Roam
I think smokygirl mentioned that we will have a place to camp in town on Fri night. We camped at Barb's store last year, but she doesn't have it any more. The Wilderness Road Campground is fairly close by if anyone wanted to stay there on Fri night or any other night if they weren't going to the cookoff.

Tearoom in Cgap
Valerie said that they said we could camp out in their lawn. Can't camp in the town park though because that is where the vendors will be for Saturday. I asked about that. If not enough room at Tearoom area, spill over into Wildnerness Campground two miles down the road. I will see if other businesses will let us camp and let y'all know soon...

Thank you Roam and Scorch! I have enjoyed doing it - not saying it wasn't stressfull at times, but I can't wait until OCTOBER!!!!!!!!!!! :D

...very fortunate to have creative folks like Humanpackmule to do kick-butt web sites and Opie to rake up sponsors, and of course, Towndawg to create it in the first place!

I think there will be lots of rooom in Cumberland Gap on Friday night. But remember if you want to have dinner Friday night please send in a entry form even if you are going to be in the cook-off. We need a head count for dinner and it is prepay.
Music and food Friday night so don't be late.

Hey and everyone can purchase t-shirts that don't enter the cookoff I think we will be selling the t-shirts that look GREAT.
See everyone very soon

Barb,
I'm still debating about hiking in the long way and spending Friday night at Gibson Gap. Is there a reliable water source at Gibson?

Barb, if someone wanted to fully explore the park.. (from one end to the other, and including all points of at least 'general' interest) how many days should they plan for a backpacking trip?

This sounds like fun
my hubby (Thinkbubelz) and I are seriously thinking about going! I have to see if there's any way I can take that Friday off so that we can Drive from Michigan... who else is coming from our neck of the woods? (I see that Tarabull is a maybe as well?)

If you want to see the park backpack the Ridge Trail 2 nights out. You can spend a extra night and explore Hensley Settlement area more. There are several things on that end of the park.

Gibson Gap yes there is water there. 2 choices. One maybe dry but not to worry the other is down the mountain a little but has water.
But with all the rain we have had I don't think it will be a problem unless we get no rain until then.

So Barb, you're saying if you did the whole ridge (like from Pinnical Overlook, which I have been to... or even down by the visitor center) to get to Martin's Fork, it would be take two nights? You would be in Martin's Fork the second night?

Plus you'd advise another day, just to thoroughly explore Hensley Settlement?

And regarding the competition at Martin's Fork--

1. When do the people who are competing leave to start the hike up? Do they leave Saturday a.m. and if so, what time? Or to ensure arrival on time do they leave earlier?

2. Ok, Jerbear wants to do the morning breakfast competition. When is that completed? Do the people doing this competition have enough time to hike "up the hill" for the competition on top?

Call me dazed and confused... lol! %-)

We are thinking of doing the cook offs as well. Do you know if the entry fee covers both or just 1 of the 2 cookoffs? Are you limited to only 1 "entree" for each? (hubby & I both want to cook!)

like Liz asked, is it even possible to do both cookoffs?

Another question.... how cold does it get in the Mountains in October?? We just got through hiking in Denali where at night it (at times) got to 32/33 degrees.... which was okay, but we had summer weight bags and were rather cold at times (but now we know how to warm up!)

It's easier on us to have you all send in an entry form. We MUST have somewhat of a head count on people who are competing - if you can't print the entry form, then write on a piece a paper what info the entry form requires. I trust you! Yo Bear! Whiny Bear?

Ok I think that you could compete in both breakfast and dinner. If you hike really fast just kidding.
You should be able to hike in 4 to 5 hours tops and that is taking a nice walk. But again depends on your hike.

If you enter both you do have to pay for both. Each person does pay the fee. Sorry but hey you get a t-shirt with each entry.

You can register on Friday night but the dinner must be prepaid for a head count. And we may run out of t-shirts if we don't have a good idea of the total people.

Hope that answers all questions anymore let me know.

I'm kinda curious, too --

What I've read says competitors in the breakfast cook-off *should* have time to make the shuttle... What should this mean to the Casual Observer? <VBG>

I'll also need to do a quick repacking then park the Exploder at the Pinnacle on the way to the shuttle launch point (wheresomever that might be)... If I've got the time! <G>

Hey -- did somebody say they wanted to walk in and ride out? Maybe the shuttle folks will let us split the fare? %^ )

After we have a count on how many need a shuttle up or down as the case maybe, we will work with the park for the time.
But we do have to have the entry form complete and to us before the event to work out the time.
So PLEASE send in your entry form.
If you wait until Friday night we maynot be able to work out your ride.
Thanks
