....Wilderness, That Is
My kid wants to go there when he is out west this summer.

Does anyone have experience here?

I read something a couple of months ago that said one of the Three Sisters may erupt soon, so maybe it's not the best destination.

It might erupt some time in the next thousand years. Go hiking!

A friend from h.s. lives out there. We keep talking about me coming out for a visit and going up Three Sisters and Mt. Hood. He says it's great, but I have no first hand experience.

I did a trip down ther with a few of the Portland TTers a few years back, and really enjoyed it. It's a few hundred miles out of my neighbourhood though, so I don't really have a lot of info.

China Chas would be our resident Sisters expert I think, but I haven't seen him on the board much lately. Hopefully he'll spot the thread

Hello!

Anyone have advice for Three Sisters Wilderness?

Three-Sisters has an extensive network of trails, most of which lead past lakes filled with trout. The wilderness is dominated by its namesakes, North,Middle, and South Sister. South Sister is a non-technical climb to around 10,800ft; or at least until is blows up...Dont sweat it, climb it while it is still there.
Geo-Graphics makes a great recreational map of the area, and there is plenty of other activities in central Oregon.
China Chas would be able to give you more specific info.

P.S. Bring Mosquito repellent with DEET! That smelly, politically correct, feel-good junk that does not have DEET will not work. Have fun!

I was sending an email to China Chas anyways, so I mentioned this thread. I haven't heard back from him. He may be out of the country

We took the scenic highway west of Bend one summer. It's beautiful, straight, easy to drive, and there were lakeside car campsites available with no reservations. We also enjoyed the High Desert Museum in Bend and hiking through a long lava tube in the area. This was when our kids were youngish and such things suited them.

If I remember right, the guy who wrote Into Thin Air had his first 'mountaineering' experience on one of the Sisters.

It's a cute story. He was a little kid. I think it's in Eiger Dreams.

My advice is don't go in the summer. Wait until temps drop below freezing at night

I am just guessing that 3 sisters is similar to Rainier, Mt St Helen... the rest of Washington/Oregon in the summer.

THE BUGS WILL EAT YOU ALIVE BROTHER

That is why the locals kayak/windsurf in the summer and backpack in Spring/Fall. The black flies and mosquitoes Really Are That Bad

There is a guide book; "100 hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades" by William Sullivan, that's not too bad. Should be able to order it from REI [it is a stock item here in Oregon REI's].
Bugs should be pretty well over by the end of July or first of August.
