Any of you Michiganders know of any mountain biking trails that would be good for loading up the paniers for some bike packing?

There are a couple of rails to trails good for that type of trip. Try the Kal-Haven trail to ride from Kalamazoo to South Haven right on Lake Michigan. Beautiful. I'd like to take that trip myself.

There's another that I was on during my last adventure race. Can't recall the name but it goes north and south for lots o miles through Muskegan. West coasters???

My choice would be Kal-haven. 34 miles, beach, dunes, quaint South Haven resort town. Nice.

Can you camp along them? I had thought about the Potawat-whatever trail near you but wasn't sure if 17 miles was too short for a weekend.

I have desided that my #2 dream place to live is in Muskegon. Such a wonderful town!

The Poto is a pretty technical ride for bike packing but there is a campsite 6-7 miles in. You could also try High Country Pathway (70 miles) if ambitious There are shorter loops all over that area and many campgrounds. I was just checking out my Mountain Biking Michigan book last week AAMOF.

I think there is a state campground just south of southhaven. A little extra road ride.

muskegon
what a wonderful place. there are a lot of trails near green creek in north muskegon i would say about 30 miles but they are all unmarked and good luck finding a map. I've camped there about 20 times with no problems at all.

Nigal, I am drawing blank here. Next time I am at REI I will get some trail bike maps for ya.

Nige, that 17 miles may seem short but it's pretty grueling.

And with an extra 10 pounds over the back wheel it'd seem even more so.

The Kal-Haven is a packed gravel trail, with at least one State Park along the way. Note lots of car camping in that park. We've used the park as a base camp and then headed out for day trips.
