"So, on second thought, maybe that 7 minutes could have saved a hundred lives at the Pentagon. Yeah, he should have stopped reading."

Had he jumped up and reacted he would have been critisized for scaring the poor children or leaving without saying good bye. It doesn't matter. If Bush walked on water everyone would critisize him for not being able to swim. :(

Tsk Tsk. That's a Jesse Jackson Joke from SNL back in the day. Of course, he might have stolen it from someone else.

I heard about a guy who wanted to see the movie, but didn't want to have any of his money go to Michael Moore. He bought a bunch of pirated copies, watched it and destroyed all of the copies.

The Democrats are critical of President Bush waiting seven minutes to begin fighting terror, but Bill Clinton gets a pass for waiting eight years.

RL, that is a pretty lame defense for the claim that the State Department is openly hostile towards the President.

You have not supported your claim at all.

Agreed. This kind of wingnut claptrap is too stupid even for this forum. It reminds me of the worst of democraticunderground.com.

I think I'll take this in a different direction....We can all probably agree that Hitler is the modern poster boy for evil. Agreed?

Do the Bush haters believe that Bush is evil?

I don't know what the "Bush Haters" believe, but a certain Dr. Justin Frank says that Dubya is a psychotic, sadistic megalomaniac.

That sounds about right.

I've just caught up a bit here with some of the ideas flying around on this thread. I am going to backtrack just a minute, if you will, and pose a question about the electoral college. We often hear the get out and vote thetoric being used and the reasoning is that 'every vote is important' (and implying that every vote is equal). If this is so, then my thought here is that the electoral college reduces the significance of certain votes and increases the significance of others. Here's the f'rinstance. Let's say I am a voter in New York who is going to go Democratic in November. New York is historically a democratic state and will probably go to Kerry. Is my vote as significant as the swing voter's in a key battleground state? If the election were decided strictly by popular vote, wouldn't our votes be, by nature, more equal?

thetoric = rhetoric
Treebeard

6/29/04

treebeard. yes.

that's the idea. this way one big city (new york) doesn't hold sway over all of say - upstate, ny.

other reason is this- the forefathers put in the EC to act as a buffer for the general population becuase they felt the average joe was an idiot and might "screw up" an election.

another example of reason 2 is the difference between the house of rep. & and senate.

"More equal"? What you suggest is that all Americans should be treated equal! That, is not the American Way and comes close to heresy!

"The independent counts that followed the election all reached the same conclusion. President Bush won. "
Miss Anne Thrope

Sorry, you need to do your homework. The independent counts showed that Gore won in Florida. They also showed that if Gore had won his appeal, he would have lost - because he only challenged the votes in select districts of Florida. Gore would have won a careful state-wide recount. So, the truth is more complex that Michael Moore or Bush's people would have you believe.

However, the Texas firm that Jeb Bush hired to eliminate felon ex-cons from voting was hugely indiscriminate and disenferanchised many black voters with no criminal record.

Sorry Ped you need to do your homework also. The company is based in Georgia and expressly told Florida officials that they would have to double check the lists for false positives. That information was passed on to the county election commisioners many of whom (most of them Democrats) f'ed up by not double checking which was expressly their responsibility under the law. And the list was not hugely indiscriminate, the statement that has been passed around about 95% false positives has absolutely no basis in fact.

MAT - I went through a huge debate on this already - and produced lots of current info. It's no longer handy, but it was amazing how the newspapers all buried the info about the state-wide count.

Here's one site from a google search: http://www.commondreams.org/views01/1115-02.htm

anyway, the article I read at the time all said in headlines: "Bush would have won if Supreme Court ordered recount" or something to that effect - which was true, and then deep in the article mentioned that a statewide recount would have gone in favor of Gore.

Bison: DBT was merged with an Atlanta based company in March 2000, after the work was done. You are right though that there is a good case for saying that DBT offered to double check the data to reduce false positives, and that Florida (K. Harris in particular) didn't want to do this, thus removing more innocent people from the ballot.

Here's an article on the issue: http://articles.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1111/is_1822_304/ai_83553508
pedxing

two telling excerpts:

"DBT, which frequently is hired by the F.B.I. to conduct manhunts, originally proposed using address histories and financial records to confirm the names, but the state declined, the cross-checks. In Harris's elections-office files, next to DBT's sophisticated verification plan, there is a handwritten note: "DON'T NEED."'

"Of the "matches" on these lists, the civil-rights commission estimated that at least 14 percent--or 8,000 voters, nearly 15 times Bush's official margin of victory--were false. DBT claims it warned officials that "a significant number of people who were not a felon would be included on the list"; but the state, the company now says, "wanted there to be more names than were actually verified."

I heard a great piece on the popular vs. electorial votes. Everyone throws around stats as to who is in the lead in the election. It turns out Skerry is in the popular lead but Bush has the bigger EC states so all is looking good so far.

I won't be happy until Lurch is sharing a one bedroom apartment with Ducaukus at the retirment complex for presidentual losers! LOL!

I have already debunked two lies in the movie. Why would I need to see it?

Ped, You simpleton. The reason you can't find any evidence that independent recounts gave Gore the win is because none of them did.

The article you site has a flashing headline, but it states that independent recount concurred that President Bush won the election. The theories that the ballots where the voter 'intent' could be determined cannot be counted by Florida Law. Devining intent is something liberals really need to deal with.

This is the same article that you trumpeted after the election. Maybe you should read the article instead of the headline.
