So much for religion!

You see that’s the thing.   One day seven or eight years ago I remarked how odd it was that a person would be going on and on about their religion on one thread while being as nasty as they could be on another.   I’d never seen anything quite like it.   I thought the alternating back and forth was just bizarre…

Anyway…… Nigel’s been ‘on the rag’ about that comment ever since.

Yeah….   since about 2001.

Wow, that must have stung tilt. How many damn question marks did you use in that post?

I have no idea what comment you are going on about from 2001. But then again, you always have given your own words more importance than anyone else. Simple truth is you're arrogant and I have a sense of humor. The two come together and you end up pissed off.

On hiking threads, Tilt is a laid back guy....I think, it's been a long time since I've seen him on a hiking thread. On political threads he reminds me of the boyfriend of Jenny from Forest Gump. There's this one scene where he excuses hitting her because, "It's just that GD Nixon,...." Everytime he flames someone, I have that dude as my mental image.

For Mutt's question, the joke might be prejudiced or bigoted - but it's not racist. It doesn't deride a race. It also doesn't work on an attribute you are born with, but with attire one can chose. - pedXign

Well I can say that Wounded Knee's joke is not racist because it's only targeting inner city stereotypes. There are inner-city sections that are largely black in which you certainly can find elements of those stereotypes there. But, there are laso latinos, whites, and asians in inner cities as well that possess "black" stereotypical characteristics. There are "normal" folks of all races as well, of course.

On the other hand, I've lived in a number of small towns, and those steretypes were not prevalent in the black or latino communities - or at least no more so than any other social demarcation therein (ie very few).

So if you can correctly say "redneck" steretypes are acquired, then you can also correctly say that "black" stereotypes are acquired as well.

The same holds true for whites. There are nuggets of truth to the redneck steretype. I can walk down to any local trailer park here and probably find a toothless Bubba stereotype. I'd find "normal" folks as well. Whites in affluent suburbs - very little redneck display.

The point is, the "redneck" stereotype *is* used by minorities as a pejorative against whites. The "black" stereotype *is* used by whites as a pejorative against blacks. Then again, both can be used in jest as well (or at least attempted). Both have elements of truth, but neither are representative. If one is always racist, then they *both* are - unless you hold a jimmysan/violin double standard! But then your credibility is shot.

That part wasn't fair on my part, I was using that part of the explanation to describe the character. I think the analogy for me comes from how the guy freaks because of politicians he disagrees with.

Yes, I react poorly to mass killing.   And I do seriously wonder about people who seem not to.   Yes, absolutely.

Nixon.... Yes, there are similarities with Bush, but people stood up to Nixon's criminality.... up until the pardon, anyway.

I also react poorly to insipid cat pictures.

Mutt: Your logic is lacking. The robots weren't taught hip hop and rap, or have oversized pants hanging below their underwear or anything else that was consistent with a cultural stereotype. They were painted black. That's racial, not cultural. If you made the joke about the robot being painted white, that would be the equivalent.

In fact, the way you say the joke worked - race or color being equated with one particular sub-cultural stereo-type is what a lot of racism is about.
