Sasha is our golden retriever she is about 6 years old and has never been out on the trail. I have been taking her out into the woods around here and she is doing ok but she is a little out of shape as she gets worn out easily. Yesterday I took her swimming in a lake for the first time in her life. She didnt want to get into the water untill I did. LOL it was so cute. She did well off her leash but tended to run around like a mad dog. She did come when ever I called and the words "Want a treat" are like magic. Any suggestions on how to turn a house dog into a trail dog?

Yes they can learn
Free, I have 4 dogs, one former search and rescue/pet therapy dog and the rest pets. 3 of the 4 go hiking with me and I only have 3 commands, come, sit, and down. That covers everything I need in the woods. If you want a great book that will give you the basics and is a great read get How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend : A Training Manual for Dog Owners, by New Skete Monks. Any specific questions you can e-mail me and I will try my best to answer.
