Under intense pressure from the Bush administration to sell its controversial al-Jazeera network, the nation of Qatar stunned the television industry today by agreeing to sell the broadcast company to Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Channel.

Television insiders were taken aback that the network whose motto is “We Report – You Decide,” would acquire a broadcast entity whose slogan is “Death to the Infidels.”

But according to Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox parent company News Corporation, the merger was a natural because, in his words, “We took a look at their format and realized that it was almost identical to ours.”

“If we really roll up our sleeves and make this merger work, we may wind up with the fairest and most balanced network mankind has ever known,” Mr. Murdoch added.

The media mogul said that changes to al-Jazeera’s programming would be “minimal” at first: “We’ll be going through their news copy and every time they call President Bush ‘Satan,’ we’ll take out the words ‘President Bush’ and replace them with ‘Ted Kennedy.’”

But viewers can expect much bigger changes to come, as the channel plans to drop al-Jazeera’s most popular program, “This Week in Jihad,” in favor of a new show, “Hannity and Hussein.”

In the words of a Fox-Jazeera press release, “Hannity and Hussein” will be “a lively political discussion featuring Fox personality Sean Hannity, from the right, and deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, from his prison cell.”

“Last Dec. 16, California billionaire Ron Burkle penned a personal letter to Rubert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp., which owns the New York Post.

The letter set in motion a chain of events that would trigger an unprecedented scandal in journalism, devastate the Post and rock its franchise column.

The salutation was simply "Rupert" and Burkle called him a friend, signing "Best Regards, Ron."

By turns, frank and colloquial, Burkle's point was still crystal-clear: He was "getting screwed" by Page Six, the Post's lead gossip column.

"I'm not quite sure what to do when your paper keeps writing things about me that are not true," he said, citing reports that he was buying Elite Models Management for former President Bill Clinton to run, owned shares of Barnes & Noble, and leased a yacht for Clinton and Michael Jackson.

"I hate to bother you with this; but at the end of the day, it is your newspaper," Burkle concluded.

Increasingly frustrated as more false items about him appeared in Page Six, Burkle had no response from Murdoch. A Post editor's promise that Burkle's complaints would be addressed was an empty one.

False reports about Burkle's romantic life continued to appear in the column.

Then, in a series of e-mails to a Burkle aide, Page Six writer Jared Paul Stern implied that he could solve the billionaire's problems. Last month, Stern stepped up his ploy and in two secretly videotaped meetings with Burkle, he solicited "protection" money — $100,000 down payment and $10,000 a month to be wired to Stern's bank account.

The Manhattan U.S. attorney's office and the FBI have now launched a sweeping investigation of the Page Six operation.

MySpace Censors Anti-War Websites

Rupert Murdoch's MySpace has been caught in another act of alternative media censorship after it was revealed that bulletin posts containing links to Prison Planet.com were being hijacked and forwarded to MySpace's home page. MySpace has placed Prison Planet on a list of blocked websites supposedly reserved for spam, phishing scams or virus trojans.
