So we have a bunch of fitness freaks in here, huh?
Cool :-) maybe u'all can motivate my lazy a$$ LOL
I have been seriously slacking the last month or so...need a good kick in the rear I think!!
Pathman - congrats on the weight/belt size loss....thats a great feeling ain't it?
SG - like everyone else has already said....don't sweat the body fat thing to much, just keep working out and eat right...the rest will take care of itself!
If you really do wanna track your BF I would really recommend buying a pair of calipers, those scales are notoriously inaccurate.....I used to be able to change the readings I got outa ours by as much as 15% just by changing my water input :-)

The Scale is going back
Found out my boyfriend has one in storage at his parent's place, which I"ll probably never see the likes of anyway. But, it was more $$ than I needed to spend...an impulse buy, sort of.

Funny thing, I weighed myself this morning, and my weight was 2lbs lower, but my BF% went up. Did I lose some muscle overnight???

BF on the scale? More likely how wet or sweaty your feet were last night.

Calculated mine last night, something in the range of 17-19%. To get to 15, need to lose another 5-7 pounds of fat.

Do I want to know what my body fat %is? 8-] Maybe I'll measure it this weekend

But I ran this morning. This weekend's workouts:
Saturday - 10 mile bike to 6 mile trail run to 10 mile bike home
Sunday - Orienteering ?? miles with loaded race pack, training my horse 1 hour + chores

I couldn't find my cloth tape measure last night, so I couldn't calc using that formula. One of these days I'll cross-train by cleaning out the entire 2nd bedroom. What a disaster....

Dhutch, girl, you amaze me. People who work, have kids, run a household, and still make time to exercise and have so much fun truly, truly amaze me. It was all I could do to work, go to class (out by 6PM), get home, eat, clean up a bit, and exercise just a little. Crazy.

That's the hydration thing SG. Weird eh?

I swam yesterday too. I couldn't find my goggles (of course), so I only did breaststroke and kickboard work. I did a 800 breast and 400 on the board. Felt great to be in the water again.

Pathman, thanks for the over thirty formula. I think I'll give it a shot and see how off that scale is.

Thanks guys :P
All this talk about BF made me curious so I dug out the calipers and YIKES 18-20%
I knew I was slacking but geeezz, and in the summertime even :(
(Between bike riding and softball I usually stay active enough to keep it down around 12-13%)
Guess I better get my butt ta runnin, huh? lol

dhutch - I'm with SG - Do you ever sleep??? lol I don't even have to take care of kids anymore and if I actually get a workout in every day I consider it a major accomplishment :)

I don't sleep enough...yawn!

Funny, sometimes I feel so lazy. Course my house is usually borderline disaster and my lawn needs mowing. But my legs are like steel and I can race multi-sport for 24 hours! It's a matter of priorities. Mine are just screwed up pretty good. lol

Next weekend that my daughter stays home, I think we'll go car camping and just relax!

BTW Sass - I can't imagine that your body fat is over 22%. You look great lately. Congrats, you've worked hard this year.

I know whatcha mean about camping to relax I was seiously thinkin about just packin up and going to Yankee Springs this weekend till the "boss" reminded me we have a wedding to go to tomorrow....oh yippee....lol.
Course she did tell me if I'm a good boy and go to the wedding we can go to Galyans on Sun. so I guess not all is lost....lol

7/23/04

Not long after I started trying to lose some weight after reaching my heaviest ever, I was at the gym when they offered a free body fat testing. I came in at 25% of my then-170 pounds, so was carrying 42.5 pounds of fat - ouch! Now I weigh 153. Presumably all of the weight I lost was fat, plus, that's when I really started cranking on the weight training, so have undoubtedly traded fat for muscle. Without the fat/muscle trade, my BF calcs to about 17%, but I'm guessing it's closer to 10-12%, don't ya think?
BowlderMan

The easiest way would be to calculate your lean body mass. Then you can always calculate your weight against it for a quick body fat indicator. Caveat, if you lose muscle, your lean body mass would decrease.

Either way Bowlderman, you done good!

Who knew??
I guess if I had thought about it this is obvious . . .but a lap (of a swimming pool, not of a woman, or a cat drinking milk) is UP AND BACK>

A LENGTH is just up (or back).

Sooooooo to revise my previous claim . . .I did not do 16 laps yesterday . . .I did 16 lengths or 8 laps.

