Am I out $40?
Late last summer I bought a National Park Pass at REI for $40, $10 off the normal price. I didn't activate it till April of this year. I now have a pass that says "VALID THROUGH April 2004" which of course did me squat when I tried to use it today.

Any REI folks here?

Shawn - I would say you screwed yourself. LOL.

I bought one from REI last August also. The card had 2004 with Jan thru Dec printed on the back. When I first used it that Aug, the park punched out the 2004 August month and that established my end date.
You would have been OK if you had used it sometime from late summer to Dec 2003.

Are you out $40?
Nope. That $40 went towards the costs of operating our National Parks. To me it seems like $40 well spent. Buy a new one and support the Parks more.

StoveStomper is right. We activated ours the first time we entered a national park with it. From that date, we have a year to utilize it. If you activated yours April of this year, you have until April of '05 to use it. So, not sure what the problem is.

Geezr - The problem is the card only had 2004 and then the months to punch out. The card was sold and intended to be started in 2003, so the park person punching the month out saw the 2004 April month and punched that out.

How do those things work? Is that one pass per person? per family? per car?

SS, gotcha.

I think you're still correct though: He screwed himself. ;-)

Rudy
The card holder and passengers in the car at the entrance station get in with the one card.

LOL, Rudy, won any football games for the Irish lately?

Geezr - Yep, he screwed himself, lol.

I think that's the second time you've done that, Stovie.

Hey, you should join us on the Moose-a-palooza trip in September. Come on, take a week off, fly into Chicago, have at it!

Ruby - That's tempting. Flights to Chicago aren't too expensive, but I think I have a damn sea trial that week. Anyway, aren't there a bunch of yankees up there? ;-)

Rudy...
...and if it's a walk in park (Muir Woods comes to mind) then it admits you and your spouse, children, and/or parents.

Yup! ;-D

That's the beauty of it!

Sea trial, schmee trial. Like you can't get someone to cover?

SS, look what you've started. Now I'm a boy with a self-named movie.

Thanks for the info BearCrossing!

Hi. I work at REI. I bought the REI National Park Pass too. It's a great way to go! If you buy the annual pass, hey, you gotta use it. Don't buy a 2004 pass for the year 2008. Here's the details:

Enjoy the natural beauty and grandeur of the United States with a National Parks Pass--good for one full year from month of validation at first visit.

Receive a coupon for $10 off your next purchase of $10 or more at REI with your purchase of a National Parks Pass from REI
Please note: This coupon is not good towards the purchase of the National Parks Pass

More than 80% of pass proceeds go straight into vital park programs to protect and improve these national treasures

At any National Park with an entrance fee, your pass admits you and any passengers with you in your private vehicle

At those National Parks with a per-person admission fee, your pass admits you, your spouse, your children and your parents
Covers park admission; does not cover Use Fees such as parking, overnight campgrounds, shuttles, boat launches and guided interpretive tours

National Parks Pass is non-transferable, non-refundable and non-dividendable (REI members do not earn a dividend on the purchase of this pass)

Please note: 2004/05 pass is only valid through December 31, 2005 if validated in 2005

Shawn, my guess is the NPS made a mistake on your card. Even if you used your annual pass starting late last summer, it would go through late summer of 2004, not April 2004. It's probably April of 2005 and they screwed up at the gate. Note: it's usually women working at the NPS gates. (ducking)

Now I know who the REI spy is!

Ahem. Okay, I guess I'm supposed to give a little speech here. My real name is Brian, but I go by Buck Forester. Why? I dunno. The name Indiana Jones was already taken, so my choices were limited. I might be a top-secret double agent with access to all your data files, you don't know. So keep that in mind when rating my photos. Nobody gets hurt. Ha! I only jest. Or do I? Hmmmm. I live in the Sacramento area, also known as SacOfTomatoes, California. My passions are backpacking, paddling, mountaineering, and just about anything else in beautiful wild country that can cause severe injuries.

hehe..

I think that is my problem, I didn't use it till April of this year, which is the month the gaurd punched, so it was out of date a few days after I activated it.

So that's what you look like, Buck? Now I can put your face to your name every time I laugh at one of your posts on the gun con-troll thread.
