A moment of silence tomrrow for Dr. Mitchell. 7-7-2004 marks the 147th anniv. of when Big Tom found his body at the foot of Mitchell Falls.

Who's Dr Mitchell?

He was a UNC professor that explored and surveyed a lot of the Black Mtn area.

He fell from a waterfall at night and drowned in the pool. Tom Wilson, (Big Tom named after him) found his body.

In my pics, the group pic is taken in front of a sign that talks about Mitchell. He's buried on the summit.

Did they realize they crashed that plane off trail in all the sensitive tundra?

This sounds like an awesome trip, guys. Actually sounds like a hike my brother took me on up to Lei lake in the Cabinets. there was no flipping trail. We just went where the mountain goats could be found. I was wondering if I would make it out alive or if a griz would find my broken body at the base of the cliffs.

EarthNsky pulled another falling down the cliff stunt on this one too - noticed he kinda left that out of his trip report. Seriously, lucky he didn't get hurt, or that none of the rest of us did too - had a couple of hairy moments off trail.

I just came back from my well deserved massage, facial and pedicure. Man, it's nice being spoiled for over 3 hours.

Roam, now I am upset that we didn't take any picture during those hairy situations. Dangit (see, no accent) it would've been nice to have a pic of EarthNSky hanging off the cliff.

I know, we broke the TT rule Gemini (at the least the way Scorchfire explained the rule), when he fell once we realized he wasn't hurt we should have laughed and then took pictures, and THEN helped him up!

well, I am laughing now because it was funny after we realized that he wasn't hurt. Remember the look on his face??

dang, did you see me fall in slowe motion durning the Dolly SOds hike?? I can't remember if anyone but me laught then either...

I posted about the cliff falling stunt in report.

"We marched on towards Winterstar. Stick lost the trail on a subpeak and we climbed up a pretty steep slope through dense growth to back on to it. I think it was there where I almost fell down another cliff. This time I had a root to grab on to and then Topherac pulled me back up (thank you). I stepped on ground that gave from underneath me and down I went. It happened so fast. It's scary to feel you feet dangling while your hanging on a root. It was pretty funny moment though because no one got hurt.

The quote of the trip came shortly after when Gemini quipped "Zeeee trail eeez capooot!!!" We all laughed so hard."

Was the trail between Deep Gap and Mt. Mitchell in good shape?
Pisgah Packrat

that part wasn't too bad really. You still face a lot of tricky sections with a pack on, but it was much better than the previous section from Celo to the gap.

There was actually a trail visible from Deep Gap to Mitchell.

Big steps and rocky, but not overgrown adn it was easy to follow.

yeah, the section from Mitchell to Deep Gap is a popular hike. People rarely venture passed Deep Gap. In some respects its a more difficult trail though in the fact that the up and down hill is steeper and rockier and the hills are higher. The climb out of Deep Gap for instance is around 850 feet and the climb out of Big Tom Gap is 600 feet. Plus there are a few other decent size climbs. It rocks and rolls though and the views are worth it, provided the views are not socked in.

that is a good one too. lol Did you end up going anywhere today, Roam? I snuck over to Shenandoah and bagged the Hawkesbill. Good 3000 foot climb. I was thinking that it would be nice to be closer to NC and be able to get Grandfather Mtn. You should bail on Ithica next week and hike in the Dolly Sods with Bison and me. We're going to get Spruce Knob too! You should definitely come with us. Take about 350 miles off of your trip too.
