“You know? I was on my climbing instructor's course two week-ends ago and we talked about the movie (I loved it). I mentionned that it wouldn't happen like that to-day because we climb with prussiks already on the rope.

The instructor and his organisation repeatedly express frustration with self taught climbers getting themselves and others into trouble - in fact he intervened on one occasion with a climbing couple who were obviously trying out technique learned from a book.

'It shouldn't have happened then, either,' he said (in French), 'they climbed with prussiks back in 1982.' Well, I checked in one of my climbing manuals (from France) and, sure enough, it shows how to fix and use prussiks on a climbing rope.

Just shows t' go ya.”

i don't know what the hell a prussik is. sounds like a prussian/cossack to me.

i think they could have done a better job explaining some of the parts and techy terms to non-climbing laymen like me.

in adrift, the dude had all kinds of little diagrams and maps and stuff. even dummies like me could follow pretty well.

plus, i like pretty little pictures.”

“I'm going to take 4-5 days driving down, 7 days in the winds with Bigpoppa and his gang and 4-5 days driving back. A week's reast and it's back to work - well school.”

we took a similar trip 2 years ago.

spent a week+ in montana, south dakota, and wyoming.

we day hiked and fished from a few different car basecamps.

had a blast and the people out west are great.”

“Awesome, awesome movie in my opinion. I loved the extras on the DVD version and watched them all. The movie really examines some interesting questions about the obsessive nature of mountain climbers.

The on-location scenery was fantastic. I loved the narrative style the filmmaker used. Interviewing the three of them, while recreating the story, made it real for me.”

“Yeah, the injured climber (why can I not think of names right now) was funny and cute, his partner reminds me of beaker from the muppets. Their drifter friend seemed clueless. It would have been entertaining from a mountaineering standpoint in it's own right. The personalities make it riveting.”

“Bryan, my 13 year old was shocked when joe (or was it simon? I get the names confused) cut the rope. He could not understany why he would do that. I had to explain the best I could why he did what he did.

Remember now, I never mountaineered, so for me it was amazing that after falling he actually did climb even futher down. That's what eventually saved his life, but isn't it exactelly against what instinkt tells you?
