Touching the Void on DVDView Messages“Picked it up this weekend at REI. Score. What an awesome movie.” 7:47:28 AM 7/06/04 “i liked it a lot too, but i think 'adrift' was a little better.” 8:06:05 AM 7/06/04 “You know? I was on my climbing instructor's course two week-ends ago and we talked about the movie (I loved it). I mentionned that it wouldn't happen like that to-day because we climb with prussiks already on the rope. The instructor and his organisation repeatedly express frustration with self taught climbers getting themselves and others into trouble - in fact he intervened on one occasion with a climbing couple who were obviously trying out technique learned from a book. 'It shouldn't have happened then, either,' he said (in French), 'they climbed with prussiks back in 1982.' Well, I checked in one of my climbing manuals (from France) and, sure enough, it shows how to fix and use prussiks on a climbing rope. Just shows t' go ya.” 9:18:09 AM 7/06/04 “I still love the movie, BTW. I'll call EMS in Lake Placid and if they have it I'll drive down this afternoon.” 9:19:27 AM 7/06/04 Two Thumbs Up “Our youngest son gave me the DVD for Father's Day. Very good flick.” 9:21:32 AM 7/06/04 “that's a good example of one of things i liked better about 'adrift' i don't know what the hell a prussik is. sounds like a prussian/cossack to me. i think they could have done a better job explaining some of the parts and techy terms to non-climbing laymen like me. in adrift, the dude had all kinds of little diagrams and maps and stuff. even dummies like me could follow pretty well. plus, i like pretty little pictures.” 9:23:38 AM 7/06/04 “Kewl. BTW, my son gave me the official National Rugby Women's Team calender. Boyoboyoboyoboyoboy!” 9:24:04 AM 7/06/04 “Sacco, I'll show you at the cook-off.” 9:25:01 AM 7/06/04 “Kewl, now I feel like I cheated. ;-)” 9:25:57 AM 7/06/04 “can't make it to the cookoff. you going to the buttkicker ?” 9:27:47 AM 7/06/04 “Nope, I'm off to Windorama in Wyoming with the antique tent trailer I'll be working on to-day (I swear it will be worth money some day).” 9:30:13 AM 7/06/04 “good excuse. the winds rock.” 9:31:59 AM 7/06/04 “I'm going to take 4-5 days driving down, 7 days in the winds with Bigpoppa and his gang and 4-5 days driving back. A week's reast and it's back to work - well school.” 9:34:01 AM 7/06/04 “sounds awesome. we took a similar trip 2 years ago. spent a week+ in montana, south dakota, and wyoming. we day hiked and fished from a few different car basecamps. had a blast and the people out west are great.” 9:47:01 AM 7/06/04 “I've had the DVD for nearly a month (media connections). I've watched it three times now. Great documentary.” 9:48:19 AM 7/06/04 “Well, nah, nah, na, nah naaaaah Rub it in why don't ya?” 9:53:03 AM 7/06/04 “If you insist: Actually, I've had it for over a month. Moooohahahahaha!” 9:53:43 AM 7/06/04 “Just for that comment Artex, may all your trails be plagued with the mud of Bradley Pond. Mooohahahaha” 9:57:51 AM 7/06/04 “Hey, I'll take any trail at this point.. so long as it's not hot and humid like this Florida crap. Bring on the mud!” 9:59:15 AM 7/06/04 “Lumberzac, LUMBERZAC, that was just WRONG! Be kewl, we just might be able to persuade Artex to partake of the misery at Bradley Pond this autumn. I just ordered the DVD from Indigo. BTW, my French climbing manual with the prussiks was published in 1977.” 2:22:33 PM 7/06/04 “I mean that trail contributed to my malemenopause Jeep getting eaten.” 2:23:32 PM 7/06/04 “Sorry I was a little upset for a moment because I still have yet to see the movie. I’m better now.” 2:27:14 PM 7/06/04 “Bring the backpacking, propane powered TV and DVD player to Ithaca and I'll bring it down.” 2:32:21 PM 7/06/04 “Lumberzac, seeing as I've seen it a gazillion times because I've had the DVD for sooooooooooo long, want me to just tell you all about it?” 3:04:03 PM 7/06/04 “If I don't end up with any hiking plans this weekend maybe I'll pick it up and watch it.” 3:05:53 PM 7/06/04 “I loved it and saw it in the theater. I have it on right now for my visiting relatives to watch.” 