So, myself and a friend are planning a trip for maybe Jab/Feb 2005. Just playing with a few ideas at the moment, but anyone here interested in finding out a little.

well I don't know.... damn, I thought that was the UPS guy. .... anyhow, well that's why I'm interested in maybe getting a few people together, as it will keep the costs slightly lower. If it's just two of us then I'll prolly opt for a fully guided trip.

you could go recreate the climb from "Touching the Void"

just skip the part about falling and breaking legs, and that whole crevase sequence.

Stay on top of the glaciers - easier to take photos there.

Let's talk $$$$$$$ and how long - 2 weeks?

Please no "Touching the Void" repeats!

Wow, that looks amazing. But I gotta agree with Roam -- way too far to drive, so I guess its out of reach for now...

yeah, I'm looking at approx 2 weeks. One package I've found offers 2 weeks fully guided and fed for 1,400 GBP. But I did read an article recently where the group picked up some maps and went down themselves. A train from Santiago south costing about $150. So then you're looking at the cost of the flight, the train, food and possibly a couple of night's accomodation.
Really I'm at the exploratory stage at the moment. But it's somewhere I've always wanted to go. Apparently there's also a Lonely Planet guidebook to trekking in Pakagonia, which I'm gonna pick up soon.

This is a place on my list of "Top Five Places I'd Like to Visit SOON"

But, not Jan/Feb 2005. I won't have any $ for that.

Mmmmmm Patagonia (eh, wolfsister?)

I just spent February and March going down through Patagonia and logged about 30 nights on a variety of hikes. You can see some pics of some of the hikes I did on my webshots page by clicking on my name. Do pick up the LP Patagonia book as it's well done. $3000 US for two weeks? You're getting cleaned out, I think. Get the LP book and do it yourself. The thing is, two weeks is a really tight time to get through Patagonia. The Camino Austral (the dirt road "highway" through Chile) is REALLY slow going and LOOONG. If I were you, I would look into renting a 4X4 instead and skip the bus. And you may need to limit where you go in Patagonia and concentrate on a certain area -- such as just southern (Torres del Paine and the like) or more northern. Also know that Patagonia extends into two countries: Argentina and Chile.

yeah, would be limited in the trip. The cost is really why I'm looking to go unguided, and that's what I'll probably end up doing. I think it can be done pretty reasonably all in.
