Here's a little Real Life Weirdness from one of Your guys:

I went in for my yearly checkup a few months ago and my internist made the same 'joke' about Gore saying he invented the Internet, yadda-whatever. I was a little taken aback, and the guy just didn't seem like his usual laid-back self. Somewhat quizically I replied, "Uh... He never said that."

And the guy threw a fit.

It was The Damndest Thing I'd ever seen. He snarled something under his breath, stood up and stormed out of the examining room, almost slamming the door behind him. He hadn't hardly begun the checkup; he'd only been in the room about a minute.

I'd never seen an actual physician act that way. Sure... TV doctors do it all the time.... I was half expecting Alan Funt's ghost to pop out of the damn closet!! LOL!

I wish there HAD been a camera there... the look on my face had to be as funny as ANYTHING I ever saw on Candid Camera.


Anyway -- It got me to thinkin', as they say. What if I had an emergency and this guy was in the middle of one of his tantrums? I mean, you trust your damn LIFE to these guys and then to see one flake out like that...?

Not Good.

I think the people who made a big deal over that one sentence took it out of context to do a hatchet job: nothing more, nothing less. After a decade, that crap gets pretty old.

Looking at various histories of the Internet and its precursors, CERN didn't release the World Wide Web until 1992 and InterNIC wasn't created until 1993. Gore had already been in Congress for 15 years at that point. When he was first elected to the House, USENET didn't even exist.

To my understanding, he was one of the few congressmen who took an interest in emerging technologies beyond the usual cursory staff briefings. He was known as someone who really stayed up to date on a wide range of technology issues.

He served in the House of Representatives from January of 1977, went directly to the Senate in January 1985 and served there until his election as Vice President in 1992. What did he do to make the Internet possible in during those 15 years? I'll see what I can find re: relevant bills and ammendments he sponsored. These projects don't happen without Congress.
