Haven't talked to Opie in ages, but last I heard, had secured some excellent booty stash.” 7:54:26 AM 9/28/04 “the prizes are great towndawg!” 8:26:22 AM 9/28/04 “I'm out, son is coming home on leave for 25 days this Friday. Curses, foiled again. :-D But for the bestest of causes. I'll have to try again next year.” 12:17:54 PM 9/28/04 jerbear “Civic park trailhead is the 7.5 route. Trail Information and Maps: Ewing Trail (7.2 miles to Martin's Fork): Most who attend Titanium Chef choose this route. Blaze: NPS markers Distance: 8.4 miles, total round trip Ewing Trail: 3.8 miles, one way Ridge Trail (Ewing Trail-White Rocks): 1 mile, one way Sand Cave Trail: 0.5 mile, round trip White Rocks Trail (+ return): 3.1 miles, one way Overall difficulty: moderate Grade: A very long climb with an elevation gain of about 2000 feet, most of it on the Ewing Trail. Switchbacks keep the climb from being impossibly steep. The White Rocks Trail is somewhat steeper. The last 200 feet before the top of White Rocks is beyond steep. Footing: Easy dirt paths, except for rock on White Rocks and sand in Sand Cave. Not much rocky footing except for the final ascent to White Rocks and a few dry stream beds on the Ewing Trail. Some parts of the Ewing Trail can get muddy. Stream crossings: none, but some of the dry stream beds are not so dry in wetter weather. USGS Quad: Ewing Directions: The "Civic Park" in "Civic Park Trailhead" is the Ewing (Virginia) Civic Park. Simply take VA 724 north from Ewing until it dead ends at the park. If you are on U.S. 58, VA 724 turns off just east of the Citgo station. The best place to leave a car is just outside the gates of the park at a little gravel lot. From there, the trailhead is a short walk through Civic Park on the gravel road; the trail starts just behind the picnic shelter. Pinnacle Trail: 12.6 Miles to Martin's Fork Ridge Trail: The Ridge Trail runs the length of the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, and as it's name implies, runs along the ridge of the Cumberland mountain. In places, this ridge is as narrow as 10 feet and drops steeply to both sides. The views from atop the Cumberland Mountain can be breathtaking at times, especially at Pinnacle overlook (the trailhead) and White Rocks (the trail's end). The entire hike is at about 3000' above sea level, so if there is any cloud cover, you won't see much more than fog. NOTE: The Chadwell Gap Trail is CLOSED.” 12:28:27 PM 9/28/04 “thanks td!c ya!” 7:29:23 PM 9/28/04 “ok well youve talked me out of going then...later folks” 6:15:12 AM 9/29/04 Shep0987 “Talked you out of it? Whatever. Don't see what anyone said to talk you out of it. Have a good one though!” 6:34:24 AM 9/29/04 “TownDawg... it's too bad that Thinkbubelz and I can't make it... and it sounded like so much fun! But I can't take Friday or MOnday off, so we'd spend way too much time in the car and not on the trail.... Hopefully, we can join everyone next year-- we're going to the Manistee trail instead that weekend!” 10:59:25 AM 9/29/04 LOL “TownDawg outs himself again! ;-)” 12:46:44 PM 9/29/04 “SS: huh?” 12:58:59 PM 9/29/04 “shep0987 - You wouldn't like it anyway. All the TT 'old' people over 25 are going. ;-) TD - Are trying to say you aren't SD? ;-)” 1:03:05 PM 9/29/04 “"shep0987 - You wouldn't like it anyway. All the TT 'old' people over 25 are going. " LOL @ SS” 1:18:33 PM 9/29/04 “Dhutch, bring him!” 1:20:47 PM 9/29/04 “pinkbubelz: Yeah.. I feel you on that.. wife was trying to talk me into skipping it.. since I can't leave till late Friday.. and afraid for me driving all night.. plus.. I just found out yesterday that my parent's 50th anniversary is on Sunday.. so now it's really complicated.. I can't see missing Tc4 though.. Too much fun.. Maybe it will all hang together somehow. Never seen an event or meeting yet that EVERYONE can come to though.. we can't even get everyone to make all the meetings at work sometimes.. You will be missed.. but maybe next year.” 1:27:18 PM 9/29/04 “Ok....I get off work Thursday at 1pm.......and considering leaving Thursday after that sometime....any one around here wanna ride with me???? (N Alabama)” 5:33:47 PM 9/29/04 “ok everyone I need some more entry forms in... we only have 1 for the breakfast cookoff. Anymore takers? The prizes are great.....and you could do both if you love to hike fast..or just do the breakfast and get a ride up for all the fun...... Later. Barbara” 11:56:56 PM 9/30/04 Barbara “There are two more entries coming from Kabinkamper & I, as well as a place at the table for both of us on Friday. See you then, Brian & Angie” 1:27:29 AM 10/01/04 Weather for TC4????? “What's it been like in the past? I looked at www.weather.com for Harrogate, TN and for Ewing, VA... very close on figures. Here's what it said: Average high of 69 and low of 43. Record high of 94 and low of 16. I also read on the Cumberland Gap National Parks page to subtract 10 degrees for being on top of the mountain... so we're looking at averages of 59 and 33?? Just trying to figure out what sleeping bag to take. Also, I see an average precip amount of 3.13 inches... so apparently, knock on wood, not much chance for rain (or... shudder... snow!)” 10:10:31 AM 10/01/04 “This time of year anything goes. But last year the weather was wonderful. Not very cool just right. I would check the weather forcast right before you come. Hopefully there will be no rain... those 4 letter words... Right now the weather is in the 50 at night but in East Tennessee that can change in a few hours. Plan for anything guess that doesn't help you any....LOL Later Barbara” 11:04:08 AM 10/01/04 “Barb, One entry for TC4 (mine) on the way. And one for the breakfast cookoff (cottonsocks) on the way. We need an xl and a medium shirt.” 11:27:41 AM 10/01/04 “HMMMmmmm... more more competition for the breakfast cookoff, Eh? You folks are going DOWN, LOL” 11:49:44 AM 10/01/04 “All right sounds like Tilt has put the challenge out there any takers? The prize list is great......” 12:52:12 PM 10/01/04 “I'm going to kick butt and take names -- One word, people..... GRITS! 1:07:08 PM 10/01/04 “So where are we meeting Friday and where are we camping Friday night?” 10:54:05 PM 10/01/04 “Hello to all- It has been awhile since I have been on trail talk and have now moved to East TN.
