Great - another pet owner who will grow tired of it and dump it rather than live up to the commitment - a very long commitment for that type of bird.

But, we're talking scorchfire here, so it's hardly surprising.

Mutt always likes to give folks the benefit of the doubt. You see, he's perfect (in his mind) and so he feels it's his right to be extra critical of others, even those he doesn't know. It's all the fun he gets, really. It's hard to make friends when one is so righteous. ;)

Nope. It's an instructional audio cassette.

It starts with the english phrase, like, "you smell like $hit!" and then teaches you the phrase in Spanish. Very useful!

Imagine the voice mail messages Scorchy's bird could come up with!

Scorchfire, I have heard that macaws have the pressure of 300lbs per square inch in their beaks. That's some nice looking bird you bought. Good luck with her. Birds are social, so try to keep her out of her cage as much as possible. They like to be put in an active spot to see what going on.

I have an African Grey that I bought when he was 2 months old. He says so many words and phrases, I can't remember them all. He's 10 years old now.

I love him, but I'm sorry I got him since he will out live me and is attached to me. I have no relatives that are younger that will take him when I die, so I am thinking about leaving a large sum of money to some zoo or organization that will take him in upon my demise.

My bird, Merlin has his own room with a cage that remains open all the time and a big swing outside the cage. Hubby made this big perch by putting a 4"+ wide wood branch into a bucket filled with cement, and then we attached branches to the top. I keep this in our livingroom, so that he can be with me all day and evening when I am home.

That is a nice perch you have, but you may consider attaching additional branches to the top. Also, parrots needs a lot of toys and things to chew on to keep them busy, and it keeps them from being bored which leads to featherpicking. That's where they systematically pick their feathers out until they are bald. Once they start doing that, it hard to make them stop. She needs toys on her perch on in her cage.

I don't know if this is your first parrot, but if you have any parrot questions, you can e-mail me at lipstickhiker1@aol.com

ALSO, birds like to be sprayed with water a few times during the week. You can buy one of those spray bottles in a Riteaid or pharmacy store. It helps promote them preening themselves too.

Make sure to keep her claws trimmed too. If you don't want to do it, some pet stores will do it for a nominal fee. If you plan to bring her outside, make sure her feathers are definitely trimmed so that she can only go downhill. So many bird owner's lose their birds, because they take them outside when enough feathers have grown back for the bird to fly and they don't realize it.

Lipstick Hiker, I'm in line to inherit an African Grey that was originally my brothers' but is now my Aunt's (his then fiancee was anti bird.) HPM's not happy about it. He's not a bird person. But that's 20 odd years down the road I think.
0There are bird rescue and placement organizations you can contact to find someone both you and the bird would like as a new owner.

Thanks for everyone's comments: the good and the bad.

Gwen is actually a bird I raised when she was little and she is now 4 years old. I used to train, breed, and raise parrots from the egg and then place them in homes, so I'm familiar with parrot behavior, what they need etc.

So, with that said, Mutt darling , maybe you should take back your words now, since I used to run the Delaware Valley Bird Club and probably know more than everyone on this list combined about parrots.

Lipstick Hiker, that's awesome that you have a Grey! I rescued a grey years ago and he is now in the best home possible compared to where he used to live. I'm in the process of getting Gwen new perches and definitely tons of toys. I just dropped 100 bucks at the store today and have a bunch of things ordered through a catalog I use. I'm also purchasing her a new Kings Cage in December (when I have Xmas cash) because the cage she is in, although still in decent shape, is old.

treebait, thanks for the info. That's funny to think that you will have a parrot in 20 years and you know it now.

Scorch, even though I got my parrot, Merlin, as a baby, he is not particularly friendly to anyone but me. He isn't too affectionate either; he's moody. If he doesn't want me to pet him, he will gently put his beak on my finger and move it away. I think it has something to do with the breed, but I have seen friendlier greys.

One nice thing about when his feathers start to grow in, he can fly over to me to be with me, and it's a nice feeling that he shows he wants to hang out on the couch with me, otherwise, when his wings are clipped, I carry him over. He poops about every 20 min, so I bring him back to the perch, he poops immediately, because he knows the drill, he's smart, then I pick him up again and bring him back with me. He will also poop on command when I say poop.

When he was a baby, and even now, I give him a lot of attention, but he just never became affectionate. He really dislikes my husband.

Funny story: Merlin learned to say "hey you". My husband used to call him "fat boy". One day Merlin is hanging off the side of the cage, and my husband passes by him, and Merlin reaches out to grab him and just misses, then Merlin said to hubby, "hey you fat boy"! I never laughed so hard! Merlin must have been pissed off that he missed grabbing my husband. He always liked to grab his shirt when we had the cage where you had to walk close to it to get by him.

I told my husband to spend more time with the bird, so it's kind of his fault that the bird isn't friendlier towards him.

Yes, greys are extremely temperamental.. although a lot of species of parrots are!

Funny that your bird poops on command. My white eyed conure, Flapper, and both of my lovebirds do the same thing when I hold them over the trashcan and say "poop." Mapleleaf thought it was hysterical when she was at my house.. a few others as well who witnessed it were cracking up. I will be potty training Gwen once she settles into the new house.

One thing that Gwen likes to do that cracks me to pieces: if you turn your back to her or aren't paying attention to her, she gives u a little nip to get your focus back on her. When you turn around to reprimand her for biting, she yells "OUCH!! No biting!"

Pure evil!
