Pictured Rocks
Got back on monday, the trip was great! we hiked the mosquito/chapel loop (very slowly i might add) some of the most breath-taking views i have ever had the pleasure of seeing. had a small bear scare but all in all it was a great trip. I want to through hike it now!! is it possible to do in a (long) weekend?

Buddah, I have done that loop too, its a great hike for sure. The whole trail is like 47 miles I think. It would be doable (depending on ones physical condition) in a 2-3 day stint pretty easily I think. Glad you had fun!

Woohoo! posting late at night, can't sleep. Cause im leaving at 6:30am tommorow for Isle Royale. Hope to get a few good pictures (moose!), and get a good view of the night sky, i imagine the stars stand out fairly good up there. Anyway, yeah, im very excited. I suspect tommorow will be a long day.

If my Poli Sci Prof approves of my idea for my project, I will be going to Jordan River Pathway in the next week or so. I think it's a long shot, as there really is no way of verifying my work.

D - thanks for the pick up.

Howitzer, the lack of lighting on IR certainly does give good stargazing opportunities, although most campsites are under forest canopies. Daisy Farm has some good open space in the meadow and at the shore -- shorelines will be the most likely viewing spots, unless you want to venture up onto Greenstone Ridge at night. Surprisingly, there are a few flight paths over IR -- so you may see some contrails from airliners. The time I flew as a guest on a KC-135 mission to refuel B-52's over Hudson Bay we passed over IR and I got to see the island on the downscan radar -- way cool image.

I think some are still away for a long weekend. You should get an answer soon, but I don't think this is a private trip. Are you talking about the "For the kids" outing?

There were only 3 spots left on the ferry 3 weeks ago. This is a public trip, but you may want to bring a kid with ya, lol!

Join us. When I bought our ferry tickets there were only 3 spots left. However, they were going to run another ferry on the afternoon of the 13th. Might be lots more room there. There might also be the option of going in on the 12th. Find the link or phone to the ferry on the trip page and give 'em a call.

Camping this weekend (7/30-8/1)
We're going camping!!!! lol
We were supposed to go to OH this weekend but since my wife has to work on Sat. morning she decided we'd just go camping!!! I'm just heartbroke, can't ya tell :)
Anyway since she does have to work Sat we will prolly just go up to Yankee Springs, that way we can go up Fri. and she can drive back Sat. morning to work then come back up for the rest of the weekend (she only has to work for like 2 hrs...don't ask, it's long and complicated...lol)
Anyway if any of ya are bored this weekend feel free to come on over and join us!

Ooooh, would love to but I have to work Sunday morning. (yeah, I know, feel pity for me) Also have to move my horse to a new stable. Hopefully some others will be able to get away. Have a great time. I like Yankee Springs! If you feel adventurous, ask at the ranger station about the orienteering course. It's permanently marked and I understand they have maps available.

Soon as I find out for sure I'll let ya know.

Nigal - I have NO idea, I washed my hands of the whole deal....lol
Actually I'm not sure, my wife has a stepsister that lives in Shadyside (or something like that) and they're supposed to figure out where we're going....All I know for sure is Sat. we have to go to a family reunion in Hartville, which is like halfway between Akron and Canton.

Newbie from Michigan!
Hi There...
Found this thread, so I thought I'd add my name into the hat.

I'm from just north of the only city in the U.S. North of the Canadian Border... ;-) (aka "Detroit", Motor City, etc.)

Have camped near the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Muskegon, Mackinaw City, Sault Ste. Marie, Tacquamenon (sp?) Falls, Marquette, Baraga.... to name a few places around the State....

Been to the Porcupine Mountains as well... One day, my hubby & I hope to go to Isle Royale to camp!

Good to see another from Michigan.

I live in Ferndale, which is also just north of Detroit.

If your interested, I'm going to be putting together a trip up to Manistee River that willbe takng place in the month or so.

Maybe you can make it..

Welcome!

Kewl!!!
Great to hear that there are people nearby...

Laqtis-- is that going to be a canoeing trip? Sounds like fun-- We'll have to see what our schedule looks like....

Eventually, we'd like to go back country camping with people who know what they are doing.... In the meantime, we are slowly building up our equipment for a future backcountry trip.... :-)

Our biggest adventure occurred on a trip to the Grand Canyon in 2001... we didn't mean to go on a wilderness trail.... almost spent the night (accidentally) on the inside of the canyon!

Cool pink. You'll be real happy to know that there are a bunch of people who are very knowledgable about hiking right in yer area.

By hooking up with the people here, I've been able to extend my hiking knowledge at least 100 fold.

The trip I'm talking about doing is not a canoe trip, although there are Michiganers here that do kayak and canoe. The trip is a hike trip along one of Michigan best lower peninsula areas, the Manistee River Loop. Beautiful area. If you've already been to the Canyon, this would be no problem for ya.

Also, I have a trip planned for PA. Check out the trips page for "Giving Thanks". That's the name of it.

The MRT trip will be posted when I get some dates worked out soon. I've been full time school dood over this past summer, so my life is slowing down a lot to get some hike time in.

Hope you can make some of the trips!

Hey, Helinka!

Are there any super-secret sweet spots in SW Ontario? I've been to the Pinery, Pointe Pelee, Wheatley, Rondeau, Walpole/Squirrel Island and Holiday Beach.

I want to check out the Chrysler Canada Greenway, St. Claire National Wildlife Refuge and the Ojibway Preserve. Ever been to any of these? Experiences?

Thanks!
