I just read the 31-page executive summary. It's a remarkable document, finding fault without placing blame. It should provide the basis for a good debate over future direction.

One of the recommendations, treebeard will be interested to learn, is to concentrate funding on high priority target areas like NYC and DC and to stop the "pork barrel" funding.

Oh sure, and leave places like Ekalaka, Montana wide open to attack!

I was listening to the committee members' news conference on C-SPAN earlier this afternoon and was once again impressed by the civility they exhibit. Unfortunately, I'm afaid this thread is ultimately destined for Fuegoville, <G>.

I used the chatter designation because the commission walked a very fine line in not placing blame and assessing the mistakes of both parties.

Seemed to me like a very deliberated discourse about events and where things went wrong. Nobody intentionally screws things up; but we need to know where mistakes were made.

Of course, somebody will read something that's not there and start flaming away. It's inevitable.

I too listened to part of the news conference, but that's because it was background noise for me while I took a nap in my car at lunch.

Geo - I posted a little funny thread title about Al Gore as a header for an article about the guy that invented the internet getting a Knighthood. Very positive feel good article.
Of course Tilt and violin went foaming at the mouth mad about it being classed chatter.
Look for the 'I bet Al Gore is Pissed thread', LOL.

I can't help but imagine how many people would still be alive if Al had been sworn in instead of Dubya. The fun goes out of it for me at that point.

And I can't imagine how many MORE people might be dead if Al HAD been sworn in. Would the terrorists, emboldened by the lack of a forceful response from us said to themselves "gee, that's easy, let's do it again!". Or, would Saddam, unchecked, have decided it was a good time to gas a few hundred thousand more people? Or, would the Taliban have decided that, since we were such wussies, they should now duplicate their attack upon other "western infidels"?

And we'll never know, will we?

the ONE thing i think we should all keep in mind with regards to this 'commission' and its so called 'report' is, that every single member of said commission was appointed to it, solely
by the white house. keeping that in mind, its wishy-washy findings are no surprise what-so-ever.

The commission was comprised of equal #'s from both sides of the aisle, gramey. Give your whacked out conspiracy theories a rest, they did their job, they did it well, and with all the focus everyone has put on them there is no way they could have slanted it to suit any one party.

So, BB, GW planned the attacks on 9-11, and GW is to blame for all the resulting turmoil? He started all this???

I can understand your disagreeing with his philosophy and approach, but how can you possibly justify such outrageous accusations / statements?

I agree, it wasn't slanted. I read 15 pages of the thing and took a nap as a result (no joke). The report is not partisan at all, like Geobeet observed. However, we both know that both sides will pull quotes from the material to attack each other.

My opine.... there was a legit reason to take out Afghanistan's Taliban (especially after they tore down the Buddha Statues), but absolutely no reason or logic, whatsoever to invade Iraq. None. Period. Bush and his regime not only failed in Iraq, they showed thier true colors, and it's not right.

So how should the commisssion members have been cvhosen? By whom? It was the WH responsibility to name one, they did, they invited Dem's & repubs both, and because you don't like their findings, it's all wrong.

Sorry if the truth bothers you.

the commission memebers should NOT be chosen by the very body(the white house) that they were to in part be investigating. its common sense. and throwing in limbaugh lunacies like '..the truth bothers you.." and/or "im glad i dont live blah blah" dont change things.

i have problems with 'bi-partisan' because there cetainly exist Dems that are more conservative than some Repub's.(and they were appointed to this body. And, i have problems with a 'commission' appointed soley by one of the accused. and, I have problems with
tyhe report that puts so much emphasis
on the intelligence, but oddly, almost none on how that intelligence was 'used'. that portion of the report, oddly enough, isnt due to be released until after the november election. (if ever)hmmmm...........

Our only defense (as a convert), is logic. I konw, these conservatives, don't utilize logic as a part of thier arguements, but we need to. So have at it, lets see some facts.

Gramey, we can't debate because your original premise is incorrect:

"the commission memebers should NOT be chosen by the very body(the white house) that they were to in part be investigating"

(1) They weren't supposed to be investigating the White House, they were supposed to be investigating the facts leading up to the 9/11 attacks.

Fairly surreal, is it not? I'd heard the issues raised before re: the translation dept. on 60 Minutes, etc., but I'd like to hear more about how information wasn't shared between agencies due to "certain lucrative or political relations" and how "frustrated FBI agents cited 'direct pressure by the State Department,' and in other cases 'sensitive diplomatic relations'."

Nuts?
Bush's erratic behavior worries White House aides
by Doug Thompson, Capitol Hill Blue

June 4, 2004

President George W. Bush?s increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express growing concern over their leader?s state of mind.

In interviews with a number of White House staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his decisions to be ?God?s will? and then tells aides to ?#&%!$ over? anyone they consider to be an opponent of the administration.

In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats and others that he classifies as ?enemies of the state.?

Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home.

?It reminds me of the Nixon days,? says a longtime GOP political consultant with contacts in the White House. ?Everybody is an enemy; everybody is out to get him. That?s the mood over there.?

In interviews with a number of White House staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his decisions to be ?God?s will? and then tells aides to ?#&%!$ over? anyone they consider to be an opponent of the administration.

?We?re at war, there?s no doubt about it. What I don?t know anymore is just who the enemy might be,? says one troubled White House aide. ?We seem to spend more time trying to destroy John Kerry than al Qaeda and our enemies list just keeps growing and growing.?

Aides say the President gets ?hung up on minor details,? micromanaging to the extreme while ignoring the bigger picture. He will spend hours personally reviewing and approving every attack ad against his Democratic opponent and then kiss off a meeting on economic issues.

?This is what is killing us on Iraq,? one aide says. ?We lost focus. The President got hung up on the weapons of mass destruction and an unproven link to al Qaeda. We could have found other justifiable reasons for the war but the President insisted the focus stay on those two, tenuous items.?

Aides who raise questions quickly find themselves shut out of access to the President or other top advisors. Among top officials, Bush?s inner circle is shrinking. Secretary of State Colin Powell has fallen out of favor because of his growing doubts about the administration?s war against Iraq.

The President's abrupt dismissal of CIA Directory George Tenet Wednesday night is, aides say, an example of how he works.

"Tenet wanted to quit last year but the President got his back up and wouldn't hear of it," says an aide. "That would have been the opportune time to make a change, not in the middle of an election campaign but when the director challenged the President during the meeting Wednesday, the President cut him off by saying 'that's it George. I cannot abide disloyalty. I want your resignation and I want it now."

Tenet was allowed to resign "voluntarily" and Bush informed his shocked staff of the decision Thursday morning. One aide says the President actually described the decision as "God's will."

God may also be the reason Attorney General John Ashcroft, the administration?s lightning rod because of his questionable actions that critics argue threatens freedoms granted by the Constitution, remains part of the power elite. West Wing staffers call Bush and Ashcroft ?the Blues Brothers? because ?they?re on a mission from God.?

?The Attorney General is tight with the President because of religion,? says one aide. ?They both believe any action is justifiable in the name of God.?

But the President who says he rules at the behest of God can also tongue-lash those he perceives as disloyal, calling them ?#&%!$ing #&%!$s? in front of other staff, berating one cabinet official in front of others and labeling anyone who disagrees with him ?unpatriotic? or ?anti-American.?

?The mood here is that we?re under siege, there?s no doubt about it,? says one troubled aide who admits he is looking for work elsewhere. ?In this administration, you don?t have to wear a turban or speak Farsi to be an enemy of the United States. All you have to do is disagree with the President.?
The White House did not respond
to requests for comment on the record.
