What to wear in Yosemite?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 23 of 23 messages posted.
What to wear what to wear “I will be there in Aug. I have a rain shell. Do I need a light fleece? Or will a long sleeve pull over do? Can I wear insulated underwear under my shorts, or do I need some other type of pants? Any help would be great.” 4:19:13 PM 6/24/04 “I would wear clothes, but that's just me. I'm going to Yosemite the last weekend in July, I'll have at least midweight capilene tops and bottoms and a 200 wieght top.” 4:24:02 PM 6/24/04 “One of the great things about the Sierra is that the weather can do ANYTHING even snow in August, or be blazing. When I was there last August it had rained for 7 straight days. Fortunately I caught it on the 7th day.” 5:57:31 PM 6/24/04 “I would bring a light fleece and long underwear and fleece or wool stocking hat... The temp at night can get chilly.” 6:01:16 PM 6/24/04 “[sarcasm]This sounds like another private trip. >:( [/sarcasm]” 6:04:01 PM 6/24/04 “It would be helpful if people who asked questions about what to wear/bring, etc. to the mountains would mention where they're from so we have some reference point. I say this not to be a wise a$$, but because a few years ago I helped carry a BP'er off Dick's Pass in Desolation Wilderness who had come out very unprepared, twisted an ankle and had to spend the night while waiting for help. She was suffering from hypothermia when we found her, was truly a mess emotionally, my heart was breaking getting her out of there.... she thought she was gonna die & kept saying so over & over. It was July and had snowed during the night, which can happen as we know. I'll never forget that poor lady.” 6:19:06 PM 6/24/04 “Ok Wanderer, good point! JPH2 --- who are you and what do you know!!!! LOL” 6:21:35 PM 6/24/04 “Or, put another way, are you a Touron? (jk!)” 6:47:56 PM 6/24/04 They Got'sk Their Own Weather “One of the great things about the Sierra is that the weather can do ANYTHING even snow in August, or be blazing. WLD 05:57:31 PM 06/24/04 I hear ya. It may not be in the Sierras but when I was near Jackson, WY hiking the Red Hills north of Crystal Creek in July, we were caught in a snowstorm uptop on the hills while our camp was down near streamlevel. We all pretty much were wearing shorts and a T-shirt (and had a raincoat for backup lol) and made a fire to try to stay warm. It was snowing pretty hard with HUGE ball-shape snowflake clusters and after about an hour we tried trekking down to camp from our location. It was quite an experience, especially sliding down the wet clay slopes heading back to camp” 7:36:04 PM 6/24/04 I'm from Alabama. “I've been in the woods all my life . I have been hiking a little in, but have been camping all my life so I know the woods better than most. I just bought 1300.00 worth of new equipment so I am prepared. And no this isn't a private trip I am going by my self and if anyone wants to go with me they are welcome to go. I have 3 weeks and no schedule.” 11:18:25 PM 6/24/04 “I really want to start keeping track of how many people die up here every year because they think they know what they're doing & don't have a clue. I used to have save local press clippings when I talked about this to the scouts a few years ago (young males always think they're indestructable)... bottom line = we lose X-country ski "experts", backpackers, climbers, etc. every year, it's a heart-breaker because they're needless deaths. I'm pretty sensitive about this whole "safety" thing. I'm old enough to have, unfortunately, found dead people along trails, had to carry people out of wilderness areas, etc. Most importantly, I'm old enough to (i think) have my priorities in order... I want people to enjoy themselves, but to know their limits & not do something they're not prepared for! Most males can't admit that they don't know what they're doing...it's not part of our culture, and that's why so many die.” 12:06:02 AM 6/25/04 “I'm not tring to climb Everest. I'm just going to do a couple of 2 day hikes like half dome. Get off your be all know all high horse and take a chill pill. I'm a 27 year old that knows his limits very well. All I asked is what I NEEDED TO HAVE TO BE PREPARED. Stop tring to impress everyone.” 12:15:15 AM 6/25/04 “Don't take my comments personally JPH2, they weren't directed toward you specifically. They were comments that were meant to apply to anyone. It's a "general" conversation that got added to your thread, for better or worse.” 12:26:48 AM 6/25/04 “If you're hiking in Yoskimmity in August, especially starting in the valley floor, it'll most likely be warm during the day and nice at night. That's typical. I'd certainly carry a fleece layer or two and a rain shell. I usually hike with nylon zip-off pants, which I usually use in "shorts" mode. Unless an obvious storm front is coming in, just be prepared for some short but potentially heavy afternoon thunder showers and stay off the peaks and ridgelines when you see the big thunderheads developing. Stuff I'm sure you already know. Common sense. The Sierra is known to have mild summer weather for long periods of time, unlike the Rockies, where storm fronts move in frequently. But it's nice to be prepared for those freak storms. You're gonna love it here!” 12:28:59 AM 6/25/04 “Sorry I took it the wrong way Wonderer.” 12:31:20 AM 6/25/04 “Wanderer, Wanderer, I am your counterpart on the other side of the lake. (Washoe Co. Hasty Team) I agree that folks need to be ready for anything. I just about to start another thread to ask you a question. JPH2. What you are planning (capiline underware etc.) should be great. If you have the budget, I'd throw in a frogg togg suit (instead of just a rain shell), mitten shells and liners, the mid weight fleece you mentioned, a fleece beenie and if you are doing long day hikes, an emergency Adventure medical Bivy. I have hiked Half Dome several times and only once have I run into bad weather (I try to pay attention to the forcast and aviod it if it is forcasting sucky weather) Have fun, it should be a great hike!” 12:37:08 AM 6/25/04 “Hi Sierra Guy.. let's go BP'ing!! Am I missing something or are you a new poster here? I've been around for years, but mostly lurk. I post when I think something's important or I can actually lend some value to the thread.” 12:42:08 AM 6/25/04 yep im a new guy to this board “Thanks for the welcome.” 12:49:32 AM 6/25/04 “Welcome Sierraguy. Are you the one and same sierraguy who went for Gorgonio in April? Velcome.” 2:08:52 AM 6/25/04 “As to what to wear in Yosemite in August? Must: 1. Bug Repellent 2. Skeeter netting 3. Afterbite Ammonia Optional: 4. Flip Flops 5. Sunglasses (BCGs) 6. Speedos 7. 99 SPF Sunblock 8. Black dress socks 9. Straw hat That's it. My work is done here. 8)” 2:18:56 AM 6/25/04 “A rack and a rope are handy in Yosemite” 8:14:21 AM 6/25/04 “Interesting thread going on BACKPACKER about day-hikers being unprepared - their remains just found, worth reading to see what others do. http://forums.backpacker.com/thread.jspa?threadID=45142&tstart=0” 6:31:29 PM 6/27/04 6:34:03 PM 6/27/04
