arms would get chewed up with just a headnet.

The MSR Bug Bivy is extremely light and effective. That's what I use. It keeps out bugs while affectively allowing your farts to escape into the atmosphere and kill any fleeing skeeterz.

LOL at Buck!

Has anyone found a non toxic bug repellent? I'm covered in bites from this last weekend. The Deet is so nasty...

pixie: I led some newbies for a backpacking trip this past weekend. Like you, I dislike Deet, but I use it anyway. I tried their eucalyptus spray and found it fairly effective.

Buck: I guess that explains why the skeeters avoid my Bug Hut.

I’ve been using Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent as of late and it works well on black flies and mosquitoes, but not well on deer and horse flies.

Gonzo, Birch and I tried a tarp/headnet combo on Isle Royale last year. For it to be effective we had to wear visored caps to keep the headnet from resting on our skin (and the bugs from biting through). Maybe go a different route if you want to sleep well.

i use 100% deet, and it works well on myself. after a good sweat the stuff runs into my eyes and makes me halfway blind. I sure won't bite anyone.

Now I use deet on my body, but birds bees or however you call that stuff on my face. Anything natural on my face I guess. (if I don't forget it at home)

I was checking out that Ultrathon stuff... I think it's just DEET in a different suspension or something to make it last longer.

And don't forget the locking carabiners.
