Seems just like yesterday they launched that thing. ;)” 10:49:36 AM 6/24/04 “There was a huge flap over the launching of a nuclear power source as I recall....” 11:04:12 AM 6/24/04 “cool links, Tilt, thanks for the info!” 11:08:16 AM 6/24/04 “uh.... That should've been PM not AM... But be on the lookout for nifty Saturn images appearing Thurday AM on various news outlets.” 11:13:21 AM 6/24/04 “ ”11:25:59 AM 6/24/04 “That was supposed to be a picture of HAL.... sorry.” 11:26:43 AM 6/24/04 “Take me to your leader.” 12:56:06 PM 6/24/04 “'palantír' dot net.... I'm a big fan. His 12th birthday would have been this past January. He's a Capricorn, I believe, <G>” 3:30:53 PM 6/24/04 “Cassini, like nearly all other Deep Space probes, uses RTG (Radio-Thermal Generators) for their power source, because that far out, you'd need solar panels the size of football fields to get the necessary power. RTG's work using a radioactive heat source (decaying plutonium usually) and a thermocouple. A thermocouple has the property of producing a current when one end is heated. They're usually used to measure temperature, but obviously can also be used to generate electricity. The use of RTG's in Cassini was protested by a large group of Luddites who are afraid of anything radioactive, nevermind that they took a larger risk of getting cancer by standing outside and protesting than they have of getting cancer as a result of an accidental release of Pu from an RTG.” 4:07:29 PM 6/24/04 4:15:49 PM 6/24/04 2:24:20 PM 6/28/04 “That's not going to be a porn site is it? What with all the "insertion" and "Phoebe" talk...” 2:37:35 PM 6/28/04 “Are you a homophoebe?” 2:39:17 PM 6/28/04 “lol...” 2:42:57 PM 6/28/04 2:52:36 PM 6/28/04 bump “Gee, I thought Phoebe was perhaps a girl with whom I might be able to get a date.” 3:37:26 PM 6/28/04 “I think I'll be quiet now, and try not to get into any more trouble.” 3:44:56 PM 6/28/04 “Tilt- Amazing stuff” 8:35:10 PM 6/28/04 “And it's just beginning --- <GRIN>” 8:42:44 PM 6/28/04
