Buying a backpack

“I'm 4'11" and I'm happy with the Kelty Flight 4500 (~2 - 3 lbs, depending on how many straps & pockets I add for winter gear). I didn't like the Chimera. Straps were always loose and had to keep tightening. I gave that pack to Newgirl and she liked it. I tried the Golite Trek, but its only good for 25 lbs or less. No hip support. I loved my Gregory (for comfort), but it was 5-6 lbs.”

“Flower, we have those here too and other second hand sports shops. Lots and lots, that's why I asked about used. Found what I thought was a nice pack for $60. It probably would be good for a weekend trip. had lots of pockets and measured 16" on the back plus it had lots of straps for adjusting too. I just don't remember the brand name (it was right next to REI)”

“I have a Bora 95, they are also heavy, so I picked up a Kelty Satorie and dropped quite a few pounds just by swithcing packs. Mountain Smith and Ketly are a weigh less. Something you are going to want to keep in mind. Check the REI Outlet on Line..You can find deals on packs..

“try them on at the store and then check here before you buy. Make sure you have the pack on for at least 30 minutes. Have them put sand bags in it. The browse around to see if it hurts. If it does, try another one.”

“i have the kelty tornado. it fits great and feels good even when i load it up with beer. it is a bit heavy though...somewhere around 5lbs and it doesn't have the daypack option.”

“Buying a Pack is like buying cars????????? so many to choose from. I use Expedition Packs7000 cubic inches and up, because of the kind of Trekking I do all over the world, I own 6 Internal packs and 2 External packs ,I like them all. Everyone will have there opinions, listen to your own instincts and learn. Mapleleaf--buy what you think will work for you. In next years line of packs there will be many packs that will wet your palate. I believe in Granite Gear, Mountainsmith, because I have used them and they have worked well for me. My friends use Gregory, North face, and others and they swear by them, so go out and buy what you think you will enjoy, The EMS ascent is a good pack, made with good material. Good luck”

“An expensive pack is worth it... if you're really gonna backpack a lot. The dern thing will last you 20+ years (unless, of course, you die), so if you break it down to an annual cost over time, a $300 pack will only cost you $150 per DECADE, or $15 per YEAR, or $1.25 per MONTH (come on, man, $1.25 per month for a sweet pack, oh yaaa!), or $0.041666666666666664 per DAY! Can you afford 4 cents a day for a top of the line backpack? If not, grab a shopping cart and a cardboard sign with "WiLL sCrEw fOr FoOd" and I'll see ya on the street corner down by the overpass.

Also people, IMHO, put WAY too much emphasis on getting an ultra light pack, thinking the lighter the pack, the lighter it will feel on your back. EL WRONGO. They compare ounces all the friggin' time. I'd rather carry 50 lbs on my back with a heavy Gregory Whitney than carry 15 lbs in one of those Go-Light jobbers. That 15 lbs will feel HEAVIER than the 50 lbs because the suspension system on the Gregory Whitney is strong, sturdy, and will not sag under loads, so it feels good. You put a few pounds in a virtually beltless nylon bag and you're gonna feel every ounce every second. When fitting packs at REI I always ask people what they intend on carrying and then have them try several packs with the equivelant bean bag weight inside the pack so they can 'feel' the difference. More often than not, a heavier backpack with a substantial suspension system makes the same load feel 'lighter'. And we're trying to make the load 'feel' lightest, right? Not just have the lightest backpack, just because? If any of you challenge my reasoning here, fine, I'll just leave TT. Freakheads.”