Today I did 10 laps (and got a half hour upper back/neck massage!). I also rode 20.5 miles this morning (avg speed 16 mph, 1:18)

So I have long way to go in the swimming department . ..but at least I'm in the pool.

Now.

The pool is 25 meters long.

A mile is 1,612.9 meters (1000 meters = .62 miles)

Therefore:

1,612 divided by 25 = 64.5

So a mile in the pool is 64.5 LENGTHS or

32.25 LAPS.

I did . . .. lets see where was I . .. . I did 10 laps . .or just under 1/3 of a mile.

hmm.

Okay.

The goal is 16 LAPSs Which, by my reckoning is 1/2 mile.

I think I can do that now .. . but i need to not do other things too (e.g. the pre-swim run or morning bike ride).

Thank you for your attention. This live streaming insight into the machinations of my brain is now concluded.

Pathman --

Youhit the nail on the head. I don't llike cholorinated water at all.

I am not a big fan of swimming laps at all.

Right now my motivation is two-fold:

1) can I do it. And improve.

2) to provide a non-wearing lunchtime alternative on the days when I ride in the morning and don't think I should run.

A long and distant third is that if I ever get the opportunity to try a mini-triathalon then at least I'll have some swim time under my belt.

swimming is something I really need to work on. One of the ladies I am dating just did her first mini-triathlon. It was a 400 yr swim, 16 mile bike ride (road) and a 3 mile run.
The biking and running would be ok but swimming, that would be a joke.

My outing yesterday was surreal. I left the house, hoping to time between storms. I made the entire 6 miles, 1000 ft climb to the tram with out stopping this time. It was 99 on my cyclometer, but as I approached the tram a huge storm erupted right over the tram, all the way to the top of the mountain. I got wet, but just escaped getting drenched.

They shut the tram down till the lightening passed, about half an hour, but that just gave me a chance to change shoes, get rain gear out and get some hot coffee. The only people there were tourists and they were dressed in short sleeve shirts and tank tops. The top was 45F and 20mph winds. I'd have the trails entirely to myself.

The top of the mountain was entirely enshrouded in clouds, but no thunderstorms at the moment. It was soaking we and muddy, not a soul out. It was about 4pm when I hit the trail. After two hours I wasn't done, so I extended my loop another hour and got back to the tram at 7pm, foggy and wet, dripping forest the entire time with rare glimpses of blue through the coulds. I still need to figure out how far I went, 9-12 miles based on my pace.

Just in time for a bowl of green chile stew, tortilla, and a glass of wine.

It was really hot in the bar, so I headed out on the deck, 45F, visibility 50ft and had another glass of wine. While I sat, I checked out the weather band and heard that a huge storm was forming to the NW, and heading our direction. I still had a six mile ride downhill so headed down. As we broke through the clouds, I could see the storm in the distance.

Back down in ABQ, the temp had fallen to low 70's, light fading fast and the lightening of a big line of t-storms in the distance, rapidly approaching. I whizzed down the 6 miles, 1000ft and just beat them.

I guess the wet and mud slowed me down more than I thought, and I did go slow enought to enjoy the walk. It was more like 6 miles hiked. +/- 1050ft vertical on the loop.

Hopefully I can do some rollerblading tonight to attack the muscles on my backside. Last night we had a pretty good run, I kept a good pace for 20+ minutes, better than I've ever done. Lifted some weights after.

I did an adventure race training event last summer, where we started at midnight an rode until about 6am. It was mountain biking, some of it was on roads, there were some killer hills (I think there were three hour-plus ascents in there, no lie.) Anyway....at about 5am, sun just coming up, we did a major descent on a slightly windy road...I don't know how fast I was going but it got to where I was braking for dear life, barely under control, physically tired, sleep-deprived...thank goodness I wasn't fully awake or I would have given myself heart failure.

Goooooooood times!!!!!!

Fritz -- Now THAT's what I'm talkin about!

Sleep deprivation is something you just can't train for. I'm a "Be prepared" kind of person but I find that when every race is different (distances, duration) I just can't train for everything. I mean how do you prepare for 70 miles of hill on a bike nestled in between 20 miles of treking and 15 miles of canoeing when you only have 30 hours to do it in and you work 50+ hours a week? I guess a better question is how do you really train your mind and body to endure what you cannot train for?

Coming in to lots of money enabling me endless training hours does not seem to be in the cards :-)
