Newfoundland & BP'ing

“Daydreaming about backpacking and vacations again.....thinking Newfoundland might be pretty sweet.

Anyone been there? Got any info?

algonquin park in ontario is pretty dam cool.

moose galore and some wolves, too.

i think gremlin should host a trip there since he's pretty close.

lots of hiking and canoeing.

they also have lots of nice X-ski trails.

“In August '90 I drove from Vermont to Green Point, Newfoundland with my best friend and two oldest boys, four and seven......number three was born two months later.

From central Vermont it was over 1,100 miles driving each way.
There was an over-night ferry ride from North Sydney, NS. to Port Au Basque, NL.

We car camped at Green Point just a little north of Gros Morne, the highest point in the province at about 2,600 feet.

The beach there was rocks the size of bowling balls.
At night there was the sound of the rocks clacking in the surf.

The boys thoroughly soaked their shoes and made good use of their little green rain slickers.

We gathered mussels and steamed them.
One of the boys even tried to eat one, but spit it out.......I ate the rest.

There is a trail or two to the top of Gros Morne, but I would have had to carry Henry to get him up there.


The island is huge with lots of fjords and inlets.
There must be some great backpacking there......somewhere.”

“Decided to go to Puerto Rico next week instead. Leaving on Monday for 5 days/4 nights.

Need to get a book and see what all to do - definately want to check out the rainforest!!”

Europe is mad expensive right now becuase of the upcoming games, example being Vienna was over $800 for coach!!

Newfoundland is a $500 plane ticket and I'd rather save that to go with a group of friends and camp and hike, etc...

Always wanted to go to Puerto Rico and it's relatively cheap so why not? Oye mammi!”

“Hey Twinks, my family is from Newfoundland. Look up the Cabot trail, it's supposed to be one of the longest on the island. Newfoundland is full of mountains and forests, making an ideal place to get away.”

“I thought the Cabot Trail was on Cape Breton Island which is part of Nova Scotia...

Anyway, the plan for my September vacation is to visit Newfoundland, Anticosti and Labrador...probably no backpacking as I only have two weeks and lots to see. I'll do plenty of dayhiking though.”

“I believe it goes through both I haven't been there in many years, anyway, check out Tera Nova National Park. there's about 50Km of trails running throught it.”

“You may be right Twig, the memory distorts after a while. I spent every summer there as a kid but haven't been there in about fiveteen years. Mostly the St. Johns and Bay Roberts areas.”

“well I've been trying to get to this trip for a couple of years, so I hope it works out...I really want to see an iceberg!

I'd love to stop at many places along the way, but I really don't think I have time. I decided to skip playing tourist in the closer places so I could get to the furthest places. The others I can save for extended weekends or one week vacations.”

“The Cabot Trail is a highway that goes up the west side of Cape Breton Island and through the Cape Breton Highlands......great views of the Gulf Of Saint Lawrence.

twigeater, you got to bag Gros Morne.....highest thanng in Newfoundland......west side of island about 200+ miles north of Port Au Basques(SW corner).

You can bag the highest points in Quebec and Labrador at once.

Mount D'Iberville/Mount Caubvick, at 5420ft/1652m, sits on the provincal border and is the highest point in Quebec/Labrador.

You want to see an iceberg???

I have some friends who've biked the Cabot Trail, I guess it's tough (big hills, headwinds). I have a small picture of it on my wall here at work, it looks very scenic.

One thing I found in researching this trip, is that current guidebooks are hard to find, as was ferry info to Anticosti. I do have some info now, and just need to sit down and plan what I'm gonna see and do.
I have heard good things about Gros Morne.

“I was there at Gros Morne but the boys were too young to hike it.

I should have bagged it while I was there.

I believe Gros Morne is a baldy, the views of the Gulf Of Saint Lawrence would be real nice.”

“Don't bother with Anticosti, unless you're going to hunt deer with an outfitter - I think you're thinking of the Magdelaine Islands. You can take a ferry from Prince Edward Island.”
