Scorch, you just reminded me of another story of when Merlin was a baby. He seemed to want to beak test everthing, to see what things felt like in his mouth. So if he bite down on me too hard, I would say "ow" as in (h)ow sound.

Well, he started saying "ow" then changed it into "oooooooow", so it sounded like someone was really being hurt. I don't know what was funnier, Merlin saying "oooooow" or my husband being so concerned that someone in our bldg would really think that someone was being hurt, lol.

Btw, he also learned to poop before he flew over to the couch. I taught him by accident. He would poop, then I would go get him, then put him back to poop, so he learned to poop before he would fly over to me.

boooooring. i guess when u've dealt with parrots your whole life, any kind of small bird like a finch or a canary is boring.

LOL, I was thinking of Finch or Canary...but was trying to figure out why finches are $15 and Canaries $100? These small birds are easy to care for and you can leave them alone for a long time.

canaries are more rare and are songbirds. where as finches just live to build nests lol.

I thought canaries might be songbirds...that would be much nicer than "chirp chirp" all the time.

I put $5 on the bird. Now, if Dub had a jack russel or a scotty or even a dachsund.....maybe I'd go for the dog. But the yorkie will probably trip over it's hair or something and be bird treat.

When my parrot, Merlin, flies down to the floor, my chihuahua will do a little doggie dance around Merlin to play with him. When Merlin gets tired of this little dance, she chases after my dog, Capri, and Capri jumps back enough to keep out of beaks reach.

Once Capri got distracted and looked away when Merlin was after her, and I called Capri away just in the nick of time. Merlin could easily break her leg.

scorch, my friend has this nice friendly cockatiel, and decides to get another nice bird. She liked the sunny conures, but I don't think she wanted to spend the bucks, maybe $300 or so. Instead, she gets this what I think is considered a parrot. It's small, a little bigger than a parakeet and green with black cheeks (black cheeked parrot?).

If she had only read about the bird before she bought it, she would have found out that it likes to bite. It's just the birds nature. She is an animal lover and will not sell it or return it, but is nevertheless stuck with caring for this biting bird for it's lifetime without getting any pleasure from it.

That's a shame,.. is it a black masked lovebird? Or maybe a parrolette?

Scorch, it doesn't sound like any of them. I can't ask her now what the name is, because she is on vaction and I am bird sitting him.

Her cockatiel that she has had for many years (male), decided to get an egg stuck in him months ago. So, her male bird Javier, is really female, had an impacted egg, and cost her about $400 to have it removed, because it was toxic to keep it in her.

I have had Javier and the biting bird, Mateo, one day, and Javier has laid an egg already.

I have this cute pic of my bird on the saved on the internet somewhere. If I ever find it, I will send it to you.

It's a pic of Merlin sitting on my couch, and the curtains behind the couch are closed, and he has the curtain in his claw and he's has the curtain pulled open so he can look out the window.

If I had this one thing he did on video, I could have made thousands on one of those vidoe pet shows. Merlin was sitting on the couch with the curtains closed. I opened the curtains, and he looked outside and said "beautiful".

I'd love to see a picture of Merlin! I have a ton of bird pictures, but I'll save everyone the boredom of looking at them.

Sounds like your friend's bird was eggbound, which can be VERY fatal. She should give him (haha) lots of calcium to prevent it... she can find calcium in certain types of pellets, or it comes in powder form. A cheap calcium supplement is crushed up egg shells... she can bake "birdie bread" (I have a ton of recipes) with the crushed up eggshells inside of the bread.

ScorchFire, Thanks, I will tell my friend about increasing the bird's calcium intake. It sure beats getting another $400 vet bill.

My house is a zoo now. Merlin is okay with the visiting bird. I gave him treats and played with him today, but my Chihuahua, Capri is totally pissed off by Javier, the cockatiel sitting on my shoulder. Javier is used to coming out of his cage every day so I can't just leave him in there.

ScorchFire, I will look for some Merlin pics to send to you.

LH, also tell your friend to change Javier's environment. Maybe switch his toys/perches around in his cage or change locations of where his cage is. That usually throws off egg laying if you change the cage around every 2-3 months. Egg laying usually occurs around each change of season for tiels.
