Look on the bright side. You can eat venison without fear!

Actually, you can get variant Creuzfeld-Jacob's disease from venison. A guy who ate mostly wild meat in Montana died from it.

(I'm cooking caribou in Ithaca this evening.)

My favourite mad cow joke that is not rude is:

Two cows are standing in a field and one asks, 'Have you heard about this mad cow disease?'

The other answers, 'It doesn't concern me; I'm a penguin.'

It is my understanding that nobody really knows how the unfortunate few get that illness, whether it's hereditary, contageous, or just bad luck. Once diagnosed, most don't even have a year left to live, it's kind'of like Lou Gerig's and Alzheimers expedited in rapid decay of the patient.

I use to give blood, then one day when questioning me they mentioned the illness, and unfortunately my uncle died of it. Turns out they ended up having to recall all of my blood for fear of transmitting whatever. So I did some research to find that it's so rare that not much is known about it, and chances are, statistically, I'll never get it.

But that was about 10 years ago. Hopefully alot has been learned about this since then.
