Well, who is right? Both Tilt and TD say it's the one way and you're saying it's the other, NS. HEY!! Do I need to make all you guys sit in the corner and go make a phone call??!?

Well, let's see. I rode the shuttle. Towndawg hiked up, and I believe that Tilt hiked up, too. Towndawg is loyal to TN and thinks that it is the world. Tilt lives in darkness, worshiping the stars.

On the other side, I do make mistakes sometimes, like trying to visit simer190 instead of you. But I get out more. Also, I have tremendous recall. If only I could control what gets recalled.

LOL.

Grrrr.. well -- who knows.. maybe I'm wrong.. but once I looked at the map -- I see where the confusion lies.

Cumberland Gap Tennessee. Shuttle route would drive out Hwy 58E.. Within a few minutes of departure, you appear to be in Virginia actually. The area borders TN/KY and VA..

The state park appears to be in KY.. Martins Fork appears to be in KY.. but in order to get there.. the road along Hwy 58E appears to be in VA.

Tilt was comparing the 'road up from the TN side. So he's comparing Chadwell Gap TH to Shihalah Creek TH.

Yes -- the distinction is that Chadwell Gap does come up from the Tennessee side.. (Cumberland Gap, TN) but.. it appears to be really in VA. (The closest town appears to be Caylor, VA).

The Shililah Creek road comes from the Kentucky side, (Hwy 217, east of Hutch KY)

Make more sense now?

The state park appears to be in KY..

I need to clarify that also. The public park (picnic ground, campground) appears to be in KY -- but it clearly straddles KY/VA... with the SW edge of it in TN?

Maybe now I got it?

Everyone needs to make that shuttle run at least once.

Nothing like looking out the window of a 15 passenger van and seeing 150 drop off about 6 inches from the tires.

TownDawg
NO! Not according to the Park Service Map, for which you provided a link.

The KY-VA border runs along near the center of the Park. Just north of the tunnel, and running SW, it is the KY-TN border, after the tri-state intersection. Most of the park is in KY and VA. Only a section from the town going SW is in TN.

The TN-VA line runs east from the tri-state junction. It passes on the north edge of the town, Cumberland Gap, and just south of the Iron Furnace.

About 0.1 mile out of the town, 58 crosses from TN into VA, and stays there as it goes east and slightly north. 58 runs south of the picnic ground and campground, which are clearly in VA.

The shuttle on which I rode traveled on 988 and then 217. I'm not sure if it entered the Park before or after route 987.

chili sent me some photos of the jeep recon trip last year. It was amazing to see a jeep on those types of angles, side to side. When I saw them I knew that if I got to go to TC3, that I'd walk. If it was possible for me to go this year, I'd walk.

Chili36 is right. It really was interesting on the downhill run, when the driver locked the brakes and said, "Oops," as the vehicle slid into a hairpin turn.

TownDawg - After rereading your post, yes, you do have it! Including the reference to the "(picnic ground, campground)" confused my simple mind and misled me.

The shuttle driver didn't waste any time making the trip.

Yeah, I was gonna say.... it could've been Viginia, LOL

The Wilderness Road campground just to the east is in VA, if I recall.

There's this big honking east-west ridge, ya see... and they thought they might as well draw the boundry line rat there. Where to draw the VA state line was a little more free form, I think.

A search on "Kantuckee" produces

HEY YOUSE GUYS! I've got the solution. It's either from the NORTH side of the park or from the SOUTH side of the park.

And OK, I think you've got me wondering about the 4WD. Hey somebody, compare it to the Rampart Range Road as you leave Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs!!! I drove that! (probaby a "2" on the 4WD scale. LOL!)

Course, I would NEVER EVER drive Elephant Hill in Canyonlands!!!

Ok I was on the shuttle also and It started at the Cumberland Gap Nat'l Park just outside on Middlesboro Ky. and headed northeast past the overlook parking area and then up some winding road, but all in KY. We were dropped off just west of Hensley, still in KY. Hensley is just on the KY side of the KY/VA state line. As you hike north on the state line you literally have one foot in KY and the other in VA.

One curious question, how is everyone going to camp at Martin's Fork? Is there enough space for a tent city? We fit fine last year, but if the number doubles, things could get tight.

Yeah - it seemed like a big space last year. I think it would be fine. Might not have as much personal space in the meadow, but there were plenty of places in the woods still...

I don't think the park service would issue a permit there for 100 people if the area couldn't support it.

Go back and look at the pics, there was plenty of open space left over. I personally will use 2 trees to swing from. I probably will have to come in late on Friday or very early on Saturday. Only one Vacation day left. And I will galdly use it for this trip.

Oh brother! Sounds more like divinity wants a ride! So I help her out and in return I have to listen to her yapping all the way, probably reading to me from "1.000 Jokes For Every Occassion," or a knock, knock book. Now, if she had offered to keep me awake by rubbing the back of my neck or my back, this could be more intriguing.

BTW, divinity, I'm planning to leave this Tuesday. There's a few trails between here and Martin's Gap. Don't want to miss any. Are you game?