10:58:46 PM 7/06/04 “Artex, that twisted, evil sense of hunour of yours will prove to be an effective paedagogical device and will aid you throughout your teaching career. Enjoy!” 10:31:51 AM 7/07/04 “SCORE!! Circuit City has it and I picked it up today.” 6:22:30 PM 7/07/04 “great! now I just gotta get a dvd. Wonderful views.” 6:37:49 PM 7/07/04 “It's a family trait, gremlin.. and probably explains why more than half of us are teachers.” 7:09:09 PM 7/07/04 “watched it today for the first time. I really did like it a lot. Even my kids watched it, which surprised me a lot!” 11:22:50 PM 7/22/04 “awesome! Dare and I just rented it. I had read the book (twice) and really enjoyed it. It is difficult for any movie to capture the same kind of angst, etc that you can feel when really absorbed in a book, but this movie came very close...good job.” 8:27:45 AM 7/23/04 “I see AmyG made her monthly post. lol I can't believe I still haven't seen this movie yet. I was in EMS yesterday and they had it there. I almost bought it until I saw the price. I won't pay $30 for a movie.” 8:32:27 AM 7/23/04 “Whoa nelly lz mine was like 17 or 19.99. Pretty sure, at REI” 8:34:49 AM 7/23/04 “That's why I did buy it. I knew I could find it cheaper some place else.” 8:36:33 AM 7/23/04 “Smart man.” 8:56:19 AM 7/23/04 “I am about to buy me the book. Prolly should've read the book before the movie.” 9:36:08 AM 7/23/04 “I generally try to do the opposite. When I read the book first I'm often disappointed with the movie.” 9:38:42 AM 7/23/04 “hey Zac, I resemble that remark. ;p (hey, now this makes 2 posts!)” 9:52:32 AM 7/23/04 “Awesome, awesome movie in my opinion. I loved the extras on the DVD version and watched them all. The movie really examines some interesting questions about the obsessive nature of mountain climbers. The on-location scenery was fantastic. I loved the narrative style the filmmaker used. Interviewing the three of them, while recreating the story, made it real for me.” 3:33:05 PM 7/23/04 “Yeah, the injured climber (why can I not think of names right now) was funny and cute, his partner reminds me of beaker from the muppets. Their drifter friend seemed clueless. It would have been entertaining from a mountaineering standpoint in it's own right. The personalities make it riveting.” 3:43:51 PM 7/23/04 “Bryan, my 13 year old was shocked when joe (or was it simon? I get the names confused) cut the rope. He could not understany why he would do that. I had to explain the best I could why he did what he did. Remember now, I never mountaineered, so for me it was amazing that after falling he actually did climb even futher down. That's what eventually saved his life, but isn't it exactelly against what instinkt tells you? the drifter friend was nothing but an idot. sorry...I didnt' really like him too much.” 4:00:25 PM 7/23/04 “I think I just voided in my pants...” 4:06:38 PM 7/23/04 “simon cutting saved both thier lives...cause Joe falling the 80 feet into the "sheltered" ice split saved his balls” 12:41:35 PM 7/24/04 “i know it did, and that's what I had to make my 13 year old understand.” 12:53:42 PM 7/24/04 “I rented the DVD last night and that movie kicked my arse!!! What a film!! Spectacular!” 6:51:41 PM 8/10/04 “I had it last weekend, still do fora few days, it is AWESOME - the book is better, more insightful to his thoughts and feelings.” 7:49:31 PM 8/10/04 I rented it last night “and found it just as riveting as the first showing in the movie. I also read the book twice. The cinematography is awesome...second time around.” 11:37:39 PM 8/10/04 “Hey snowpeak, nice to see you posting over it. It was nice to meet you last weekend. I need to go out and buy the movie, it was great.” 11:04:56 AM 8/11/04 On PBS this November “Touching the Void Based on the international best-seller by renowned climber Joe Simpson, TOUCHING THE VOID recounts the extraordinary story of a climb Simpson and his climbing partner, Simon Yates, undertook in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. Simpson and Yates return to Siula Grande together for the first time to retell their story for the cameras. Premiering: Sunday, November 21 at 9:00 pm ET” 9:02:09 AM 9/30/04
